Thanks for tuning in! I specialize in solving lawn problems and implementing strategies to fix lawn problems. Weather you have crabgrass that's not dying, too much thatch, lawn fungus, over watering problems or an ugly lawn there's not a lawn problem I can't solve. Try the Ginja 5 Steps to diagnosing a lawn you'll be glad you did. Don't forget to checkout my playlist.
Reel mower vs rotary mower is a greatquestion. One step to achieving the ultimate lawn fix is to select a mower that cuts well. The best lawn mower 2020 in my opinion is allett mowers. I prefer a reel mow vs rotary mow because the cut quality of the reel mower is superior. No matter how you look at it a push reel mower vs a push rotary mower the reel mower wins. The reel cuts like sharp scissors where the rotary mower cuts like a machete.

Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower kzfaq.infoUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.

I too mowed approx 0.5 acre with a no engine reel mower. My dad was concerned with the safety issues of the power mowers of the 1960's. Then the drop dead engine was invented and I got a power mower and was glad . I have a 12 year old mower and when it needs replaced a 'reel' mower is being considered. Grass and debris in the streets ? Not back in my day.

Love your videos! They're very informative! Love how you explain in detail about how everything works and the symbiotic relations between each component of care and maintenance. My lawn is a hot mess right now, about 5 years worth of dead grass, debris, and other stuff that the cats have hunted, as well as at least 5 different types off weeds. Hoping to finally tackle this lawn and make those weeds my B... 😂

I've used this type of mower for many years and it's not necessary to have it professionally sharpened every year, unless you hit a stone and dink the blade. These mowers don't like stones, any lawn should be well raked with a powered lawn rake to remove anything that could damage the blade. The design of the blade is such that the two blades sharpen each other as they cut, once in a while I attach a sharpener to the bottom blade and run the blade while the machine is static for about five seconds, that's all it takes. An oil change and a new spark plug once a year is all that's necessary.

Reel mowers were common in the 60's, but they were top-heavy and fairly unwieldy, even propelled units, so it took an older teen / adult to operate it. I suspect the rotary became dominant simply because you could pawn the mowing job off to 11-year-olds. This was when I was around 11. Now I'm really showing my age, because I don't recall seeing a kid of ANY age mowing a lawn in at least ten years, so we've come full circle to an adult-only chore.

Super cool mower Brett. Does everything but drive itself...you're taking it to the next level! Have to say I'm a little bummed and not because of the obvious jealousy, lol. One of the things I loved most about your channel, besides we are in the same area, is everything you did was within my budget. So I'd look at what you were doing and the results you got and knew/hoped I could see the same results following your advice. I got a Sun Joe after seeing what it did for your lawn and love using mine too. But this is next level and beyond my budget. And while it probably doesn't make a significant difference, there will always be a voice in my head wondering will I be able to get the results I see in your lawn. Those reel mowers must be worth it, they are on absolutely every lawn channel over the past year. Hope you love yours and enjoy each mow!

I remember many years ago my grandmother had a manual push reel mower and I hated it at the time. Now I wish i had one. The only reason i don't is because my lawn isn't level enough for a reel mower to work on it at this time. My personal opinion is the cut on the reel mower is way better and will keep your grass healthier with its amazing sharp blades and the ability to cut real low. Low grass blades promote better lateral spread of KBG which is my favorite grass type and with less energy being used up top of the grass, the roots will grow stronger and deeper... The reel mower is the REAL DEAL and i now wish i owned one. Great video...

I just started reel mowing.. I have a true cot 21 inch and I bought a Sun Joe cordless 16 inch cut. I use my Kobalt 80 volt to do the trimming or outline of curbside and driveway, sidewalk. I remove all grass with my sweeper. Ok. Back to the reel mowers. Since I've started reel mowing, my yard looks 100 percent better. The Bermuda grows tighter or more dense. It's unbelievable the difference. Now it took about 3 cuttings, but you notice it. I cutt my Bermuda twice a week and only trim once a week. I like both reel mowers, but favor the Sun Joe. Quieter than the tru cut and also the tru cut will work the hell out of you. The Sun Joe you do have to push. But the reels are power by the ion 24 volt battery... I also purchased a Sun Joe Scarifier to use next year. I bought a dethatcher but quickly learned, you don't Dethatch Bermuda or any other grasses that have runner's. It will YANK the grass out of the lawn. Bad advice from someone on KZfaq about using a dethatcher on Bermuda. Have fun...

nice! ....I've only got one section of my backyard that would be suitable for a low cut with a reel mower, so I just got a manual push reel mower for that area(so reel mowing can be affordable to anyone) now just getting that yard smooth and rock free to start using it soon here - but I'll only be cutting it that short in the spring and fall, so I'll still use my powered rotary mower when its hot; this way will also make so its not so horrible hot n sweaty using the manual push reel mower in the peak of summer - thats the plan anyway

My dad has a reel mower. It's maybe 50-60 years old I'm guessing. Last year I started taking care of his lawn. I got an EGO electric mower last year to trim around all his trees, so we got rid of his push mowers. He had about 5, none of which worked. For whatever reason, I wanted to keep the reel mower. It was more for antique value than anything. I had no clue about em at the time. Barely know about em now. To me it was sort of like keeping a black and white tv. Now I'm leaning towards trying to fix it up and seeing how it cuts.

