tip: next time you are in a hardware store get some teflon fitters tape. It makes for perfect seals in threaded connections like on that pump. Maybe also get a sheet of gasket material while you are there anyway. (compliments for actually making a paper gasket yourself. ) You can also buy small tubes of gasket paste (DIRKO is a good brand) that is heat resistant and stays flexible. Whenever i need to fit a part using a paper gasket i smear both sides with a thin layer of DIRKO and presto, perfect seal. The stickiness of that gasket paste also helps locate it in place which is useful when fitting a part in a vertical plain. Sweet to see the boat back in the water after all that work.

@@cornishhh awful stuff! Old school plumbers hemp and a smear of graphite grease actually works so much better, it was a revelation when a grumpy old plumber persuaded me to try the "old" way. No more over tightening fittings trying to get that damn tape to seal.

@@petercroft9895 I worked in a factory where the production process involved pumping formic acid. We always used PTFE tape on any threaded joints and it seemed to work. It's cheap and convenient. I'll admit I've never used the old method though!

Everything about this is great. Your diagnostic skills, gasket bodging, tool improvisation, having supportive friends, etc. A wobble extension MIGHT have given you the clearance you needed, but probably not. When I saw you were hand sawing through hardened steel I cringed. But you made it. NICE.

Few things. Replace brass endcover screws with stainless steel ones. Locate a half-moon or banana spanner of correct size for that pesky bottom bolt. On the shaft seal in the pump itself, remove the spring in the water side seal and replace it with an o-ring as the spring will rust away causing the seal to stop sealing on the driveshaft due the pressure inside the main body of the pump.

Buy gasket paper for an emergency. Gasket paper is thicker than chart paper. You can place the gasket paper flat on the flange to be sealed and then using a small hammer gently tap around the edges to get the outline of what needs to be sealed on the paper. Be prepared. Be safe!

Hello Holly. I am Dorian, currently outfitting in Coos Bay, but hopefully heading south-by-southwest ... by next summer. I just wanted to say that I am so impressed at how you tackle problems. From the episodes featuring your dad, it is obvious how important GOOD parenting can make on a young adult, and how much better a position YOU are in - having had a mechanical and nautical Dad - then so many other women lacking the same. It is always refreshing to listen to your positive take on your adventures. I am glad you continue to make friends ... especially the ones kind enough to stop and assist you. May you continue to remain safe and dry. Do yourself a favor and take as few chances out there ...a as necessary. You seem to have been figuring this out by yourself! You don't need to film yourself hand petting Tiger Sharks to get more likes! Your life is interesting enough. : ) You are an inspiration. Peace, Dorian
