About Us
We are Becka and Zach, a couple who, in 2020, dreamt of sailing off into the big blue. Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn’t have a boat. The dream seemed not only unrealistic but pretty insane.
However, we worked hard, finished our degrees, worked as many hours as physically possible, saved with all our might, got experience and in March 2022 bought our very own sailboat, Teulu. Having little sailing experience and being a young couple, we have encountered a tonne of hurdles and made plenty of mistakes! but for every downfall, there has always been a reason to dust ourselves off and carry on.
We hope you can join us as we sail around the world and keep #bloodydoingit

Given that cats move in a completely different way to a mono when anchored, the owner of the cat was clearly a inexperienced nutter to anchor so close to you in the first place. As 99.9% sailors are friendly and thoughtful, its always such a shock to meet someone so rude. I guess you have to be grateful there was no damage to you and keep on sailing 😀

Thanks for watching. We think it goes without saying, that by posting this and sharing our experience, isn't to cast negativity or hate towards the French or Catamaran owners. There are bad people, everywhere. Number of hulls, or colour of flag has nothing to do with it, so we would appreciate if the comments can also reflect that! Thanks Becka and Zach

I keep telling you guys to get a couple of mounts you could just clip the camera to..... And yeah, it is a scary thought, but there are only 3 eventual fates for all boats and ships; the Scrapyard, or they sink, or a very few get preserved as memorials. Sorry, but there it is. On the plus side, you will be at 50k subs very soon! :D

What you said at the start of the video really resonated with me. We’ve lived in our flat for years, we love it and it’s our home. We’ve recently had awful neighbours move in, and after us very politely complaining about something we had put up with a while, they decided to retaliate by doing something absolutely awful to us. The anger I feel is similar to yours, that someone would knowingly completely ruin our sense of home and security, how dare they? We’re currently holding out as have heard they may be moving soon, and we will go on to live our happy life in our happy home and work towards our goals and dreams. This video was extremely significant in my ‘recovery’ from the anger. Thank you!

The boat that hit you was probably an AirBnB or charter, being a very popular choice as a floating condo, personally moving before something happens, because cats swing differently than monohulls. It is a lesson you will never forget. Thanks for the informative video.

Hey Guys, I am a pleasure fisherman and love fishing the Solent and surrounding areas. When we are at anchor fishing its amazing to see how many other water users come so close, weather under sail or power forgetting that we have a lot or rope out to keep the anchor set in the strong currents and not to mention the rare but avoidable collision. I so feel for you, and really admire your restraint, I think I would have fed him a boat hook or something for his pure attitude and arrogance. As always a great video and with such feeling 10/10. Love always xx

In Germany once, waiting for a ferry in car. Engine off. The car behind us in a uphill position rolled down and bashed into us from behind. The couple in the car screamed at us in German and blamed us for driving into them. They really thought we were to blame - and could defy gravity driving into them uphill without the engine being on. That took the biscuit. Deep breaths. Luckily, you avoided damage. Bastards exist.

We spend 5 months of the year sailing in the Caribbean and anchor the whole time, we are currently in Martinique. The most stressful part of the winter is not wind, waves or repairs but incompetent or inconsiderate sailors anchoring too close when there is lots of room available. It is a strange phenomenon that even if you are the only boat in the area, someone will anchor right beside you. I recently had to move the boat after someone dropped their anchor right beside us, and then of course our boat was over their anchor when they wanted to leave. It’s usually weekenders or charters who lack experience, but most people are reasonable. Cheers.

Yes despite what people say, sailing is not for faint hearted the ignorant or unskilled. Going around the world in a yacht is hard work because boats need maintenance and sailing is hard work too. You have to know about winds, weather and circumnavigation. You visit some unforgettable places and see some amazing things but it isn’t all fun and games. I was privileged to see inside the yacht of the first Australian woman to circumnavigate around the world solo and was intrigued by how prepared she had to be to meet every possible disaster. She even carried a spare emergency mast in case hers broke and it did. Hats off to her and all brave sailors that dare to try.

You will soon realize you will meet people at anchorages who THINK when two boats come close to one another they will always believe their boat is static and hasn't moved an inch since they dropped their anchor and it is always others, whose boats have intruded into their sacred space. They think of themselves as being a mooring buoy and it is always someone else's fault BECAUSE they are anchored.

