Suckers and water sprouts are common among fruit and nut trees. My Prairiefire crabapple has a few every year and since I didn't remove last year's crop, I have twice the number of suckers. Let me show you the right way to remove them so you don't compromise the well-being of your beautiful trees.
Hi there! My name is Heather and I garden in zone 5b in the southwest suburbs of Chicago on a small residential lot. My garden lives a whole lot larger than it is and I love sharing tips and tricks, as well as plenty of mistakes, with others who love to play in the dirt.
If you liked this video, please give it a thumbs up and if you'd like to see more garden content from a DIY gardener, click the bell to subscribe. That way, you'll never miss a post.
As always, thanks for your support and I'll see you in the garden!

It may help to remember that often trees are grafted to a hardier root stock that is not the tree you purchased. So if you have suckers coming up from the roots, they may actually be a different tree...usually less desirable than the one you're trying to grow. So it pays to keep them under control.

Thank you for this! We bought a house that has a seriously neglected crabapple and I feel much more confident about caring for it this weekend!

Just be sure your cutting tools are disinfected. 70% isopropyl alcohol is best but bleach wipes work too.

I have the same tree but mine doesn’t sprout suckers like that or water sprouts. Suckers/water sprouts are a sign of stress or trauma to the tree. My prairifire is a one stem though.

Honestly some of those Water Sprouts werent even that bad. They can be trained into actual branches similar to how Bonzai trees are shaped, its very easy. The inside of that tree is very thin so leaving those water sprouts which would turn into thick branches would have been my pick

Great information! We have a Linden tree and also 1 of our Birch trees that produce suckers right at the base of the trunk each year. Why do some trees do this while others don't?

That’s just their tendency, I guess, and another thing we can count on from year to year. Like the weeds! 😂

@@BLEACH500I always check if a rose is grown on its own roots or grafted for this reason. I still have some of each but it’s good to know.

It's about 10 years old and looked more like a tiny shrub when I planted it.

CAnt you just keep cutting the suckers down? Mine are too thick now, but if I keep cutting down maybe not too much resources will go to the sucker.
