This is Part 2 of the series and it's all action now. Having never done a job like this, we attempt to remove the rear clam of my Lotus Exige. This is the last we will see of the rear clam as it is (hopefully!) sold!
In the next episode we'll be removing the front clam, then we'll get to making new parts...

Everytime I see your Exige I get frustrated we don't get them here in the states. The attention to detail with all the unique touches is absolutely amazing. Excited to see the next iteration!

Looks like it's easy to do a bigger maintenance after the clam is off.

Great project! Am I alone in preferring the pre-face-lift rear clam? Love the four big round lights as opposed to 2.

It seems quite a few people prefer the 4 lights. I used to, but now I’ve spent quite a lot of time around 430 Cups, I now associate the 2 rear lights and facelift shape with the higher model. As I was painting anyway, it seemed a good opportunity to make the change!

@@GFWilliamsnet yeah I get you. Did you see that guy who with a Exige V6 who grafted half of a 3-11 rear clam to it? Looked epic.

Ahh, I recognise the face on the concrete lying with one arm outstretched trying to get the bolts undone position... It's one of the many "Lotus positions" :p

Very nice project as usual ! I was watching your Trip to Italy video, what headlight did you install ? Seems to be much better than the original headlight.

I changed the dipped beam bulb to LED. It’s actually something I want to change soon as it’s so rubbish, so I can’t recommend the ones I had!

Great video, how many man hours invested in the total rear clam removal would you estimate. Be nice knowing that with the front when you get to that. I also wouldn’t mind a copy of the documentation and will send you a email. TIA

Front and rear were both off in 6 hours. Will take an awful lot longer to put them back on I think…

That bolt is reminder of galvanic corrosion between carbon fiber and steel. You should try to make galvanic stop between those two. I am batling the same with carbon fiber bodypanels.

I haven’t seen any issues when using stainless bolts, so that’s what I’ll be going with when it’s rebuilt!

@@GFWilliamsnet what material it bolts to? Voltage difference is 1,1V between stainless and carbon. Works if there is coating between

I think if I was on my own, I would have got stuck at the electronics stage. Si did most of that but which is great, but it also means that he has to help put it back together as I now have no idea how that bit works…

Fibreglass is absolutely the best material for body panels iirc, it's much stronger than carbon fibre, it's not as brittle so it won't shatter or crack as easily and it's only ~30% heavier. Check out KyleEngineers' video on carbon fibre vs kevlar vs fibreglass. He's the guy who worked on Mercedes' F1 team as an aerodynamics engineer
@GFWilliamsnet
@GFWilliamsnet 2 жыл бұрын
@@vientayuno934 30% heavier often depends on how they lay it up. Was more of a weight saving than I expected with carbon, but the flip side of that is that the car wasn’t exactly heavy in the first place!