A few years ago a power boat was anchored in front of us, and started to drag. They were insisting that we were dragging into them - upwind. Now, that would be a trick! Anyway lesson learned, it's a pain but not hard to pull up and anchor again somewhere else. Your situation is a little more tricky if they are on top of your hook :(

I'd name and shame that boat. That's ridiculous. Plenty of people like that out there. You'll also get some boats that come from areas of the world (the med...) where anchorages are always nail-biting tight. Then they show up at a windy Bahamas anchorage and drop 3:1 scope in the middle of 3 boats who are all 5:1. We had a boat (funny enough, a Lagoon 380/410 I think!) that dropped insanely close to us. A day later, I hear a REALLY LOUD windlass pulling up behind us. Turns out it wasn't loud, their bow was right off our aft and nearly bumping into our sugar scoops! I quickly fired up the engine and motored forward. They gave me a "thank you!" before they left. I don't give a CRAP about a thank you. How about a WARNING? Or how about not anchoring so close to me in the first place?!

Not sure we want to name and shame them, I'm sure he'll learn his lesson someday soon. What a coincidence, are you sure it wasn't you 😉 Thats crazy, luck they didn't hit you!

@@TeuluTribe I think I know this boat... Lagoon 410. French couple? Not sure if you faded out the logo on the bow or if there just was no logo on the bow. If it's the one I'm thinking of, it's the same one that dropped 3:1 scope in a busy Georgetown Exuma anchorage multiple times with no regard for spacing. They didn't cause any problems or hit anyone, but they were just very rude when it came to positioning. It is definitely rude to anchor so close to another boat that you basically forced your neighbors into a higher state of alertness. You turn a relaxed anchorage into a night watch, and I'm going to be annoyed!

I was hit by a cat in Antigua in the middle of the night. THe boat had arrived and anchored next to us three days prior, and though close there was no issue until the skipper decided, in an unexplainable lapse of all common sense, to retrieving his anchor at 1AM keeping the windlass going until he hit my topsides ( more of a bump, as it was thankfully calm), leaving a mark on the paint, waking up the five of us aboard. This skipper then suggested if we turned the engine on and moved the boat he could retrieve his anchor. I had no words to that crazy request. Told him he can sleep here and let out 45 more feet of chain. THe next morning I received an apology. This was an owner, he did care about the boat. My guess is you were dealing with a credit card captain ( charter renter). There is a pattern in the Caribbean: Boats with lousy maintenance don't care if they might hit you ( like a rustbucket steel boat that looks like it is ready for the torch) or charter bareboats. Professional captains also anchor too close, but they tend to have the skills to make it work. As you know I am french, born and raised there, but I hate the french charter boats as much as everyone else.

I'm sorry to hear about that experience Ed, at least he apologised in the morning. It's crazy how little experience people can have before they rent a 40ft+ cat, I'm surprised more people don't have experiences like this.

I can only imagine how you felt. Trying to push through too small a gap a man rubbed our parked car with his works van. I was incandescent. His attitude of no damage done was unacceptable. This was 18 months ago. I fully subscribe to the theory that in your mind you take on the physical shape of such things as cars or boats and that such a bump/bang bruises this outer shell. That no damage is visible is irrelevant to how you feel and the invasion of your space.

I probably would have just shot a flare off right over his bow and lowered the gun at him and said, "I won't be firing a second warning shot today." He would have learned a lesson about the expense of new undies at a minimum. You two are much more forgiving than I (and also have better judgment). Well done! 👏👏

Hi guys, just binge watching to get up to date. Down here in Nz, that incident would involve the MSA. The Maritime Safety Authority. They deal with incidents like that. Where you were then, I wouldn't be surprised if they have a similar Authority or are part of the International version of MSA. With the photos you have, plus evidence of the sheer stupidity and lack of concern the other vessel showed, that could well have been their last trip. The vessel could have been confiscated, plus the skipper could have been pinged (fined) big time. Generally speaking, you would be required to complete an incidence report too, stating your side of the incident. Take care folks. Atb from down here.

I agree with some of the commenters here, if it looks wrong, don't get your back up about who was there first, just keep yourself safe. If that means moving, then move straight away, don't wait to see if the others are nice thoughtful people. If they already put you and your yacht at risk there's a hint lol. Also your yacht is a monohull with a fixed keel, the current will have the major impact on your movement whereas the cat is basically a flat bottom hull with high windage area so will be affected more by the wind than current. When you see this, simply get out of the way, stay relaxed and happily enjoying your cheese and drinks! Better luck next time 🥂

We always want to keep ourselves and Teulu safe, he was right on top of our anchor though so we couldn’t move initially until the wind shifted him out of our way. The current affected us more than the wind, but in hindsight, there was also a chance bis chain was over ours, causing the erratic movements. All a very odd experience!
