The default highways and railroads have been removed to replace them with the very old country roads that connected Reddington to satellite towns and the outside world. Don't worry, we'll put highways back in, but not until after we work through the evolution of North American transportation as we go forward building Reddington up from its roots.
This city starts out fresh on the Green Plains map, which comes with the base version of Cities: Skylines. Rather than being a planned and platted city, Reddington begins with just a town square and branches out on this verdant peninsula from there!

Awesome Stuff! As great as this game is, it has always been really frustrating how the un-modified game makes you "unlock" rail and sea access deep into the development of a city, when in reality, cities were built *around* those modes of transit in their infancy. It was one of my favorite aspects of simcity 3000 that if you started in 1900, all you had was roads, rails, seaports, so you had no choice but to use those as the foundation for the city instead of Highways.
@lukejams

absolutely agree with you, even i am not very happy about the starting mechanism of this otherwise superb game. highways shouldn't be prebuilt on the map, we just need rail and build the interstate ourselves

@@lukejams yeah but not everyone wants to autistically plan out a city from 1850-2020 while basically writing a dissertation on it’s history, planning, culture, climate etc. most ppl just play the game and slap roads down wherever and however. They just want to build a city regardless of if it’s 100% realistic and historically accurate.

So true! Also, despite being made in Europe, it basically ignores a lot of characteristics of European cities -- like Mid rise neighborhoods, which differ very clearly from Low and High rise neighborhoods, and mixed use districts like in many European city centers. Basically, without mods there's no way to get anything somewhat realistic.

One specific little thing I do not like about the highways in this map: The rail goes over the highways on an overpass, exactly the opposite of how it works - the rails stay level, while the roads dip below or go over. Not just because the rails were there first, but also because cars are far better than trains at managing steeper grades!

I keep thinking to myself if this town being oriented the way it is wouldn't actually be more like Tennessee since the river flows north and the mountains are south...idk...I don't know how many canals they built across to Tennessee...I think the railroads came along and took over pretty quick.
@toneDef77
@toneDef77 3 жыл бұрын
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto that makes sense with Tennessee. I know there are several fairly prominent rivers that flow north through West Virginia and Kentucky before emptying into the Ohio River, so your rivers here in Reddington would have a similar flow heading towards the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. I also agree on railroad eventually taking over for the early canals that were built, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal came along slightly before railroads became predominant (1831-1924), but parallel railroad routes were built that ended up taking the bulk of that traffic (before highways came along.)

When you do add highways to the map, maybe you could limit them to either 2-lane-2-way highways or, at most, to pairs of 2-lane-1-way National Roads; in fact, both could be used, with the National Roads representing State Highways and the smaller 2-way highways representing County Roads. Unlike freeways, these two highways can be treated as expressways, with at-grade intersections with the surface streets (interchanges are not ruled out by any means; they are just more expensive to build, and as such, are less likely to be found outside of major cities with freeway connections). Most American towns lack freeway access, but nearly all have some degree of highway access.

I always find a little odd to have a massive highway system in some maps for no apparent reason. I know it's a game and you need some connectivity to start your city, but I love to play imagining that my city have an history and at some point started like a little settlement like this one and not just a random metropolis that just spawned in the middle of nowhere xD I'm looking forward to seeing how this town will look at the end. I compartmentalize alot. Which helped me get to the 100k+ population easy now. No problem. But now the compartments are failing due to the long distance and to many different accesses to the same highway. I'm thinking of doing 4 seperare highway roads instead of 2. And make one a truck only, and the other be passengers. Maybe split the needs and accesses up. Idk. Thats my next attempt at fixing my tornado alley scenario highway system.

Augusta, Ga still has canals throughout the old industrial district on the savannah river. For a lot of towns, I think it was easier to just develop industrial areas along an existing river instead of constructing canals (see Asheville, NC). Railroads probably came along early enough that most towns had not yet needed to branch out too far from the river.

I just love your ideas about city building in CS. I have been developing cities in similar manner for some time: traditional connections like rail and ferries, grid layouts, mostly self-sufficient local economies. Of course, a bunch of mods for enhanced realism. I suggest you take a look at creating CS maps from real-world heightmaps, you may find it interesting. It adds so much more realism, especially if you find yourself a good river valley or something like that and give it just a bit of editing in the map editor. Also, the usual heightmap websites built specifically for CS are not very useful, so for that kind of stuff I suggest using Tangram Heightmapper, because it has height data both for above and below water level. Anyway, thank you for great work, I'm really enjoying your playthroughs! Keep it up!

Yeah, that map looks like it has a California style freeway grid. 5-10 miles in any direction and you find a freeway, usually erring on the side of 5 miles with the grid modified by connecting harbors and inland destinations. For places prior to 1960 or so you see the "Trader's Trails" for the "Wells Fargo Wagon" that would come through every week to month with the catalog freight orders on it. The train made bigger items available with more frequent service.

