In this video I show you how I removed the intake manifold on a 2004 Toyota Rav4 2.4 4cyl so we could get a better look at a coolant leak. As always please refer to your shop manual for the proper instructions and repair procedure.

Had the same problem with a customer's 05 RAV a couple of years ago. The car had about 70,000 miles. For them it was time to buy a new car(a Subaru Outback). They offered me the RAV for what the dealer was giving them. The dealer didn't know about the leak. I declined and now after watching you I know I made the right decision!

Really a wonderful video, thanks! I thought I'd mention the Intake Manifolds on 2004 RAV4's (and maybe other years) are known to go bad internally with the result being a louder than usual engine at various RPM's. No squealing or anything like that, no check engine lights, no loss of performance. Over time, the engine starts sounding more like an old lawn mower than an automobile engine. It happens so gradually that you don't notice until it gets particularly bad at lower RPM's. A good way to diagnose is with a mechanic's stethoscope from the bottom. Another characteristic is the louder "rattle" will peak at about 1600 or 1700 RPM's then fade away again, but even that doesn't happen every start. As for that awful bolt nearest the battery, that will take the longest to remove and reinstall. I had to disconnect the hot lead from the battery and move the cabling back to have enough clearance for a socket wrench. This is something to be careful about because you don't want to short the positive lead to ground, otherwise you'll be making a special trip to the Toyota dealer for a new fuse block. To prevent this, disconnect both battery terminals temporarily. When reinstalling the intake bolt, I recommend duct taping it into position (small piece of tape) so when you go to tighten, all you have to do is push straight back with the socket. I failed to do this the first time and lost the bolt down in the engine compartment. That ended up being 30 minutes wasted trying to locate the bolt. Oh, by the way, I purchased an aftermarket Dorman intake manifold from Amazon for about $165 as I recall. No problems and the car is nice and quiet like new.

Here's a quick trick to help get the intake out without removing the fuel rail. Disconnect the motor mount bolt and use a strap from back of motor to front of frame and roll the engine forward an inch or so. Then pull out the intake.

If you ever do anymore. Pull the intake, exhaust with the head. As an assembly. It so much easier other then getting the knock sensor and harness bolts back in there from the rear.

I work on the service side of toyota. And those 2AZ-FE motors are notorious for oil consumption. I would recommend a rebuild if your gonna do that with the timing chain cover reseal. And yes the water pump sucks in those. After 60k you'll start to see coolant residue under the shaft... And after 90k oil leak on the timing chain cover, where the head meets the block. And about 120k is when the oil consumption starts. Sometimes 60k.... Good luck on the vehicle.

Pressure test and patience would have revealed that leak. The coolant has to go somewhere and even with other small external leaks the "diaper" would eventually reach saturation and become obvious. Under pressure in a cold engine a good thermal imager would catch it also. Not many places coolant could have been escaping in that scenario. Cooling system leak dye also. Just some thoughts... love your vids btw 😎

I remember seeing a trick where in this case where you just need that HAIR of clearance on FWD cars, you can rock the car front and back in park to rock the engine and trans front and back as the parking pawl hits the stop and tries to rotate the drivetrain as it's dragged or pushed by the rolling car. Put your hand or foot on the parking brake, rock the car back and forth really violently, and then when the engine had jerked and leaned far away from the area you need clearance in, slam that parking brake on to hold the chassis in place and therefore hold the drivetrain in place torqued away from your parts. 👍 It'll give ya that 1/2" you need, works even better on total piles that have torn every motor mount asunder and there's nothing but hope and dreams keeping the lump connected to the chassis. 😸😸😸

No, Doctor O, the wire mesh is to keep the squirrels and mice inside. The rodents are what makes the vehicle go. And I hope these head gasket jobs pay at least eight hours. I needed to remove the intake manifold on my 2009 CR-V and I discovered it had to come apart in two pieces to clear the radiator. Well, there are five bolts holding the inner plastic/nylon piece to the back of the metal intake. Once I figured that out by blindly feeling around in the back it came out easily. Assembly was a piece of cake even though I had to put it back together blindly. Once you know how it comes apart, putting it back together goes pretty darn quick.

You will need that insulator diaper thing. Well not right away but it keeps the heat off that plastic intake. After a while if it doesn't get put back on the intake will get heat soaked, bc brittle & crack. But it wouldn't happen for a while depending how often you drive it. Might last for ever or might end up cracking the intake in a few months.

Is there any issue with removing the foam "diaper" and not using it anymore? I had always thought it was bad to have that there as it seems it may be the cause of the bolts stripping. The foam insulates the aluminum block thus keeping the heat retained in it. Since the opposing side doesn't even have one, the heat dispersion is uneven. This perhaps causes the aluminum to fatigue thus making the bolts strip. I have a 2009 camry with this motor, and from what I've read, they "fixed" this problem by making the headbolts 10mm longer. Not really a fix in my opinion....

I am trying to make some room to remove the timing chain tensioner without removing the intake manifold but the wiring harness is on the way. On 21:00, that plastic part attached to a metal bracket on the right side that's holding the wiring harness, is that on their with a fastener or does is just slide on and off of that bracket? Trying to determine if I can simply pry it off of the bracket or not. Thanks!

Hint hint, insulator keeps heat off of the plastic intake but as you see creates a lot of other problems.

@2:03 those pliers you used, if you grind off the tips of them they make great plastic clip removers.

What's that pliers with the circular bit on the end ? Never seen that before. You need to get treated for post traumatic stress after the head on with that contrary manifold.A mechanic's life aint easy and auto designers make sure of that.Good reality video right at the coal face with no fancy gimmicks.

Lol yep that's just a brief moment in the life of a mechanic. It gets much worse let me tell ya. Those pliers are hose removal pliers. Watch the beginning of this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/apmanLifxtDVlJc.html&feature=iv&src_vid=pm9cJ0O4Sxk&annotation_id=annotation_1612204771 I feature them because other people were asking about them too.

The 2AZ-FE engine, was Toyota's Windows Vista. A motor built in Kentucky, but having the similar planned obsolescence of Detroit built Sedans. Non mechanics should stay away from 02-06 , 2az-fe !?! Peace.
