In this two part series, I show you how to refinish a wooden counter top to restore it to its original condition.
For this video, Bosch kindly let me borrow one of their GEX125-150 AVE Random Orbit Sanders as well as a load of their M480 Abrasive Mesh Pads. I have long been a fan of these abrasives and am pleased to have an opportunity to work with Bosch to promote them.
Want to give them a try? Get them here: bit.ly/2lQIVNM
In the next video, I will show you how to apply an Osmo finish which will provide protection against wine, cola and beer and provide a long lasting finish for years to come.

Great video. My tops have become very sticky since last oiling with Howdens oil 3 years ago. Should I follow the same steps as this video? You didn’t mention your tops being that sticky prior to sanding so just checking before I commence. Thanks

I also think despite being a paid promo, it still seems honest. After watching him for a few weeks, I get the impression he'd have declined if they'd forced him to say stuff he didn't agree with. I'm aware paid promo's force you to use their scripts but pretty sure he'd have rejected it if he didn't agree with what they were saying.

The first half of the kzfaq.infoUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.

Hi Matt. I received my M480 net discs I ordered the other day as I decided to try them after watching this video. THEY ARE GREAT. I can now see why you like these rather than normal discs. They are everything you mentioned here. Less dust, no clogging,easy to use with great results. Thanks for the heads up on this one and I really think this is going to change my idea on sanding. I tried a piece of wood from a small table top I was making and the M480 got rid of the snipe lines I was trying to get rid of in no time at all. Thanks again Matt. If we don’t try these things we never learn !

This is so informative for somebody like me who has never worked with wood. The product advice, easy instructions and the little bits of knowledge and tips are brilliant. For those who complain about product advertising, it does warn you at the start of the video that there will be product advertising. Thank you Matt for making this such an easy set of videos to follow.

Matt, you're giving free information to people for no pay. If you do a sponsored video, then you are making money for giving out entertainment and information and letting people know about products that will make their lives a bit easier. If anyone complains about that, fuck 'em. You are doing a service by making these videos, and shouldn't have to waste time explaining to anyone why you're spending time doing a sponsored vid. You need to make a living, and no one should fault you for that, especially while they are enjoying free content. Thanks for the vid, and now, thanks to you, I've discovered Axminster's website, and now know they deliver these pads to the US. Boom and Boom. Very grateful.

I know some people have said the video was a bit long, but I would highlight two things. 1. Having seen a recent video from the Gosforth Handyman on how hard it is to make any sort of reasonable financial return for the time involved in making videos for KZfaq, I can completely see why paid promotions are part of the mix. If it means you make a crust from these videos and therefore are able to continue providing good content then sitting through the odd paid promotiinal video is a price that is well worth paying IMHO. 2. Based on your recommendation I picked up a pack of the Bosch net pads on Saturday. They are a revelation! Now admittedly I have not used any other net pads so can't make a comparison, but wow what a difference they have made to dust collection on my cheap as chips Lidl sander. I have been thinking of spending big and buying a Mirka Deros, but think I will hold off for a whole now as the dust collection on the Lidl is so much better now. So you clearly have the integrity to only promote products that do actually do what you say. Terry.

So I love your stuff Mr Estlea, and off the back of this I went and got some of the M480 net for my Bosch sander to refinish an oiled wooden kitchen countertop. I had some regular perforated sanding pads also. End result... the mesh clogged waaay easier than the regular pads - I'm guessing because the holes were finer and the oil finish on the top gummed up the holes and blocked them much easier than the bigger holes on the regular pad. The abrasive on them does seem really good but ultimately - for this very job, not as good as the old way

Compared to other videos on KZfaq, the sponsorship stuff wasn't bad at all. It was informative, and not asking me to design a new website or use some product completely not related to woodworking. A bit long, but otherwise fine.

This was very helpful as I try to repair a wooden countertop with water/mold stains on it. Tried one pass with the random orbital sander with the mesh pads and it seems to be working, and looks a lot better. I have to figure out how to do the vacuum extraction as the little collection bag on the sander I have was not very efficient and there was a lot of dust left. Thanks for making it seem like a doable project for a novice. I am going to try to Osmo as well.

