I have a Remington 581 lefthanded. I would like to redo it. And I am having a devil of a time finding parts.

Any ideas on how to 'fix' an oversized action bolt hole in the OEM stock? Thnx

Adding a rear action screw is a no-brainer. I'm gonna do mine that way so I can pillar bed it and float the barrel.

I purchased the 581S new in the 1980s...mine was bedded with not floating the barrel...is there improved accuracy after you floated the barrel? Thanks.

I'm gonna put the 2nd action screw in mine .They talk about it on rimfire central.

Nice 2nd episode. I am trying to figure out why you bedded the barrel when others try so hard to "free float" theirs? Anyway, love your work. PS: Are you from the Maritimes? I"m from Nova Scotia, South Shore.

Hi Christian. First off, I'm from Saskatchewan. As for bedding the barrel the way I did, it was an experiment. Something I thought up because this rifle only has one stock screw. There is very little barrel harmonics in a .22. So, what I wanted to do, was take away any irregularities. In other words, make a perfect bed for the barrel to rest. And, I did. This gun shoots as good as any .22 lr rifle can. It is a pleasure to shoot and look at. Remember how old this gun is. Hopefully you have checked out my site and have watched the video I did about this gun and the Ruger 10/22. Thanks for the comments Christian.

@@kenhcurrie8196 I purchased my 581 S new in the 1980s. A gunsmith friend bedded it like yours, with no free-floating barrel. It does not shoot very well...at 25 yards I can not put every shot inside a quarter. I tried changing scopes, cleaning the barrel. Any suggestions?

@@RetrieverTrainingAlone Happy New Year. There isn’t a pressure point in the stock’s barrel channel. I mentioned in the video (I think) that there is only one action screw. That is why you can’t just free float the barrel the way you would a rifle with at least two action screws. I think there are people adding a second screw, you’ll have to check the internet.

@@kenhcurrie8196 Thanks. Mine was bedded in the original factory birch stock by a gunsmith friend of mine in the 1980s...I always wondered why he did not free float the barrel. Mine is not very accurate....at 25 yards I can not get every shot inside a quarter. Yet using the same setup I can shoot bughole groups at 100 yards with my .270 Win and handloads.

I understand it's a 22LR but still ... how big of an impact absence of a recoil lug has on this rifle?
@kenhcurrie81968 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching. How big is the impact - probably not a lot. But it all adds up. Either a recoil lug, or a pillar (bushing) could make a bit of a difference. This gun right now shoots 3/8" 5 shot groups at 50 yards. That puts it in the same league as a Cooper. The way I bedded this gun made a difference, I really believe that. I think there are still two ways to make smaller groups at 50 yards - I need a better trigger (or a trigger job) and I could measure the rims of the ammo (head-space). Am I going to do that, the answer is no. I have a Ruger 10/22 that will out shoot this gun and is way more fun to shoot. After all, they are just 22s. Thanks again for watching.
