I work at a grocery store, and an older woman (maybe about 80 or 85) needed me to bring her groceries to her car. "A teal Civic," she said. When I got to the car, I was amazed. It was an EH2 just like this one; definitely garage kept, that loud teal paint and body were in near perfect condition, the interior was clean and still a deep gray, unfaded by the sun, the rear cargo area carpets were recently vacuumed... I couldn't believe it. Her plate number indicated that she was the first and only owner of the car (plate was about 20-22 years old), and she apparently babied it all those years. Babied it to the point where even those mid-nineties NJ plates, notorious for fading and peeling quickly, were in perfect condition as well. What an honor and privilege to see such a showroom-quality EH2 in 2018.

Early-mid 90s Japanese compacts/sports cars are simply some of the best cars ever manufactured. Something magical about them. Small, affordable, reliable, cleanly styled, well engineered cars, and they often don't even need to be fast in order to be desirable and fun to drive!

You hardly have to have a job if you own one of these. So cheap to drive and fix. I think I spent a total of $17 the last 2 times my car broke down, combined over like 4 years. I drove mine for 21 years and it currently has 585,000 miles on it.

This is one of the most philosophically beautiful car video I've ever, and probably will ever watch. For that, Mr. Regular, I thank you.

I have a 1992 Civic VX, white, that I bought brand new and it is still my daily driver. 504,000 miles on it, still looks great, no rust, fun to drive.

I feel that another reason something like this won't exist is because I don't see an 'average' consumer getting something with less than 100HP, purely out of mis-guided principles.

I came here to look at an old Honda, not to get feels. Actually, scratch that, this is why I'm here. This show (for a lack of a better word) is now scarily relatable. And that's why I love it.

In 2001 I bought my first car with my own money. It was a 1994 EJ Civic Coupe, and let me tell you, I treated that car like shit. I ragged it out and drove it EVERYWHERE, including a 130 mile daily commute to my office in Knoxville, Tennessee from the mountains in Scott County Tennessee. It had > 200K on the ticker when I lost control and put it into a telephone pole in 2003 at what the investigators said was about 80MPH on impact. I should have died. I have still never found a car I loved more. It saved me from death in spite of myself and my own stupidity. This review is everything. So many memories. Rest In Pieces 1994 EJ Civic Coupe

So i did some research: turns out the VX EH2 did in fact come standard with alloy rims.

Fun fact, the VX's alloy rims were made by Enkei specifically for the VX, they didn't come on any other Honda.

I'm becoming scared to watch RCR anymore. It seems like every few videos Mr. Regular makes you question your existence. Cars are time capsules more than anything else I can think of, highlighting the passage of time.

The segment of this video about the car meaning more than just a car really resonated with me. I drive a 2002 v6 mustang with a manual transmission. it's my first car. Its got more comforts that this car for sure, like AC and power steering (sometimes i wish it didn't with that noisy ass pump but oh well), but for me, it really does mean freedom and independence. I've gotten lost in it, I've been stuck in the middle of nowhere when my crappily rebuilt alternator gave up, I bounced around an empty parking lot like a frog with parkinsons while learning to drive stick in it, I've pushed it hard enough to hear air getting between the windows and the weather stripping, I've drifted in it by accident because it lacks traction control and I have worn out tires, i've learned to work on cars with it, i've experienced all these great things that I'm going to carry with me as fond memories for the rest of my life. Its got imperfections, but its 100% mine, and I love it. I've always liked cars, but my little underpowered wannabe muscle car made me love cars. You get it Mr. Regular, you get it.

As a driver of a EH hatch, this video nails the feeling of the whole car perfectly. It is the perfect incarnation of everything we want to remember 90s cars for, and is pure bliss to drive. Can't be mad in one, since there's nothing to be mad at. One of the best cars Honda ever made, and I have yet to find a car that embodies its sense of pure joy better.

This is the type of car that can rack up a million miles. It's just that reliable.

why do we need triple exhausts, fake air vents and edgy-complex design on the 2017 civic type R when a 1995 civic sir looks cool with such a simple design.

