On June 6, 1944, over 160,000 allied troops landed on Normandy in what was the largest amphibious invasion of all time. D-Day, as it later became known, marked the turning point of World War II. But, the 6th of June marked the turnaround of another, sometimes forgotten war. Sgt. Todd Hunter explains.

I had the Honor & Privilege of meeting many of the survivors of this battle, as a young boy. My Grandfather was Commander of the Veterans of World War I for New York State. He gave me the chance to shake hands with, and to listen to the stories of battle from these men- first hand. Sadly, they are all now gone. In 1982, my Grandmother watched me graduate from Parris Island; and lived long enough to see me become a Segeant of Marines. She told me my grandfather would have been very proud of me.

Had the honor of watching my son parade as a Marine back in 2001. His unit was at basic training when 9/11 occurred. Semper Fidelis Marines!

My parents moved to Château-Thierry a decade ago, they can see the Belleau Wood monument on Hill 240 from the garden, it's roughly just 1km away. They once found several WWI guns and light artillery rounds while gardening.

Do not get me wrong but I respect the hell out of the Marines, I am just a huge history buff. 1: The Germans were in full chaos in 1918 it was only a matter of time until they surrendered. 2: They were defeated many times, that is why the war went on for so long. 3: Paris was not a stones throw away. But anyway, keep killing it you Devil Dogs ( A US Navy sailor)

I am sort of (but not really) surprised that this Marine Sargeant Hunter would read this script without first checking the facts....Americans IN GENERAL are pretty lax when it comes to history, when it is not there own, and even then only if it suits them. This video is proof of that...Thanks again...

Today is Veterans Day. My Grandfather was in the United States Marine Corps (2nd Division) in The First World War and fought in the Battle of Belleau Wood in 1918. He was seriously wounded in battle (shot in the head by German rifle fire) and miraculously survived. He told me many stories about his time in the Marines, in Europe and at Belleau Wood and one story in particular where he saved the life of his commanding officer, Colonel Catlin (Albertus W. Catlin). Grandpa told me that Col. Catlin had become trapped on the ground out in the open between the trench my Grandpa was in and German rifle fire. Grandpa said he crawled out into the open and up to Col. Catlin and dragged him by the scruff of his clothing back into the trench, saving his life. Grandpa never saw Col. Catlin again after Belleau Wood, but he was aware that Col. Catlin had been promoted to Brigadier General.

my great uncle leo was a marine in WWI. He was at Belleau Wood too but survived to come home to his family. my mother said he would only share his experiences at family gatherings with her older male relatives. They would only then share war stories with my mother, uncle, and their cousins. I am grateful for his service to our nation and I am grateful for your grandfather's service too. Its because of guys like them that we still have our basic rights and freedoms. I can tell you are as proud of your grandfather as I am of my own family's service.

steph myers Thank you very much for the reply and your kind words! Your great-uncle Leo might have served along side my grandfather (Cpl. George C. Doneworth) at Belleau Wood. Grandpa was born and raised in Harrison, Ohio and joined the Marines in 1917. Even though he lost his right eye when he was wounded at Belleau Wood, he fully recovered, returned home, married and went on to lead a very productive life in the Greater Cincinnati Area, living until the age of 88. Despite being haunted by images of the war in his younger years when my mother was young, in his later years he would tell my little brother and I "war stories" about the Marine Corps, Europe, France and Belleau Wood. My little brother was so inspired by these stories that he told my grandfather, "I'm gonna be a Marine just like you!" My brother did indeed join the Marine Corps, did his boot camp at Parris Island and went on to become a commissioned officer in the U.S. military. I also want to say that I am grateful for your great-uncle's service with the United States Marine Corps and the sacrifices he made in the defense of the United States and our Allies. My mom is still living and she, along with my brother, were invited to attend Family Day (May 10, 2014) at the National Museum of the Marine Corps near Quantico, VA. The occasion was for all families of World War I Marine Corps veterans and they got to tour the large Belleau Wood exhibit that has been constructed there. Sorry this has been so lengthy!

