This is a really cool setup. Simple. Works great and no drilling. I've been testing these overflows for the past year in a test tank. One problem I see in this one- the 'T' in the overflow tube must be ABOVE the bottom of the inlet tube that's inside of the weir. Otherwise, the overflow will suck the weir dry on pump shut off. I put a lot of testing on here if anyone wants to see. Flow rate testing, etc. I've had mine sit there with no power for a whole month one time. I plugged the pumps in and it took right off. I love this guy's tank and stand

Street_King apart from the test I did...I didnt run it fully yet because I've got to add more salt water in my tank..but I built 2 incase one fails but I think I'll only run one...the way it's set up is if the suction breaks and water doesnt go to the sump...the pump will eventually stop cuz that chamber will be empty....and if the pump breaks and the suction still works itll stop soon because if water is not being pumped back into the tank the pipe system will fail..so I dont see any real mess the worst is the loss of a $10 pump ..worst comes to worst

Should’ve cemented the ball valve above the connector because when you turn off the flow and go to unhook the overflow from itself, the water is stopped before where it is shut off at so you’ll just end up with water all over the floor and an automatic siphon running more from the tank on the floor.
@robyp
@robyp 6 жыл бұрын
i also tried many versions of this overflow but you always need to care for it.. a little air can accumulate and you don't see it until it's too late. In the end i drilled the tank and never looked back: it's much easier than it seems.

hi , i saw you adding another additional larger diameter inside the water inlet tube inside the tank , i guess this is to prevent the tank being drained dry during power outrage. However, if you put the larger diameter tube, water will be absorb from the higher level . Sediments and fish shit wouldnt be able to suck from bottom of the tank

Beautiful aquarium, stand and sump. To be honest there is a lot of bad advice here. The diy overflow can work but without an aqualifter or similar air/water pump at the top of the “u”, air will build up and the siphon will fail. Ur sump design wouldn’t let the return pump pump enough water to overflow the tank. But if your auto topoff is simple without multiple layers of redundancy and time limits, itll flood. If you were to use a 20g sump without baffles, you’ll end up with a good 15 gallons of water on the floor. The valve on a tank with a single drain is another disaster in the making. Restricting the flow to quiet the drain leaves little wiggle room for flow variance as your voltage swings and as snails, limpets, vermetids, algae and general detritus build up in the pump, return and drain lines. Again, safe enough with your setup but others could have a flood on their hands. Unless you have low flow, and an unrestricted durso drain(noisy, bubbles and salt spray), you need a minimum of two drains for the herbie method with one full siphon drain adjusted with a gate valve and one emergency overflow for when your main drain clogs. Dont worry, it will happen :) three drains is even better with a “bean animal” style overflow. Drilling a couple holes in the tank for an aftermarket overflow is MUCH safer, quieter and looks much nicer.

Hi Mike, Thanks for your valuable advice 👍 Yes I totally agreed with every single note you mentioned. I was hoping if this was on time of that video as it's about 2 years now and I was looking for such advice and I still looking for that, that was my first build and I learned a lot from it. You can find another builds on my channel which I considered some of your notes. Thanks again and keep your good advice as I really appreciate.

ReefAmorous glad to hear you’ve refined your setup since then, i’ll be sure to check out the rest of your videos! I hope I didn’t sound too critical, just trying to save someone from having a flood on their hands. Did your tank ever flood or was your auto top off redundant enough to prevent that?

ReefAmorous well I got the overflow running but it ain't so strong since I'm just using 25mm pvc so I think I have to jump up to maybe 2 1/2 inch to compensate my eheim 3000l/h pump variable to 1800l/h max height of 2.7m but it has to do 1.10m of height to the main tank and through 2 elbows which I heard affects the head height

Usually chose pipe can handel volume larger than what your pump can push. So in 1 inches pipe it can handle I think more 8000 liter pump per hour. Also it depends on the hight of the tank.

I just built this and I am testing it with a bucket full of water. It isn't working, so I must have missed something. In 7:06, when you "fill with water and close it", what are you closing? At 7:34, what are you opening? Did I miss something? Is that a cap or some kind of valve?
@ReefAmorous
@ReefAmorous 6 жыл бұрын
Yes dear in around min 7 you should 1- close the below valve 2- fill the pipe completely a water 3- close the air intake above and make sure no air can get in it 4- open the valve 5- after few seconds (and before it completely drop the whole water level in the tank) open the air intake again
