I worked in this industry for many years. You have demonstrated a lack of basic knowledge in the subject. The weight painted in the cylinder is the EMPTY WEIGHT OF THE CYLINDER, used by the company when refilling it. The employee refilling it at the depot enters this figure into the scales (like zeroing a kitchen scale with the container when weighing food) and that way they are able to make sure that the correct amount of gas is put in. It's a 47KG cylinder, which takes 47Kg - 96 litres - of gas. Still, at least your mistake results in your UNDERFILLING that particular cylinder. However, there are other, smaller cylinders where the empty weight is MORE than the capacity, and your advice could result in a fatal accident. Finally, not all cylinders are capable of withstanding the pressure of autogas, which is mainly propane. Some Spanish cylinders for example, are designed exclusively for butane which has a much lower pressure and there is a serious risk that they will rupture catastrophically in being filled with autogas because the walls are too thin... As someone else said, "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing"

The printed numbers on the gas canister represent the weight of the canister when it’s empty, when the canister is filled professionally it’s put on scales that have that weight entered into them and then the correct amount of liquid gas is put into the canister by the scales automatically turning off the supply when full by allowing for the canister weight.

Refilling propane tanks are normal thing here in California, most of us have a portable gas burning BBQ, so using propane tanks and refilling them is common, of coarse the gas station people must refill the tanks for safety reasons but nothing dangerous or out of ordinary.
@lajoswinkler Жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure you don't have propane in California. It's more expensive to separate propane from butane, so a combination is sold whenever possible, called _liquefied petroleum gas_ (LPG). Propane is sold in very cold areas during winter because it has higher volatility and lower boiling point.
@tshephard27935 жыл бұрын
Yeah LPG is approximately, Half the weight of water. E.g. in Australia a 45kg has bottle will take about 88 litres. With out any problems. Although I've seen people just fill the bottles until the auto gas bowser reaches is pressure max. And turn off automatically. ( just like filling a car) Thanks for the video!

to John . Mitch - In Bulgaria Just drive up with your gas bottle stand it by the pump, the attendant comes say's how much, Then fills it to your requirements. Gas costs about 20p a litre. I had to refill my house hob bottle last year ( summer 2018 ) it cost me just over 10 lev £5 and will last me about 2 years. If you buy an empty or sell a gas bottle in Bulgaria the seller has to provide a pressure test certificate. The UK Prices at 69p a litre are a rip off even at the pump.

Somewhere on the valve guard ( the steel surrounding the valve) will be stamped the history of the cylinder and the testing it has undergone, if the last test was more than ten years ago it is illegal to refill the cylinder, Flogas should have warning signs stating this and the fact that cylinders should only be filled by weight and not by liquid levels, the tare weight of the cylinder was 33.4 kg so the maximum fill would be 33.4 + 47.2 = 80.6 kg, the other safety related issue is that he was carrying the cylinder laid on its side which is a very hazardous method of transport. They should always be carried in the upright position and secured so they cannot come loose as a result of the relative movement of the carrying vehicle. I suggest he spends a little time on the internet reading the LPGA information on the safe handling, storage and transport of lpg , it won’t hurt the site management to read it also.

As a German, I can say that our LPG is a 40:60 or 60:40 mixture of propane and butane with a density up to 0.6 kg/L. (density from wikipedia) So, if you have a 33kg bottle that would make 33/0.6=55L minus 20%, so 44L of LPG gas that can be filled.
@notommr5 жыл бұрын
In the UK its 1ltr of lpg = 0.5kg 2ltr =1kg The Bottle weight is 47kg minus 20% 9.40 = 37.6kg x 2 ltr = 75.2 ltr x 55 pence = £41.36 at today`s price. I got a refilled bottle today £85.00 that`s why I am here!!The guy in the video filled it to 70ltrs to be safe . Hefty price he was paying per ltr though!!

The number you're pointing at (33.4) is the Tare (Empty cylinder weight) not it's contents weight. As you stated at the start the gas weight is 47kg. At least the number you're working on is lower than 47kg. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
@spudhead1695 жыл бұрын
This is true, however, the more weight the cylinder has, the bigger it is and the more gas it can hold. There is a direct correlation between the tare and the gas capacity. Although he has the details wrong, the math he was using was correct.
@richardwilliams70203 жыл бұрын
@@spudhead169 Not true. The tare weights vary depending on the thickness of the steel used in construction. Older cylinders can weigh almost twice the amount of modern ones.