@norseman7088 The French had already held and counter attacked between the Marne and Aisne and retook ground just 10 miles to the north of Belleau Wood as well as other places. This broke the back of the German offensive, not a small 3 week battle by the US after the Germans were already exhausted and over extended and stopped

@norseman7088 Vimy Ridge in April 1917 saw a compilation of everything that the Germans, British and French were doing right and brought together for a victory. To just name a few things, all privates were given maps and briefed on their own as well as their neighbouring platoons objectives so they could assist them if the opportunity arose or continue to function if their officers were killed. They even rehearsed the battle on similar ground.

@Dogmeat1950 An army unit took over for a while in the wood to give the marines a break and likewise small German units relieved and reinforced those in the Wood. On the scale of what was happening at the time Belleau Wood was a small battle with small numbers of troops involved. During the battle of Battle Wood 23 German divisions attacked toward Paris from the North East and was beat back by 20 French divisions within a week.

@ascoop22 The British the French the Canadian the Australian the Americans and many other countries fought by each other as brothers and they died on the battlefeild as brothers, no one is taking that away from you all the dead including the german's who died in battle maybe not quickly and all that soundly nor was it blessedly died and the dead deserve the respect. All soilders of war are guilty men no matter how just the cause is killing a man is a morally trieing pain each soilder will have..

@Dogmeat1950 I said you have never read anything about it and your cut and paste reply confirms it. The Third Army did not retreat but made withdrawls of some units that held their ground. The British did not retreat in June. The German Army came within 40 miles of Paris in June after attacking the French not in March or April after twice attacking the British sector.

@jhnb12876 Also, the Germans called the Americans savages. And the French were flabbergasted by the Marines accurate long range rifle fire even while under fire themselves. And the Marines stayed motivated and continued to carry the attack even in small units and without officers. The men were also well briefed right down to the lowly private, which allowed flexibility in a military world known for it's rigidity at the time. Not only did the modern USMC emerge, but modern combat too.

@Dogmeat1950 You fail. The US did not go on the offensive, it was at Belleau Wood that a small number of troops counter attacked to expel the Germans that were there. Hardly enough to be called an offensive. The British and French were not in retreat in June and both always carried out counter attacks and regained ground at many locations during April, May, June, July 1918 not to mention their major offensives from July to the end of the war.

@Dogmeat1950 Ummm but, history has been recorded that the British and French did indeed deal with the thousands of German troops coming from the Eastern front now didn't they? The British with 50 divisions engaged stopped 2 German offensives of 100 divisions engaged. The Germans shot their load and lost. They had lost many men and were pushed back before the US started their main battle at the Argonne end of September.

@norseman7088 Parts of 2 US divisions happened to take part in helping to stop the 3rd offense, if those 2 divisions were not there 2 more would have taken their place with the same result. If you know anything about this period you would understand that the Germans were in fact already stopped by the French to the left and right of where the Americans were.

I'm sorry don't you mean the final advance? After all the Germans made three earlier assaults that were stopped between March and May 1918, Belleau Wood was in June. Nobody is denying the courage and sacrifice of US troops in WW1, or their contribution to defeat the Germans, but hey a lot of British, dominion (Australian, Canadian, and New Zealand) and French troops also died stopping the German spring offensive.

I assume the French have units that wear the kepi besides the Legion. I say that because a quick frame revealed a female wearing the kepi and I know the Legion does not yet have women. I missed whether this is a gathering that occurs every year on that date (6/6). I also missed where the WWI cemetery was. Was it for all US soldiers or just for Marines?

i can still remember that marine face who belted me with the butt of his rifle on board ship during nuke drill. I wasn't even on the wrong side of the tape just stuck my head out of a hatch i went down and I took his rifle with me. his sergeant rushed over to me looked down and asked you ok ? I said I think so and then he asked me if he could have the rifle i was clutching with both hands so I gave it to him and he gave it back to the private not so nicely while chewing his ass yelling you are suppose to say halt before you hit somebody. and not lose your piece or something like that chewed that private out good.

