My engine had low compression so I ordered a low miles cylinder off ebay. The only problem was it turned out to be from a different model year and two of the bolt holes didn't align with my head. I decided to swap the sleeves.

Worked like ah charm on my 400ex. Oven temp 400 for 15 min. One hit with a rubber mallet and an old piece of wood came strait out! Thanks bud

Xl250. Nice. I did a 350. Same thing. I heated oven to 500 degrees. The aluminum just dropped off the sleeve after 5 minutes. Easy removal.

Was “cooking” an SL175 (twin) cylinder @ 300f after applying Gun-Kote, and the liners *slid* out. Pushed them back in with gloved hands.

Thank you for this video! You can use a gas grill for heat if you have one of those.

Don't do that bro.. the last step with cold and heat it is completely catastrophic. You can do it with very cold and a little cold but never heat. You can also do it with pressure or hit it

I did this with an XS400 twin. Used the liners from a square barrel engine as replacements for a round barrel model that had badly rusted and scored bores. Dropped them out an in again by heating in oven. I was very pleased with outcome. wife not so much as it stunk out the kitchen..

Thank you for the great video there is hope for the backyard guy after all. I have two CB550 heads with each one bad cylinder so I'm going to remove the bad out of one to get out of the other and put the good back in the one. Hope this works for me, wish me luck LOL!

can you use a copper earthing rod instead of rebar? should be hard enough to push out, but not so hard to damage cylinder +liner
@fromthebackyard241510 ай бұрын
That would probably be better than rebar. Rebar or wood is all I had and the wood split.

Have you ever done any Big Bores? Like a Skidoo, 440F (67.5mm x 61m) 436.7cc is a 377F (62mm x 61mm) 368.4cc Big Bore. I'm pretty sure it uses a (4) 8mm Bolt Pattern based on 94mm Bolt Circle. I figure you can go to 76mm Max, I would happy with 72mm to make a 503F (72mm x 61mm) 496.9cc. What I don't know is what clearance for the overbore of the Aluminum Shell for the New Sleeve is needed

After reassembling the engine it started up easily. I bought the bike non-running so that was pretty exciting. Compression was around 110psi before the cylinder swap and now it’s at 175.

Sir, thanks for d prompt feedback. (1)Pls what is name of this electric device u were using to swap d sleeve out from d cylinder, is it microwave or toaster oven? (2) At what temperature did u heat it? (3) did it need any adhesive to hold d new installed sleeve? (4) l hope during and after heating process d cylinder will not have any bad effect cos of d heating?
@fromthebackyard24156 жыл бұрын
It's an oven. Don't use a microwave. Heat to 350F (176C). Don't go higher than that and no damage will occur. Put the engine parts on a sheet or pan so the rack wont mar them. About 15 miniutes is fine. No adhesive is needed. The hot part expands and the cold part contracts so they can fit together. The engine started and ran find when I put it back in the bike.

Hey. On the cylinder you showed putting the sleeve in you did it very fast, no real planning for us to watch, I'm sure you can't just drop it in like that. There is ports to align is there reference marks on the sleeve and cylinder? Maybe a keyway it slides in on. I'm sure you don't have much time you align up ports before she locks in place ??? Thanks
@fromthebackyard24153 жыл бұрын
It just dropped in like that with no resistance. I would have liked to get a better slower shot of it happening but that’s literally how quick it was. There was no particular orientation to pay attention to.
@johnmeurer47803 жыл бұрын
This was a 4t engine no cylinder ports. Id say its Possible to align the 2t ports and quickly drop it in aligned by eye and hope for the best. The cylinder when being resleaved professionally, needs to be decked to match the height of the jug and the sleeve. Doing things this way can lead to a blown head gasket with water cooling you can get into trouble quickly
