My custom Rem 581 (Broughton barrel, Canjar trigger) is more accurate than my Ruger Clark custom 10-22 (Lothar Walther barrel, Clark trigger). With match Eley Tenex ammo at 50 yds, the Rem 581 shoots in the mid 0.2’s and the Ruger Clark shoots in the 0.4’s. My Anschutz 1710 is also more accurate than the Clark Ruger using either Eley or RWS ammo.

Never shot it and just recently got interested in doing so. Dang ammo and brass are non existent. Looks like it may be another 20 years before I shoot it. LOL

For my 581s and 10/22 with F A M ammo. I got tired of the flyers. So, I weighed 100 rounds. What I found was the light loads hit low and to the right, the heavy ones hit high and to the left. With the rounds that all weighed the SAME, the ones in the middle, 3 shots all holes touching, at 50yds from the bench. ALL 22 lr ammo is manufactured in bulk on machines thus the weight difference between rounds. For the light rounds I'll use as rat wreckers, the heavy ones for PSP, the ones in the middle that all weigh the same for competition.

The bullet/neck spindle casting bore is off from the spindle shank diameter. The bullet spindle is fine if you set the right tension between the spindles, The neck spindle, for me, needs a custom pilot to give good readings. I will see if I need a custom spindle made to prevent any movement.

Great video! I just started loading .223 for my 8th cartridge, using Lee single stage and power trim but deburring by hand for neater finish. Have tested my 55gr Hornady vmax over IMR 3031 with far better accuracy than factory winchester thats 4 times the cost even paying for price gouged small magnum rifle and powder. Dying for large rifle to load a bunch of 6.5CM. Have you gotten hand cramps from that small Lee press knob? I did and switched them out for a 9 and 8 ball, so much better on your palm!

I don't know about that. What he's shown us is that the old multi-lug rear locking Remington 581 action was made to lock up for accuracy and they put barrels on that with its preferred ammo will shoot a tiny cloverleaf at 50 yards. The newly manufactured 10/22 has every CNC advantage of today but did it really beat the old school hand fitted and assembled 581? Not by enough to write home about. I'm only hoping my 581 LH shoots like his, it's a rifle that was bought by the original owner more to look at and admire than be used and the rifling is perfect still. I highly recommend the Lyman Borescope for checking used gun barrels before buying.

@@kenhcurrie8196 right... there are a series of Philip’s head screws that hold the rib on. One of them holds the sight into the dove tail. The sight is in like a 1” track above the rib. You can unscrew the whole sight assembly and flip it in the dove tail. I’m asking, from holding the gun properly, does it run scope then sight then dove tail/screw or scope screw / dove tail then sight on the rear iron sight? The rear sight also should have a white triangle on it that normal would face the shooter. If you flip it to make room for a scope it faces the target. Thanks again for all the attention for a curious reply. It also makes me wonder if you bought it new. Mine was my first real rifle I ever bought as a young paratrooper in North Carolina. I have almost all of my favorite memories with this gun. I’m finally running low on my last ammo so I’m thinking of investing in reloading. Thanks for the care and the videos. Means a lot to me. 👍

I got my Remington 581 in 1979. It was my first rifle, and proudly I still own it. It loves the SK Standard plus ammo, but shoots nearly anything quite well. Since then I got two more 581's, and am currently on the hunt for a 582. They are amongst the most accurate .22's ever made, and their legacy speaks for itself. You did a fine job on your 581, and I watched all of the follow-up videos restoring the little rifle. The 541 series rifles are more of a fancy version, but still use the same basic action, and that includes the 541X, which is a supremely accurate target rifle.