@Dogmeat1950 Secondly, only elements of the 2 US divisions and elements of 3 German divisions were involved. Some unreliable sources like Wiki say elements of 5 divisions but book sources say elements of 3 German divisions. That means parts of, not the whole division. There was only 1 German regiment holding the Wood and a few nearby villages when the Marines first attacked the wood with 2 battalions. Not 2 divisions. Do you understand?

@norseman7088 Also, sentries were left behind to protect the backs of the infantry as they advanced. Have you read what happened at Belleau Wood when the Marines thought they were passing the bodies of dead Germans? Reckless aggressiveness and suicidal frontal rushes at machineguns is not a better option than experience and tactical soundness. There was no military rigidity in WW1 after mid 1916.

@norseman7088 The American help was slight in helping to stop the 3rd and 5th German offensives, so much so that without them the results would have been the same. This should be no disgrace to the US military no more than the help the British Fleet gave to the US at the end of the Pacific war against Okinawa and Japan home islands or the help the French Army gave in WW2 in the allied advance to Germany.

@jhnb12876 I think you protest too much. Despite what had happened four years earlier by 1918 General Contra's offensive was on it's way to Paris. The French army was on the verge of collapse, and the US Army and USMC was thrust into the void. Not only did they hold, they counter attacked, which broke the back of the German offensive. We were fresh late comers, in a sea of tired soldiers on both sides. But that doesn't diminish our significance in this battle or the war.

@jhnb12876 But they are only partially inaccurate, instead of war they should have said offensive. Yes the Germans had made it to the Marne before, but this time the Allies were on the ropes staggering. Germany had been reinforced by their eastern corps, because their Lenin scheme worked. And if the Americans had not got involved in all likelyhood France would have fallen. The situation was very very dire.

@Dogmeat1950 General Ludendorff’s five great offensives launched during the spring and summer of 1918. (period) saw British units Retreat for 3 days. (period) and Germany Army came within 37 miles of Paris.. the British Third Army. (period) retreated. Yes cut and Paste. Excuse me, 37 miles. How Paris has grown since 1918.

@norseman7088 I doubt your statement about the privates being briefed and your comment about modern combat emerging at this battle is totally false. The Germans were flabbergasted that such naivety could still exist in 1918 before they opened fire when they first saw the Marines walking toward them through the wheat field. Modern combat emerged at Verdun and the months of the Somme and the tactics used then are still used today

@norseman7088 I have to agree this video is totally false. Not only four years earlier but the Germans saw dozens and dozens of defeats at the hands of the allies on the small scale of Belleau Wood and larger. Earlier, two major offensives were stopped cold by the British. Contra’s offense was not on it’s way to Paris but was already stopped before the battle of Belleau Wood began. The French Army was not on the verge of collapse.

Really, the US Army arrived on the end of 1917 with the same spirit as the French army in 1914 at the beginning of the war. The US military has a vision of war outdated, a war that no longer exists. It will learn step by step (helped, equipped and trained by the French) the modern war, industrial, with enormous firepower, very lethal. But it will cost to US army (and US Marines Corps particulary) tens of thousands of soldiers killed during this time (for the French in 1914-1915, it cost to them hundreds of thousands of soldiers killed)... Actually, the modern US army was built in France in 1918, during the bloody battles in the end of the WW1.

You may have watched some war movies but I doubt you’ve read anything because you got all your facts wrong.. Firstly, if you’re trying to say 2 US divisions beat back 5 German divisions you should learn that US divisions had 28,000 to 34,000 men and German divisions had about 12,000 at that time so sides were about equal.

While I am incredibly proud of the the history and ethos of the U.S. Marine corps, to suggest that the U.S. Marines were the first force to stop German advances in WWI is terribly false and belittling of the unbelievable sacrifices made by the allied nations. We should learn from history, not attempt to influence modern perspectives with it.

The French saved themselves in WWI you tit. They accounted for nearly 70% of German combat deaths between 1914-18 and turned the tide of the war at 2nd Marne.
