I was not surprised when I heard about this. It was obvious that the isolation and basically no freedom and probably very strict biblical lifestyle pushed the kid to basically insanity. Plus, the parents used them for slight fame and fortune with the band. I believe most people would break as soon as they realize what life is like outside the farm

I honestly don't blame him for killing his mother, it definitely wasn't the right thing to do but as you said the parents pushed their children to insanity, they treated them like they were machines made to obey, treaded them like property and not people. I would argue that the whole thing was child abuse, the parents didn't want children, they wanted something they could have power over

Oh yeah! It was SO obvious! There's another religious family nut case where I'm surprised I having heard of their child doing the same thig to them! They even admitted to brainwashing their children! Despite saying that he was religious, when I was watching that episode as an older kid or teen, I saw so much darkness around that family. Not literally but from how they talked and acted even down to how the parents looked, it was DARK! And SCARY! Even my parents made a comment about it! But for me, it was like I was watching Satan take hold of these people under the guise of religion. And that's how I view the family featured in this video. There was just a darkness looming all over them. It brought chills to me!

Its so bizarre to see the daughter from the "spoiled" family who's parents, admittedly, give them a bit too much leeway say something as poignant and responsible as "its ok to clean for cleaning's sake. You don't need to hand out little rewards and tokens for being clean."

Just goes to show that being kind to others really does pay off, they treat their kids very well from what it seems, to have a responsible mindset like that as a teenager but still be labeled spoiled, doesn't seem like it's doing them justice, because you can be frivolous and also be very appreciative of those things. If they took all of it for granted, they'd be spoiled, but they clearly don't, they seem like a very normal happy family to me
@wintermoon7003

Honestly what terrifies me the most with Jacob's situation is how much I'm able to empathise with why he did that to begin with. I was raised pretty isolated myself, while not to the point of working sun up from sun down I definitely never had enough socialisation with other people in my most formative years and that can severely damage your own mental health and ability to survive in the outside world, and coupled with not being able to leave and find a job for various reasons has definitely instilled some worrying levels of suicidal ideation even before the pandemic. I'm most scared of what would have happened had I been in a much more stricter environment like Jacob, made to be so afraid of the outside world and what would happen if I no longer had a way to take care of myself (because part of me even doubts Jacob would have even been allowed a job outside of the home let alone qualifications to even apply for one) if I would have done the exact same thing... It's awful he did this, but I can't help but empathise based on how easily I could have ended up like he did. My condolences to his surviving relatives as well, and I hope his mother doesn't rest in peace
@valqzx1144
@valqzx1144 Жыл бұрын
i would guess jacob really does have some underlying mental illness, and his circumstances worsened that. many of his surviving family members supported him through the trial actually, so im guessing they either sympathized with him based off the abuse, or suspected he was mentally ill.

I hope you're still doing well. I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I was very "sheltered" growing up, not allowed to go to friends houses or have them over... Alone all the time. Because if my father I stopped getting invited to birthday parties after the only one I got to go to in first grade when he called the house drunkenly through the night giving the third degree about my behaviour. (my first and only sleepover). Those parents told all the rest and even through high school the reputation stuck and I wasn't ever invited to anything. It makes for too much time alone wondering what's wrong with you and not learning at all how to socialize.

If that's true then an insanity plea would be absolutely insane not to hold a considerable amount of justification, otherwise the court would be confirming the legitimacy of a specific religion over all the others in a country built on secular values with a strong emphasis on separation of church and state which is an increasingly attacked barrier from multiple groups whom hold considerable amount of political power in ways that range from covertly to blatant outright calls to allow for Bibles and Group Led prayer in public schools. Though funny how much offense these same people will take if you were to accept those terms under the condition that they allow for Islamic, or Judaism, or Hinduism, or Buddhism and would decry indoctrination without even a single hint of self awareness. But I suppose hypocrisy shouldn't be a surprise at this point from the religious fundamentalists, and should be expected like clockwork.
@1faithchick7

@RAAMstein All religion, as long as it isn't insane stuff like killing animals, should be allowed in school. I would be cool with a philosophy and religion course. Otherwise, no one religion should be pushed. But the kids should be allowed to practice as long as it isn't interrupting actual class.

Its pretty telling that the kids of the stockdale fam had it HARD when laurie asked one of them what would they do or like to do if they didnt work nor had schedule like that idea alone is foreign to them and didnt have the capacity to come up with any ideas because of the isolation. with how much they work you can probably take it away and they'll still do it, just on auto pilot, to the audience its over the top but as a parent especially from laurie pov thats how you start raising free slaves or vegetables.

I feel like either mrballen or Bailey Sarian did a story on this at some point lol bc I'm pretty sure I didn't see this episode back in the day (I didn't watch like every episode, just some here and there bc my sister watched tlc-type shows all the time) but the whole thing feels very familiar.

I feel his motives were fairly clear: he was that tired of his life and held so much anger and rage towards his mom and brother that he wanted them dead and after having killed them, most likely didn't want to live with the consequences so he tried to end himself, it makes sense although it's not the correct actions to take

Why would you even act like their home life wasn't a direct cause of this? Those kids were abused and kept under a rock. It's sad his brother caught a stray, but that woman had to go.

My mom and dad are like in between those two families. I have a set amount of chores everyday. And at the end of the week I make some money. But there is only like an hour worth of chores everyday so I still have a lot of free time.

You earn an allowance by doing chores. That's VERY common. I guarantee your experience was NOTHING like theirs. Ordinary household chores are a joke compared to the hard labor of running a functioning farm, even moreso if raising livestock. Plus theirs was fully organic which is way harder because they don't have the benefit of shortcuts provided by synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, etc.

also consider the fact that these children are abused either this is the result or he got tired of it
