Actually it was Shankara who did this because before him Buddhism was stronger and it was he that re established vedanta and and there for the brahmanas and veda get back more significance. It was a pure philosophical dispute were buddhism/advaita lacks some answers and knowledge. But of course as a Buddhist he didnt see it ; )