Those are the original VX wheels. They used those alloys because they were super light compared to steelies.

I have an all original red 1994 VX, (looks just like video) with 323,000 miles on it & original clutch & engine. I bought it with 92k in 2002. Still drive it 45mi each way to work every day. I recently tuned it up, put synthetic oil, running super unleaded, & removed the A/C belt & it's running better than ever. Has some oil leaks of course, but not that bad. I'm shooting for 500,000mi if possible. Even installed a Bluetooth stereo :) The 1994 VX was factory rated at 51mpg while the 1995 was 55mpg. Don't believe those numbers folks. You can get _MORE_ depending upon your driving habits. If you drive 50-60 mph, you can get 60+ mpg!! I've personally seen 57mpg out of my 1994. There are internet stories of people getting up to 75mpg with a couple mods. Besides the tremendous mileage, you'd be amazed what fits in the car. It actually seats 5 adults more comfortably than newer cars I've been in. There is tons of leg room in the back. The space in the hatchback is incredible. I used to load it up with tons of stuff to go work on properties & helping friends move, who couldn't believe how much fit in there. I love my car and refuse to sell it, no matter how many friends tell me to get rid of it. Still get offers for it on the street. I've got an Audi A3, 88 Porsche Targa, & a motorcycle, but will keep the Civic till it dies..or I do! The Civic was bought to replace my 3-cylinder Daihatsu hatchback (43mpg) that wouldn't pass smog, which was another fantastic car one notch below the VX. The A3 was bought to replace the VX, thinking it had it, but has been 4 years...still going. I've rattled my brain for years wondering WHY..WHY...WHY can they not make a car like this again? This car is over 20 years old and we've had numerous technology advancements since. It's all crap if they have to resort to funky hybrids that barely match the numbers of the VX. Sorry, but there is no excuse. Recently, car makers have started releasing small cars that get MPG in the low 40's, which is still a joke. Incidentally, the 1994/95 VX was rated in the top 5 most gas efficient cars of all time. It actually has been mentioned in recent articles where the author complained that some of today's hybrids can't even match the mid-90's VX.

This video is the reason I bought a manual Honda Fit. It doesn't make sense how those are related until you drive a Fit (3rd gen).

Manual steering is best steering. Hot in summer open window manually and drive faster.

Those alloys were actually standard for the VX. They were used because they were lighter than the standard steelies. Therefore; better mileage. It was also one notch ABOVE base. It had 22 more hp than the base "CX" model, as well as an 8k tach with a 6k redline, plastic bits on the underside to improve the aerodynamics, aluminum alternator bracket, aluminum driver-side engine mount, as well as a lightweight crank pulley. But both the CX and VX had an interesting feature which was a little shift light that told you when to shift for the best gas mileage.

I wish I could have a hatchback in a manual as my daily. Everyone I tell that to doesn't understand. They think bigger trucks and SUVs are better. Which, yeah, you have good crash protection and ground clearance, maybe even comfort. But a hatchback doesn't have to be uncomfortable. And they aren't meant for off road. And if everyone would put their eyes on the road instead of their phone, well, the roads would be safer.

Dear Mr Regular, My friend bought this very car (well, the 75hp EX model, because EUROPE) last year. I now drive it everyday to work, because my 140hp Volvo C30 is being repaired. You brougth a tear to my eye, because you're right in every point about this car. It's fun, it's light, it's bare bones and is a pleasure to daily drive. I love you.

I can say you definitely pointed out all the reasons I only really buy late 80s early 90s Japanese cars. They just feel like the perfect cars to me and I don't need or want all the extra stuff that comes on newer cars. I like old American stuff as well but after owning one I got my fix.