I finally was able to use Osmo Polyx Oil in Raw and… it’s stunning! I built a solid hickory vanity for my Mom’s bath reno and I’m amazed at how well this Osmo Polyx in Raw kept the natural tone while also bringing out Hickory’s unique wide variety of tones and colors. I fortunately have a Menards that carries hickory and a handful of other local hardwoods like mahogany and alder, maple and anyways I was able to pick out some very unique, full of depth in color variety boards and anyways I didn’t realize how many colors are hidden in hickory till I put this finish on. It really protects the wood from becoming orange or yellow while also adding protection which I wasn’t sure it would. I’ve seen comments say that it didn’t feel like it’d protect the wood… I disagree, it’s just a few hrs after applying my first coat and it feels tough already! Of course it’ll be even stronger tomorrow once I add the second coat which I’m using their Clear Polyx Oil in Satin because I don’t want to lighten the wood too much either by adding a second coat. Anyways this product seems durable, thicker than I anticipated once in the curing process. It requires a ton of elbow grease! It’s thin when applied but has to be buffed in and across the grain to get it to spread so his efforts on the video are legit! I used a white scotch brite pad I found at Autozone since stores in my area don’t carry these anymore. I mean you really have to rub the finish in and spread it manually, it took more time than expected and more physical work but well worth it. As it’s drying it feels like a thicker coat than I expected yet still feels like wood but it definitely has protection. It’s my new go to for probably everything that’s lighter woods so white and red oaks, hickory, maple, alder would look good because it’s so orange toned I bet this would mellow alder out a bit. Don’t use on dark woods like mahogany and walnut!

Hi, I thought I'd share my experience. I watched this video (as well as the next one about finishing with osmo oil) and set to work sanding our oak worktops. The recommended bosch sander has been discontinued but we bought the equivalent Bosch replacement and found it to be excellent. I didn't purchase an extractor like the one used in the video but bought an attachment which fitted onto our vaccuum cleaner and this worked very well with the recommended mesh sanding mats. The only mess we had really was when the cleaner bags were full and needed replacing which happened three or four times during the process. The area I sanded was about three or four times the size of the one in the video and went round the sink and cooker. I did use more course sanding pads than Matt did but we seemed to have varnish on our worktops. Again, we followed the advice in terms of the various grit sizes. I also used a lot more sandpaper for the edges than Matt did I assume that this was down to the amount of varnish I had to remove. The job was straight forward and the sanding matt/sander combination was great. This was my biggest fear as having light sanded dust in the kitchen doesnt really bear thinking about. I followed the advice on the osmo oil and used the matt clear finish recommended. Again I followed the advice on using cloths to spread the oil thinly and came back after 8 hours to do another coat and then another after another 8 hours. The resulting finish was very nice, I was careful to follow Matts advice on how to do the sanding. My only negative is that only a few weeks ago the finish was perfect but now we have lots of stains all over the worktops. Osmo oil seems to be mostly used for floors and I am surprised at how easily it lets in stains, depsite us being quick to mop us spills. You also have to be quite careful cleaning it as it seems to come off on the cloths. I had hoped that refinishing the worktops would last us a while but I can see myself doing it all over again quite soon. Having said that, its not a difficult job and I expect I could get it done in half the time it took me last time I did it Thanks Matt, great video. I learned a lot and its nice to have tidy worktops again :)

I've been using net discs for some time. They are great but.....1) you can't go near an edge or profile without them snagging and lifting off the backing pad. 2) they don't last any longer than traditional pads on some surfaces other than wood 3) you really ought to use an intermediate backing pad if you want to make your backing pad last 4) if you want the best extraction get a sander with 80+ extraction holes, such as the Bosch Pro sanders with 115 holes.

Hi, great video! I'm refurbishing a gplan extending table and have sanded it ready to coat. I watched your second video first to see about the osmo oil. Anyway I was happy with the finish i achieved by sanding however I started with 180 then went to 240 grit. After watching this video I realised I could have used a courser paper initially to remove the scratches better. I still have a few small scratches and wondered wether I could go back over the table top with 80, then 180 and 240 again? Thanks.

Intersting video. As has been stated 'A sponsored video' So be it. I use Festool tools having been a hobby DIY for years and now into retirement spending beer/disposable money on fantastic boys toys. I have the 150 Rotex and 150 random orbital, which I use about every 6 months on over 8 meters of Walnut kitchen worktops using the Festool sanding discs attached to dust extractor at the grits used by Matt. Having seen the video i shall give the Bosch pads a go and then have an opportunity to compare. I think the main lesson from the video is that extraction is key on such a project. As was outlined any dust left behind causes further abrasion and will cause the end finish to be impaired. We watch these You tube clips because TV is Cr.p and take away pieces that we want. So Matt keep posting, I do not agree with everything you post but love your posts.

