The Reds were in first place everyday for the first four months of the season. In August their lack of starting pitching depth caught up with them. The Giants were able to add starters Rick Reuschel and Dave Dravecky at the trade deadline. As a result the Giants won the division and the Reds finished second for the third year in a row. No wildcard until 1994.