Why CAN'T they make a car like this again? Why CAN'T they take a risk and put a woefully underpowered motor in a lighter car with all the safety requirements, but nothing else. Why CAN'T they sell a car with actual manual windows and mirrors? Why do we NEED the cheapest car to do 0-60 in 8 seconds, and seat 5? Why not put the money into the extremely efficient motor with a very generous gearing and diff ratio. Why CAN'T we have a regular NA motor deliver 70mpg? Answer? Because the American consumer cares more about dual zone HVAC and how big the LCD screen in the gauge cluster is, and how many ways the passenger seat is power adjustable, and if it's got a WiFi hotspot so all their 4 year old's digital devices will connect so they will shut the hell up on the 40 minutes it takes to drive them to daycare in the morning. And, yeah... the answer is always Miata.

I’ve been seeing this channel pop up for months without actually visiting it. Boy am I glad I did. Everything you said about how simple this car is, but it’s yours, you own it and the memories you make with it are unique. This is EXACTLY why I’m a car guy. More specifically an OLD car guy. Everything now is engineered to boring perfection. You don’t get that thrill of working out a dodgy repair on the side of the road with your mini tool box you keep in the boot anymore.

An unmodified old Civic (or crx) is much more interesting than a modded one. Somehow there is more passion in its raw simplicity than in bodykits and exhausts.

Lot of incorrect info here, but happy you did a video on the VX! First, the VX was NOT the base model EH2 hatch, the CX was. Actually depending on where you lived in the US it was either the second most expensive (to the si hatch) or the most expensive usually coming in around 11,500-13,500k originally depending on if you had A/C or not which was an option as well as rear speakers, with the si coming in between 12,500-13,800 depending on if you opted for abs or not and rear speakers. Now some VX corrections: 1.Those wheels are specific to the VX and are 13” lightest honda wheels ever made. In fact they grew an inch for the HF civic coupe in the next generation but design was the same. They didn’t use steel wheels because or rotational mass reduction with an alloy to help achieve that amazing mpg. 2. They get far better mpg than the 48-55 if you know how to drive it, and that’s without hypermiling. Mine would notoriously get 58-62 if kept in lean burn. 3. There is a shift light that uses vacuum to help you determine when to maximize your mpg. The engine was designed with lean burn and enriched burn technology. Under 2400/2500 rpms you are in lean burn, above you are in enriched burn with VTEC kicking in higher in the rpm band. 4. This is the second slowest eg/eh2 hatch, the pecking order is as follows for the hatches in terms of speed castes to slowest. Si, DX, VX, CX 5. This is one of the rarest civics ever made and the lightest eh hatch out of the batch so finding a clean one is like winning the lottery. Most were the choice for swappers because they were the lightest 6. They were super safe, and still are today. I hit a tree head on at 60mph (thanks minivan mom on her cell phone running me off road) rolled 2 times once rams landed upside down in a creek and my 24 year old airbags still deployed! (94-95 hatches all had passenger airbags standard). I walked away with a bloody nose that’s it. These things were built tough for a little hatch, I would argue safer than any new little car.

Sums up 90's Hondas perfectly. If you have never experienced a 90's Civic/integra then you must do yourself a favor and try it. Not fast at all, but might be the most fun you will have in a car with under 150hp. I recommend a Civic SI, Del Sol with the B16, or the integra GSR!

DOUBLE CRASHU INTENSIFIES

In 1996, I was 25 y.o. and bought a 6th Gen Civic DX hatchback brand new. My purchase was based on my needs at the time: fuel efficiency and cost. My '96 hatchback was red, 5 speed manual, no power windows, no a/c... just as bare bones as this '95 video. Such great memories. I sold it in '15 and it's in good hands. LMAO classic car. How time flies. I'm rocking a late '91 EG ESI hatch with an sohc D16. My family bought it way before I got my license. I picked it as a kid because I liked how it looked and sounded. Best random decision I've made in my life. This one is black and has power steering too so it's a perfectly fine daily driver. Now that I think about it, these hatches are starting to rust into the ground and disappear from the roads. A few years and a nice one will be quite a head turner to anyone who knows about cars.