Hi Lee: Great explanations of what you are doing in this series. Great help to me. I can't help wondering, however, why you did not build outside connection roads via the obvious mapmaker's tree line corridors? Also, coud you maybe go into more detail about how you figure out the grades of the roads? I get that following the contour lines result in a flat road, but can't follow how to move up/down grade lines to keep the grade small (the closer the contours, the steeper the slope if I remember correctly). Thanks for your vids. Keep on keeping on!

Make a herringbone pattern with the roads. Follow a slope into a dead end, due to steep slopes. Find some more favorable slopes partway back on the road that dead ended. Train tracks would have been the outside connections of choice before roads for vehicles were added into the area historically. If only there was an old steam locomotive station for the game and a mod to support how it actually worked way back when. Wagon trails, then barge/steamboat traffic on the rivers, then rails, then roads for vehicles would be the actual order of things. I wonder how hard it would be to incorporate that into the game?

One or two small fields, one barn, one small silo, and a single homestead? The processing sites and factories could be located in the industrial area of Reddington. The area could be famous for breeding Red Angus cattle, hence the name Reddington. Just my two cents! Keep up the great content!

I don't think you should be too concerned about terraforming to correct map faults. It's actually quite unusual to have geology that is characterized by rivers flowing through deep canyons where the cliffs don't match in height on each side of the river. Also, don't underestimate the amount of earth our ancestors would have moved to build a large infrastructure project. The Erie Canal is a perfect example of a large earthworks project built before the railroad age. I don't know of any similar examples in the South, but it wasn't for lack of manual labor. They had slaves to do any unskilled labor.

More barns and wearhouses will help gice you more trucks to export and take the long trip out of town and back. 1 house a barn and some detail will look like mini farms and could be cute

Is there anyway to change the 6 lane superslabs to rural 4 and 2 lane highways on a map before staring a new build?
@LeeHawkinsPhoto

I suppose so, but especially in the case with these old base game maps, the roads are routed in _the_ strangest ways and just defy realism…so I’ve never decided to do that. You may need mods to deal with them in the map editor.

Oohhh. I didn't know this was a historical city. I wonder if there are any good old old southern houses or u.s georgian/colonial townhouses on the workshop.

I was pretty surprised by the premise, but I love the result. Does anyone know if there are any maps like this in the Steam workshop or anything? This just looks so much more like a real place to me than the default setup of a tiny town off a major highway inexplicably criss-crossing an empty swathe of land.

I don't know if there are any such maps on the workshop (i guess there are some), but i've found out that using real-world heightmaps gives such a better look for a C:S city. Of course, they need some editing afterwards, but the results are gorgeous!

I'm wondering, do you plan on modernizing the city eventually? As time goes on, and as the city gets bigger do you plan on adding freeways, an airport, and modern power plants? Or are you going to keep it in a 1800s setting?

The city will go through time and will develop according to shifts in transportation technologies...so yes. I just wanted to start way back before railroads and cars changed everything.

since you are laying down the regional network, your city will be responsible for the maintenance cost of the new roads.

steam workshop dutch canals and lock mod pack work great

@blujitsu2180 3 жыл бұрын
There are some good canal lock assets out there, namely by Epic Lurker: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2381768586 While they’re prototypical of canals in the Netherlands, there’s no real difference for old American lock systems. They also have a great selection of accompanying road assets. Important note: they’re nonfunctional, though maybe you could fake it if you really tried.

the community would be near the bridge or the landing
@LeeHawkinsPhoto
@LeeHawkinsPhoto 2 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily...a lot of cities were founded way before bridges were ever built, and they didn’t always stay near the landing because it was on low ground which could have been inhospitable wetland (especially for farming) or just prone to flooding. Another big factor is the location of resources, such as arable land, and probably an even bigger one yet is defense, especially for much older cities. A lot of factors go into where a city pops up.
@woltews
@woltews 2 жыл бұрын
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto most of them are still fairly close to the landing on the nearest safe ground as people would have to unload boats and put the stuff from the boats onto wagons . Those people would want to live near their work as well as the people that would repair the boats and wagons . You would also pay more for items that had to be moved farther so people would go to where the boats were unloaded to get the lowest price and first pick of what was unloaded off the boat . An dont forget having water that didnt need a well dug .

@@woltews you're assuming that the river route is the only reason why this city exists ;-) there are other possibilities...
@woltews
@woltews 2 жыл бұрын
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto before you have mechanized transportation, it is very hard to move very much by road ( wagons are labour-intensive , slow, expensive and have low capacity as well unpaved roads are unusable for good portions of the year due to mud snow and security concerns ) You also have to haul water to your settlement of pump it ( where I live had no river or lake, and it took thousands of tones of coal per year to pump water to make the place livable and was not possible for more than a few thousand to live here before the railroad got here to move that coal )
