Hi Holly, I grew up as a boat kid like you but in the 70’s in the Pacific. My Dad settled in Vanuatu and set up a boatyard and after independence I became a Citizen. Saw my first Pentecost jump when I was 13. All I dreamt of was my own boat to carry on sailing as you do. Jump forward 50 years after a career & family… Now I’ve been on my own 43’ sailboat for 8 years and am slowly following your track down the US east coast, Caribbean and currently Guatemala. Realizing my dream…. Just took a lot longer than you did to get there! Keep it up Holly!

Sailing with you vicariously is a great pleasure for me. Thirty seven years ago I sailed to Tonga, Fiji and New Zealand in a 27 foot yacht which I designed and built myself. I published a book about it. Now I am too old to do that again although always planned to do more but life got in the way. So Holly, you can imagine how your travels bring back the memories. You are on the greatest adventure of your life.

About 24 years ago I had the pleasure of traveling to Ratonga Cook Islands. When my girlfriend and I went to the locals bar at night it was interesting to see that the girls sat apart from the guys. Even when they danced the guys danced with guys and girls with girls. We were sitting with some girls from the island and I questioned "How do you get together". Well when the bar closes everyone meets up in the parking lot. Even though you are not filming from Raratonga it brings back memories ❤

Have you ever read James Michener's Hawaii ? It made me sad when, I think he was a leader on one of the un named islands and he took his family and slaves in search of a new place. 4 of the slaves knew they were parting to their death as they were going to be buried as corner posts for the new place of worship. Happy sailing and I agree with you about snorkeling in New Coral. I come home with no tan in the front but my back is all tanned.😊😊

Hey Holly, Vanuatu is a amazing place. Fun fact. When the tribal king dies, all of his wives are allowed to drink Karva ( the only time women can drink it) before they a buried alive with the king. The myth of the tree diving is a village woman was escaping her violent husband, climb to the top of a tall tree, tied vines around her feet, when her husband climbed up to get her, she grab him & jumped, killing him. The vines saved her.

Your underwater footage was absolutely stunning, loved the sped up segment of the black/white jobbies popping in and out of the coral. Sea snakes still scare the sh^t out of me though. 😂 About the land diving, I think you put it in a nutshell when you said “it’s brutal.” Tbh, having seen the very real danger of injury to the divers, I felt slightly guiltily voyeuristic sitting watching it, knowing that it’s now become a regular event put on as a means to attract and entertain visitors, when it was previously a single annual occurrence. I’m grateful that you were forthright about it and I’m guessing that it didn’t completely sit easy with you either? Thanks as ever for your vlogs, your travels have given me the opportunity to see so many places that I’d hoped to see first hand but missed out on. Stay safe and well. Cheers, R. 😎👍🍻

That's as REAL as it can get. The navies here definitely arrived from parts of Africa. Various movies from far back , things like King Kong ect. took advantage of this sort of construction for what they did and probably had locals build it all. I'm fairly certain many of the scenes were a product of what the producers were seeing here !

967 hP low will pass north of Vanuatu next Tuesday night QLD time. It will fill in it as it moves southwest away from Vanuatu. Port Vila may be a good place to hide out? Low is now forecast to head south see windy GFS model. Port Vila still safe. Check JTWC (US Navy Joint Typhoon Warning Center) for track and wind strengths when low gets more organized.

I vaguely remember watching a documentary approximately 40 years ago that talked about the land diving. Apparently a husband told his wife that be didn't need her. So, she climbed onto a high thing and called him over to see. She explained that she was going to jump because of what he said. He knew he would miss her and begged her to not do it. But she jumped head first toward the ground while the husband watched with sincere regret. Fortunately, she tied a vine to her feet and it stopped her just before she hit the ground. After that, the men in the tribe vowed to not inspire their wives to do that by instead making the same jump in memorial to their wives' value. Then, as the years went by the stunt became a way to show off their bravery. The one who made the highest jump got bragging rights and maybe a little more attention from his wife.