Yes, Matt, quite frankly, you do have to use that disclaimer. You may get away with it legally where you are (some people have not) but it is simply demanded by any sensible journalistic code of conduct. You are a superb craftsman, and a solid provider of information, please don't compromise it. I understand it's a balancing act to work profit into the equation when you make your videos, but I do wish there was a way for us to rely completely on independent advice. I have bought tools on your recommendation. They have all been good. Still... independent information would be golden. Good luck!

Actually, Osmo Polyx can be applied beautifully with a roller, and would be the recommended applicator for this type of work surface. You need to apply a very thin coat using a 6mm microfibre roller. It goes on very quickly and two coats will build up a solid work surface. Give it a try, you’ll never want to apply it another way again!

Well spotted! I’m using 3m ear defenders and respirator at the moment. As for eye protection, still trying to find something comfortable!

This is a job for a cabinet scraper. No need for fancy sanding appliances. Especially if you want to avoid dust so bad.

Absolutely. I was going to make the same comment. A card scraper will remove the finish and leave a smoother surface than a sander. New finish looks better too.

Hi bud just after some advice I have a solid wood worktop and I followed your exact instructions and even bought the same sander and discs.I’ve coated the worktop in the same material you have (gave 4 coats) it looks great but only problem if I put cup bottle or anything down with a wet bottom it water stains the worktop really easily.What am I doing wrong? Cheers

Can this process be done on an Ikea engineered wood oak worktop? I've looked where the sink has been cut in and it looks like there's a couple of mm's of covering. How much does this process take off? Is there a better method? It's doing my head in with all the water marks and rings left from the bottom of red wine bottles. Thanks in advance.

The link to buy a sander isn't working... Also, if I did this outdoors on the one day when it doesn't rain, just how much dust would it create - would it appear to have snowed, or being Scotland would it all blow away and no one would know it had happened? Thanks! A really helpful video.

I purchased the osmo product from watching your 1st video on this kitchen counter. I am now nervous that you are refinishing within a year. I have finished our dining room table that is walnut with osmo. The table will have a lot of wear with many a family meals. I am hoping for a much longer finish result. Please advice.

I can't find those Bosch Net M480 Abrasive Discs anywhere in stores or even online. Not even eBay or Amazon has them. The only place I found them was Axminster and the shipping was crazy expensive. It's kind of weird that they would pay for an ad and not have them available to buy anywhere.

Wow, the new shop looks REALLY different and you may have to do something about that cat infestation. Cool info, I've never tried mesh pads though TBH I very rarely use any machines for sanding. Next time I do though, I will definitely give them ago. P.S.: Don't make a mess (or if you do, clean it up)

Hi I hope you are still available to reply. Please can I just ask how you would use this to sand in the corners? Or do you have to use a different corner style sander?

why didn't you use a planer (you sure had some good reasons)? they are easy to clean up afterwards and deliver a stunning finish. Moreover they are pleasently quiet.

I have thought about using these pads, but from my understanding they mess up the velcro on the sander pad, any issue with that?
@mrdo9081
@mrdo9081 5 жыл бұрын
The likes of Abranet have a interface pad to go between the mesh pad and the sander to stop the sander velcro overheating - not sure whether Bosch do the same, depends on your sander too.

hi Matt my 125 mm Bosch needs a new base and new dust box, so in thinking about a total new sander. is the one your using in the vid the Bosch one that does some kind of turbo mode ?
@MattEstlea
@MattEstlea 5 жыл бұрын
No this isn’t the turbo sander, this is the GEX125-150. It’s only a random orbit sander :)

The picture disappears at 8mins 30. Shame however I think I got some good info anyway. I do have a question. What grit do you use if you don't know what wood the top is made of? It was already I stalled before we moved I to out house.

15:16 bummber. But seriously, I have gained a lot of knowledge from you based on my experience with regular 6-hole pads. I already have some spare, so I guess when I need new ones, I'll definitely try out mesh pads. Also, I recently watched your video about this vacuum cleaner and again, based on my experience, simple constructions vacuums like my Metabo just clog up the filter, which is kind of annoying. I am starting to recocnice a pattern, that Bosch could be the way for a somewhat serious woodworker, next to Festool.