Adapters to do this are all over Amazon/eBay. I’d love to do it but I’m pretty sure the petrol stations near me won’t entertain it. You could try leaving it in the boot of your car so they think your car is a gas conversion but they get funny about you having the boot lid or doors open at petrol stations. Also they may call the Calor gas or Flo gas police to come and put you in prison immediately (without passing go or collecting £200 - apparently). Robbing so-an-sos. I notice this guy is doing this in a rural area, probably at a privately owned petrol station so they’re probably quite relaxed country folk.

Can't believe this is on KZfaq, just the amount of debate in the comments shows how much interpretation and potential for mistakes there is. Anyone using enough gas to make a substantial difference to their costs should just go and get themselves some proper 4 hole refillable cylinders that don't need any dodgy adaptors, have a pressure gauge, a safety pressure relief valve, and most importantly, a built in automatic cut-off that stops the pump when the bottle reaches 80%. If you get through lots of gas, you can get 160ltr refillable tanks you can fix into a vehicle or even a small dedicated trailer.
@dantronics16825 жыл бұрын
I dont think you can get 4 holes in the UK, wasnt it outlawed after the mont blanc tunnel fire?

@turboslag Жыл бұрын
I started to do this a few years ago at the one and only filling station local to me with an LPG pump. It went ok for about 14 months but then one day they stopped me!! The manager came out and said it was illegal and pointed at a big notice saying portable gas cylinders were not permitted to be refilled. There are no alternative stations close enough to make it viable, so I can no longer do this. I never had a problem though and it was saving me a fortune on running my gas central heating in a rural location with no mains gas. Don't know how my gas cylinder supplier can justify charging more than a forecourt price for gas, and they are now even charging a market volatility charge and for delivery! They used to deliver free. So it now costs me almost £100 for a 47KG cylinder, which can last as little as a week in very cold weather! This is in the west mids area of the UK.

When it's full(80%) the OPD will kick and stop te pump. Close the bleed valve, disconnect and you are done. The larger tanks don't have an OPD, but you can guage by the vent . @andrewwheeldon3027 Жыл бұрын
In the Uk it is mainly propane, in Europe it is usually a mix. when I had LPG powered vehicles I would often have to adjust my mixture ratio after filling up abroad. butane is more energy dense and heavier but liquifies at a higher temp. If you get a butane bottle to a little below freezing it will give off zero vapor and insufficient pressure where as a propane bottle will work fine at -20 or so.

I have a tank with a water capacity of 109.8 kg. What would you say is the refill capacity in liters? I think I've figured it out but want to see if you've got the same.

The tanks we have have a small device in them to prevent over-filling, Not that i think one should rely on theses, Nice to know anyhow.

They have been doing this in the outback in Australia for years

They do a lot of illegal stuff in the outback. It's why so many bogans and ferals live out there.

Where can you get adapters to refill bottle? And i have a 19kg bottle so what is 80% in litres ? Thanks
@dantronics16825 жыл бұрын
19kg is water weight which is roughly 19l of water -20% which is slightly over 15l, you can get adapters from websites
@rogerblackwood88153 жыл бұрын
ebay, gumtree, amazon etc! the idiot who has replied is why people think it is dangerous, his maths are stupid! A 19 kg nottle will mean 2 x 19 = 38 litre capacity, so take 20% of 38 (7.6) and you got your fill figure of 30.4kg. So just to be safe, put 30 litres in the bottle, and at 59 pence pre litre it is going to cost £17.70 instead of Calor's rip off £36!
@rogerblackwood88153 жыл бұрын
By the way they are about £20 for an adaptor with a non return valve!

Didn't think the petrol stationmaster would encourage this as bottles don't gave a saggy cut off value

Your 'Calor Gas Heater' is BUTANE? ...... Blue Bottle? Butane is a LOWER pressure than propane ( RED bottle ). ...... Propane should NEVER be indoors in a home, and used with care indoors in a ventilated workshop. Propane and butane bottles should NEVER be placed on their sides, such as in a vehicle, as if the pressure relief valve gives, you will get liquified gas, not just gas, which will probably kill anyone in the car.
