In this video I discuss accepted reef tank parameters for those looking to keep SPS! Here is where I "try" to keep my levels:
Alkalinity 8.0 dkH
Calcium 410 ppm
Magnesium 1350 ppm
Nitrate 5 ppm
Phosphate 0.03 - 0.07 ppm
Specific gravity 1.025
Temperature 79.4 - 79.8F
When I used to dose 2-part, this is the recipe I used to use with the exception of the magnesium and calcium driveway salts. I was hesitant about using those, so I purchased magnesium chloride and calcium chloride from BRS. But I did use baking soda and Epsom salts. I was never particular about using equal amounts of alk and calcium. I just adjusted each independent of one another.

You are watching an old video.The lighting is bad in this video. This is part of the growing pains of learning to make videos, which is something that I never did before. Obviously, I'm not a natural at this. Also keep in mind that making a reef tank and a person look good in the same shot is a difficult thing to do, so I stopped trying. But let me know if you have a way and I'm all ears. I still aim for these parameters by the way.

Good video..im subscribed! I'm preparing my tank now for acros. It's more of an lps tank now. I'm running a 3 year old 65 gallon reef with older hydras. Hopefully the acros will do well with these old original first gen hydras. I haven't got a par meter but I will definitely get that done before I introduce my first acro to the tank. Right now alk is at 8.6 ph is at 7.9 phos is at .5 calcium is at 463 mag is at 1256 nitrates are at 20..I know they are high. I'm going to run a reactor with bio pellets. Hopefully that works. My goal is acros by May 2021..

Thanks for all the advice. Oh boy. I recently over the past three months got back into to hobby after being out for three years. Man I better take out my Seachem PhosG and better stop carbon dosing. My phos and Nitrates are 0. Might be why test frag "birds nest" isn't doing so well. I've noticed that I'm hearing more and more to actually have both but at a lower level. Informational as always. But just one chemists opinion…you should keep your test fluid bottles as perpendicular as possible. Those nozzles are calibrated to a certain drop size and you can only obtain it if the tip is perpendicular.

Hi Abe, love you videos and information. Just tried an a do frag and had an alc swing (don’t ask how) but the frag I purchased seems to be dying...but not quite dead yet. Do smallish frags bounce back or should I just consider them gone? Also, when you have die off is it recommended to dip or cut the dead part back. Does iodine dip help them at all in terms of recovery?
@CoralEuphoria
@CoralEuphoria 3 жыл бұрын
All those things are sometimes worth trying, but they're not really reliable. All of the different ways to deal with stn or dying corals sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. You can try cutting off the dead part. I usually don't do that though until I see that the parts that are alive look like they're bouncing back. It's not really an exact science. In my experience, just having great tank conditions is as reliable as cutting off dying Parts, using dips, Etc. It's the same thing as everything sometimes they make it, sometimes they don't.

I recently discovered you by researching frag farmers red stag. Well I enjoy your videos and love your coral colors. I an on ordering some frags In The future. In the 90s I started saltwater the fish got me and I bought a few pieces if cor and then crashed the system when my lights crashed. Pre internet days and my lfs closed up and I was lost so I shut down my system. Ffwd to about 5 years ago I decided to start up again and corals got me this time. Acropora! I've had my issues over the past 5 years I got some black bugs I've had alk swings I lost colonies I lost frags iui ve got some frags that have seen it all. I've recently switched to 2 part I was running smoothly for a month then had a up swing to 12 I'd like to see more info on what your dosing schedule looked like. How many times a day what time of day and how you incorporated kalk with it. I tried kalk 1 time and my corals suffered dearly not sure what happened or if a combo of thing happened but I got my colors coming back again and some growth going again but I'm struggling getting a good dosing program set up and running smoothly I do have a 4 pump negative determined in 24hrs my uptake is 45.2 ml of alk
@CoralEuphoria
@CoralEuphoria 4 жыл бұрын
I actually don't dose lime water anymore. I mainly did it to keep the pH up. Since adding the bucket refugium , my pH stays above 8, so I stop dosing kalk, but also partly to keep things simple. As for dosing 2 part, my 120 gallon uses a little less than 300 mL of each part daily. Is divided into 24 doses every hour.

When you speak of stability , is your ALK kept at exact 8.0 ? is there any fluctuation at all ? and are you able to keep that number with the Cal Reactor ? Randy from BRS says .5 DKH fluctuation is acceptable in 24 hr period . Do you agree ?
@CoralEuphoria
@CoralEuphoria 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah i agree. I probably flucuate from 7 - 8.5. I run two-part now BTW. The key is not over reacting and correcting slowly when it deviates. Like if i check it and its too low, i just overdose by like 10ml per day until its back up where i want it. Good question.