I've not seen that many of your videos since I subscribed, but I can safely say this is my favorite because of that segment about memories. I have a 96 Ford Ranger that's been in my possession for over 20 years and for the last year it's remained idle because I can't really afford to run it anymore and have contemplated getting rid of it. But I know that the day that happens I'm gonna bawl like a baby because of all the memories I have with that truck. I feel so sorry for kids today because they're never going to experience things like we did growing up and how 25 years ago things were so much simpler. Thank you for this video Mr. Regular! i had one just like this same year and model. 95 vx manual. i was the second owner and it was 100% mint on the inside. I spent weeks detailing it and also spent a chunk on a better than oem quality ppg paint job. it was the cleanest and sickest 92-95 hatch ive seen to this day. that little vtec-e that could was an epic reliable engine withe really good mpg. all i had on mine was a nice k&n intake, neuspeed springs and some good struts. stock everything else well besides a pioneer premier head unit and 2 rockford tens. was my teenage dream car and in high school it was a magnet for everything.. litttteraly. tickets, women, friends, racing, shit talking, haters, lovers, you name it.

Damn I miss the 90s. There's so much that made them great. Even as a kid in Germany. We just came out of the cold war. People were positive and looking towards a bright future. Even environmental policies felt like they were doing something good (the choking smog from the cities was finally gone). Love parade. Technology was exciting - the internet, PCs doubled all of their specs every year, we witnessed the jump from the NES to the Playstation, 3d Graphics. Motorsport was cool - I still remember being excited about F1 (Schumacher vs Hakkinen) and even more so for Rally Sport (the era of Colin McRae and Richard Burns). That also brought the speed ware among bikes. The McLaren F1 inspired so many of us and still looks current today. There was a nuance between electronic and mechanical implementations in everything. The nanny state wasn't as bad yet. Retirement was not a worry yet. People seemed more reliable when it came to meeting up because we had no mobile phones. We didn't fully entrust our lives to computers yet. Street signs still pointed at real destinations as GPS wasn't a thing yet. There wasn't that crazy fear of the outside yet. When my grandad gave me a pocket knife as a present at the age of 8 - that was considered normal. Cartoons as a kid was only really watchable on weekend mornings and briefly in the evenings. The fear of terrorism wasn't a thing. No annoying software updates every couple of days. I wonder how long before you have to hook up your washing machine to your Wifi network and wait one hour to download and install a firmware upgrade! It felt like politicians still had some form of moral code. I.e. Clinton / Lewinsky. He apologised in a speech, vs Captaim: grab em by the pxxxy. I'm too young to remember if Bro culture was such a thing yet, though it feels like it's gotten worse. I could ramble on and on. The main thing is, it felt like we were happier. National geographic made a whole documentary about the 90s - the last great decade.

I miss road map books. There was something fulfilling about looking in that appendix, finding the street you need AND in the correct suburb, finding the page and coordinates and using this knowledge to find out where you're going.

I don't know what it's like trying to make a living from this, maybe one video a week is what it takes minimum, but I don't think anyone would mind if you cut back a little to make time for yourself. I hope you can take the time to invest in yourself and enjoy what you're doing as well.

My friend bought a 92 VX and it has air con!!! It amazed me to see an AC compressor but have no power steering. Previous owner installed new suspension in the rear (with nice gold control arms and new trailing arm bushings), new clutch, dual core aluminum rad, and a red mugen valve cover. Made me come back to this video to remember some of the minute details like the two piece hatch.

Shit, that speech hit me hard and made me feel so nostalgic even though I was born in 95 I still had similar experiences when going on holidays with my family, with all our stuff crammed into a 99 2 door red Nissan Micra. We'd have to ask for REAL people for directions, yeah kids REAL PEOPLE. Now it's all gone.

Bought my first car recently, its a '96 Civic Fastback with a mere 1.4l engine. I love every bit of it, especially when I drive the back roads and let it come to life, revving >7.000 RPM. Hondas were, and are, something special. I still can't wrap my head around the concept that the cars I saw in my childhood will soon be classics. I'm not even that old.
