I think she was given mis-information. At one point I thought I heard San Francisco which is where I am from. Everyone is required to pay child support. If you don’t pay child support the court will attempt to garnish your wages and income. If you continue to fail to pay child support you will be held in contempt of court, your license will be taken away, and you can even face jail time. In California the court will not garnish SSI but it will garnish SSDI. No matter what, if somebody doesn’t pay, the amount that they owe accrues meaning the balance owed keeps growing. This does not happen until a child support case is filed. Child support is owed from the date of when the paperwork is submitted, not when an order is finally granted. This is why it is so important to file for child support even if you dont think you’ll get anything. For example, if somebody submits an application to receive child support May 1 and a judge finally issues a support order on September 1, the person filed against owes support from starting May 1 so there would be 4 months of arrears immediately due plus the monthly payments starting Sept 1. Some deadbeats don’t pay for decades but then eventually get their lives together and are surprised when they find out they owe $300,000 in child support. Lawyers will always advise you to file for support no matter what.

I don’t think we should be making fun of him. He has a processing disorder, a learning disability. This is what’s so hard about both teaching and raising learning disabled kids: you know that, one day, people will see them as adults and expect them to function to the level of someone without a disability, and there won’t be much empathy because they don’t “wear” their disabilities, like people with physical challenges do. It’s honestly scary for parents of autistic children, esp those of us with black boys. My son wouldn’t follow directions if he were scared in a police situation; he’d start rocking, growling, and shouting some line in his head over and over again. I hope all this ABA therapy works, or I’ll have to shadow him forever, and as far as I know, I’m still ineligible for a “forever” life contract.