Nice videos! When you were dosing 2 part, how did you determine what time during th e day to dose or did you dose all at one time? For example, if your tank consumes 1 Dkh per day, the the swing from 8 to 7 every day is kind of extreme right? Thanks!
@CoralEuphoria
@CoralEuphoria 5 жыл бұрын
I agree thats too much of a swing. My doser doses around the clock, every hour it would dose 1/24 of what I wanted each day. But if i had a doser that dosed continuously and that was determined by some kind of separate timer, I would dose late night or early morning to help counteract the pH drop that occurs overnight. I actually do this in my 20g quarantine tank with kalk, dosed with a BRS doser which turns on/off with a mechanical timer. As needed I just adjust the time it's on. Did that answer your question?
@mmpressey
@mmpressey 5 жыл бұрын
@@CoralEuphoria Yes you answered it for the most part. I'm just trying to figure out how I should dose. Cause I loose about 1 Dkh per day and that's about 20ml. But seems like Dkh gets too high when I dose 1 ml per hour. So I was thinking most during the night and every few hours during the day.

Hey I was just wondering what is an appropriate swing in your alkalinity right now I use the BRS two part but I’m only adjusting it every other day or every three days is that OK or should I be doing it every day I guess my question is is it OK to let your corals go that long in between adding your two-part all the corals in my system right now or just Frags

It depends how much you tank consumes. I think a daily alk swing over 0.5 is a little too much. So it sounds like you dose manually? If so try to automate somehow

Wow sounds like fun. I have never tried it but seems like people have success with it. I like to do water changes so it's not for me but maybe in the future ill try it 😀

Triton can be successful, IF you can get it in your hands for starters. Ive shocked my tank 3 times because its impossible to get product in your hands sometimes. They say its “less expensive” because your saving money on salt? Lets do some math. A box of reef crystals for 200G is what..$50? Thats practically the same as a triton ICP test. Then you have to worry about the sump configuration, which costs $ to upgrade or re-configure your current setup to switch chaeto and skimmer location They want a 10x turn over rate so now we have to invest in some higher pumps for a majority of people. 4 dosing pumps, 4 containers because the boxes leak, at least 2 mini pumps to keep those containers mixing because 3a and 3b have leaked on me before. Etc, etc, etc. Even buying 1 ICP test a month alone is the same as a box of salt for 200G. I tried triton for a year, liked it, good results but its expensive whether people admit it or not. I ended up going zeovit and it has been the best decision of my life. Oh and btw, triton never gave me 0 nitrates and phosphates since i like to feed heavily. I had to eventually put the filter socks back because my chaeto was turning into a nasty goo pile, so that benefit was gone. Once I put the socks back chaeto started growing but even with a 40 gallon section in my sump full of chaeto and 2 H360s spread over the chaeto didn’t give me 0 no3-po4. Zeovit was the only product that allowed me to feed as much as I wanted. After the triton failure i went old school and did 3 gallon water changes daily with the DOS. That kept everything in check but still didn’t get a ULNS. Thats when I went zeovit and it has been the best decision of my life. It took a bit to see results with triton and once I did, crash because I couldn’t get anymore. With ZeoVit and it didn’t take anytime at all. Fast and noticeable results extremely quick.

H380s, sorry. I would go with basic water changes or zeovit. I have 13 tangs in my tank and 12 other fish so its heavily stocked. Thats why I ultimately went zeovit. If it wasnt heavily stocked then I would have stayed with basic water changes.

You hava a beautiful tank. My po4 is always around 0.16. Nitrat 0 Ca 410 Kh 8.4 Mg 1120 Temp 79F Sg 1026 But my acro very slow to growth. Any suggest? I think po4 is too high. Im using rowaphos but never touch 0.03. Should i use macroalga reactor? My mag is the same. Around 1120. Is it the problem? Thanx for answer.
@CoralEuphoria
@CoralEuphoria 5 жыл бұрын
I agree your phos is a little high for my taste although some people have success at that level. I would bring it down to 0.03 - 0.07. I would also bring your magnesium above natural seawater, above 1280. I dont know if a macroalgae reactor will do the trick. Maybe. Is there a way to run RowaPhos more aggressively? Growth is also accomplished by being able to feed more while keeping your nutrients in control. In other words, can you dump in a good amount of food while keeping your nitrates and phosphates in check and/or without having algae problems. It usually takes a mature tank to pull this off.

Hey Bob, I did try it back in 2010 2011 when it first came out and I wasn't happy with it because it never return the same result if I checked the water sample two times in a row. It wasn't precise. I actually went on a 7 minute rant about this in the original footage, but I decided to leave it out.

I use rowaphos to keep phosphates down. for alk, ca and magnesium supplementation. generic products, like those from bulkreefsupply, do the job just fine. good luck :)

Decided not to. IMO best to have your pH around 8.2 - 8.4 if you can. Probably best for growth. But mine ranges from 8 - 8.2. Above 8 is where I try to keep mine

How much kalk do you dose. Is it night only for ph
@CoralEuphoria
@CoralEuphoria 2 жыл бұрын
I don't dose kalk anymore for a couple years since my bucket fuge keeps the pH up at night. Yes, the kalk before was mainly to mitigate the nighttime pH drop.

Another reason why many people don’t like running zero nitrates is because you’re SBS become more susceptible to tissue necrosis from alkalinity swings.
