A lot of people complain about building codes, inspections, and permits (I often do), but doing demo on and old house proves that at least some of it is needed. The crazy way people just tacked stuff together back in the day is amazing (not in a good way).

In retirement, I will be moving into my in-laws place (still several years away). That house was built in the 90s and so there will not be some of the same issues as you have. Yet, I plan to change around the floor plan and so I am enjoying your videos. Thanks!

Old houses can certainly be interesting. Ours still has bits of old unused pipes and (knob and tube) wire here and there, remnants that were never fully removed when the house was upgraded. And the hall to the back of the house still has bits of hardware from a long-gone double door. And the stairs to the basement that were added, and then later blocked. And...

Only built in 1946, I thought it was at least a hundred years old, it's basically a new build, half my tools are older than your house, lol. The masking tape reminds me of the "structural" black electric tape and shrink wrap waterproof membrane found on renovation jobs. The crap people use for saving money, lack of knowledge and or scamming the client. Would you use any plywood sheet under the drywall to stiffen the basement stair ceiling boxing. A lot of European houses use plywood sheathing structurally to create a very strong rigid box. Looking forward to the next stage of work.

I married into a Hoppe family. It's German in origin of course and my husband's family pronounce it as Hop pea(Hoppe). I too get the urge to start one of the many projects we have on our plate at my house. Replumbing the recalled polybutylene water pipes is my number one concern.
