Rifle Description:
Remington 700 Short Action
Factory 26" Varmint Barrel
Timney 510 Trigger
Bell & Carlson Light Tactical Stock
Harris BRM-S 6-9" Bipod
Seekins Precision 20 MOA Scope Rail
Seekins Precision Low 30mm Rings
US Optics SN-3 3.2-17x44mm Scope (EREK and ERGO)
Eagle Industries Stock Pack
Custom 8541 Tactical Sling
This is a short video detailing three methods of bolt operation. These will apply to most standard bolt action rifles, not just the Remington 700. We also cover how to execute a chamber check.
Please excuse the wind noise, we are working on a better audio setup.
Watch to the end to see 1/4 speed, slow motion replays of each method.
As always, this is not "THE" way, just "A" way.

When I went through Army Sniper school back in 1991 after Desert Storm, they taught us the second technique and I use it to this day even after I have retired. . It is still fast but as pointed out in the vid, if done properly and SMOOTHLY, it will not disrupt your sight picture and once the bolt is slammed home and locked you will be ready to go with minimal or no need to reacquire the target. With practice, you can also use that time to take your full breath and release half to set up the shot

Love your instructions. I generally shy away from "Young Whippersnappers" when seeking instruction because they - just - don't - have - the - experience.... (Decades) I've also heard it said that there is an exception to every rule..... and you are that exception. Definitely gifted. There there is no shortage of people capable of performing at a very high level, but a very small number a people who can instruct and demonstrate. Keep it up!

Thanks for this video! The second technique really helped me at the range, especially because the rifle I was using has a slightly too long length of pull which makes it very uncomfortable to use the grip-it-and-rip-it method. My action is also very stiff, so the extra leverage from gripping the trigger guard really helped!

Shooting vintage bolt guns in comp is a goddamn artform, especially in the rapids. While in the sitting and prone, we usually rotate on the right site, pointing the muzzle in the lower right, never taking an elbow out of its original placement. Rotating the body right helps with the unlocking portion thats sometimes sticky. There's a way to grasp the cocking piece with your tumb and the bolt handle with the index and middle finger, that reduces on the movement of rifle

John, I know exactly what you are saying. If you are sitting there calmly in a relaxed setting you can feel it just fine. If you are shooting under any kind of stress it's easy to miss. Dirt and grit can easily change the way a bolt feels. Checking the chamber is the professional way to do it and if you don't do it ALL the time, you will forget when it matters most. These are lessons I have learned the hard way. You get to choose how you want to do it.

Ten-round magazines help in this regard, too. The best of the best were the men the British Army took to France in 1914, but they were mostly gone by the end of that year. The standard of British musketry for the next couple of years at least was substantially less - IIRC one officer in 1917 said the English bowmen of Crecy could have shot more effectively and to greater range than some of his riflemen.

A hollow-point also moves the center of mass rearward in the projectile, which improves stability (predictable precession and less spin drift) for long-range. Great example is the Hornady AMax projectile, combined with ballistic tip for maintaining a high ballistic coefficient. Nice video. You happy with the US Optics scope? Which reticle did you choose? I've been considering an ST-10 TPAL for a .308 GAP Crusader with the MIL GAP or MPR reticle.

2nd technique is called" Bolt flick" The Brits developed it for use on the American designed SMLE, which cocks on closing. It offers very little disturbance of position and sight picture. Its harder to do on bolt guns that cock on opening like the Rem M-700. Search KZfaq for John Olav Ågotnes to see how fast it can be done

So when you fire you really don't grip the stock with your right hand do you? It seems like your thumb is right behind the bolt lug, and the trigger finger is pulling back on the trigger but your other 3 fingers are not really doing much in the way of applying force to the stock.

Thanks for the barrel info. I got invited to a F-class style comp but all I have is my hunting rifle (270win Rem SPS, B&C stock, Lepld VX1 glass). I'd like to build up something I could use to get into tactical rifle comps. The Idea of moving and using field positions sounds like fun. One more quick question. Do ur SPS's have the x-mark trigger? If so do you like it compared to a tuned up old rem700 style? Thanks

Chamber checks are great, I also do a ignition check so when I put the keys in ignition I half pull it out to make sure it's in. Same with a disc check, I put a DVD in the DVD player & once it's closed I open it again but stop it half way to make sure it's in there. I even started card checking at the atm but I'm not sure that's gonna catch on. But seriously try it

Pardon me, sorry to bother but I was wondering what your opinion is of the .270 win cartridge? I've heard some claims that certain loads can be fairly similar to .308 in ballistics. A new Remington 700 in .270 fell into my lap as a good deal and I've been wanting to maybe take some precision rifle training with it but am unsure if it would work for that or be accepted at a school. Could you provide a little guidance please?

@TheOz91
@TheOz91 3 жыл бұрын
So far, this is the only reference I have about modern snipers using the third method (middle finger technique). I'm sure it's not officially taught in sniper school, but I'm also sure that many snipers practice this technique in case they need to get out of a jam if they're still using a bolt action rifle. I would love to know how many modern snipers have used or still practicing this technique. The third method may be unorthodox, but it dates back to the 40s with the British. In 1944, specifically, it became clear that early war CQB techniques with the Lee-Enfield rifle weren't that effective. Therefore, they developed (or rather, 1944 was the earliest date to have this method be described in an official document) a faster technique where the rifle is kept on the shoulder with the support arm/weak side keeping the rifle under control using the third method as you described. I don't know if you're still monitoring comments on this channel since this video is 10 years old.
@8541tactical
@8541tactical 3 жыл бұрын
The third method was not taught in school when I went through in the 90’s. It really isn’t the most useful in a Precision/multiple target engagement scenario. That is why you also don’t see it in PRS or NRL competition.
@TheOz91
@TheOz91 3 жыл бұрын
@@8541tactical okay, thanks! Still, do you think that it is useful in CQB or emergency situations? You did mention that some snipers have used this technique. If so, was it common? And the third technique can be applied to its full effect by some competitive shooters in 2 gun or 3 gun (mainly using milsurps). The well practiced guys with smoothen out actions can reach the middle of the table, beating pretty much a third to a half of semi-auto shooters. Yeah, not a precise technique, but the option is there. I won't be surprised if there are more shooters than we think who practice this (though there are many precision or long range shooting gurus call this technique "stupid.)

attractive weapon, very, what i did notice in the slow motion replays is ur trigger manipulation. i notice you lift your finger and hand back right before you pull the trigger, and its more of a jerking motion instead of easing the trigger. i myself have bigger hands and i rest my whole hand on the grip and shoot with the second portion on my index finger. most comfortable and get a better grouping. other than that, nice technique, heard of some marines using the middle finger technique haha
@GlockumOllie
@GlockumOllie 11 жыл бұрын
Left handers have an advantage if they shoot a right hand gun. The firing hand stays on the weapon and the grip is never released. While maintaining your grip of your firing hand use your right hand to cycle the bolt. You will find this to be a much better and faster way of shooting a boltgun as you never have to break position once to finish a string. I think a bolt handle should be on the left side of the gun for a right handed person. Try it and see if it doesn't work.