When do you believe is the best time to level the lawn with sand? I’m here I’m nor cal and have until the end of May before the extreme heat comes in
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 4 жыл бұрын
spring time is the absolute best but I've done both. spring time allows more time for the lawn to recover from an aggressive leveling. If you're not going super aggressive you can level anytime throughout the growing season.

Hi I have a question I use liquid fertiliser, I have a 25 gallon sprayer. Can I mix iron sulphate and Miracle Grow Plus Weedkiller Weedol in my 25 gallon sprayer what proportion of mix would you recommend. Forgot to say I have just over seeded as well.
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 4 жыл бұрын
If you just over seeded I wouldn't do any herbicides for at least 9 weeks. the herbicides will cause issues and potentially kill the new grass. To answer your question on the sprayer you'll need to figure out how much liquid is coming out per minute, then you'll need to figure out how fast you go through 1000 sq ft. I have a video that helps people understand calibration. highly recommend you watch it.

Looks like a fun mower Ginja! Me, I got a 21" deck (Honda HRC) last season and love it! Since your 20B cuts cleaner, can you violate the 1/3 rule, or not really? I just stepped my mow height down to 2" and I am scalping in spots where it's uneven. I am mowing 2 times per week right now. I think if I were to cut at 1" I would have to mow every other day.

I've been dying to get that aeration plugger. my thoughts are it doesn't have wide enough holes to be a true core aerator. with that said i believe it has a ton of value and can be used every 6 weeks. its on my list of buys.

Pest and Lawn Ginja I Have a few questions and notes if you can give me a few tips. For example I am taking this kind of a project I have been in quarantine for a few weeks and looks it can be 4-6 more weeks perfect for trying to figure this out🤣. I am sorry if this is too long but here we go. Like you know Zoysia is very strong and we have sun here 365 years a day so where ok there, I just started using Basagran for thin weeds and Comfort for the others let me know if I am ok there. Also my lawn is 85% ok I believe don’t have irrigation working on that also, I need to know how many times I need to use the Basagran and Commfort and how many times and timelines for fertilizer. Also how tall the grass shout be for the top fessing? Should I do the fertilizer after the aeration and before the top dressing? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks man great content. Send me your logo, I will make some hats for or T-shirts for you when we open.
@rondapro

Pest and Lawn Ginja also I want to buy a really good feel machine but I think I should buy a rotary to take the grass down so I don’t have to be messing around with the reel meaning I can buy an $400 machine that gets it to 1 and then use the reel to .5 until is ready to go lower. Do you think is a good plan? Also I don’t know how much water zoysia really needs.
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 4 жыл бұрын
all great questions. I like to spot spray herbicides as I have active weeds. keep in mind your biennial weeds will be coming for an additional 18 months after you start using pre emergents. It's just how it works. so I would plan on spot spraying every 4 weeks or as necessary. when it comes to aeration and fertilizer, doesn't matter really. I would do your top dressing after you aerate. just personal preference. gets the dirt into the holes where it belongs. I would buy the reel you want, buy once cry once. just know you have to increase how many times you mow per week the lower you go.
@rondapro
@rondapro 4 жыл бұрын
Pest and Lawn Ginja Thanks Ginja the good thing is I don’t have the weather problem here is basically 85-95 all year plus 300 days of sun minimum so from what I have read the grass is pretty though and reacts super to sun and I can control the water. They recomended me 2 different herbicides 1 for broad and 1 for thin weeds (Basagran and Confort) but I think tenacity kills both and it will be simpler to use but again I don’t know. So you said to spot herbicide every 4 weeks but how frequent should I fertilize and sorry for all the questions but I am a super rookie on this.

I still have the same Snapper 21" rotary mower that I used back when I was mowing 30+ yards a week in high school. (early 90s) The B&S finally gave up the ghost 2 seasons ago and I replaced it with a (DON'T JUDGE ME!) Harbor Freight engine, that has run like a champ thus far. In my opinion this thing has far and away the best self propelled mechanism of any mower I've used. It's easy to engage and disengage, it's rear wheel drive so it will still pull itself when you lift the front wheels up (if you want it to) it actually has a differential, so it doesn't tear the grass up when you make turns and the turntable transmission is dead simple and gives a great range of speeds. Having said all of that, I'm _trying_ to get my lawn level but with some medium/large oak and maple trees the roots are making that a challenge, but if I can get it decently level I may look into getting a reel mower at least for the front yard.
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 4 жыл бұрын
Don't get down on the harbor freight motors. they're basically re-purposed honda engines. same parts and everything. I buy them for my service company. wouldn't have it any other way. predator for life.

@@pestandlawnginja I can't tell you how much that just brought a smile to my face. My late father (who's lawn I inherited and I'm trying to level) used to say "I wouldn't have it any other way" all the time. It was pretty much his catch phrase. Also glad to hear a good review of the predator engines (from someone who's opinion I trust) The reviews on the site were good, but you never know who is writing those. I’ve seen quite a few of these introduced this year on some channels did Allet just start importing into the US recently or something? They look really quality, the cartridge system is very similar to swardman mowers. I just wish I could find a reel mower that’s less than $2,000 the wife won’t let me spend that much on a mower 🤣. For now I’ll just stick with my $20 Craigslist special lol. I did my first cut of the season this year at 1” and it does a beautiful cut for being a manual push reel mower. Just a ton of work and no rollers. I wish more people used reel mowers around here so the second hand market was bigger.
