Hi, welcome to my channel! My name is Vasil, and I am restoring my 1974 Columbia 45 sailboat. In this episode I will be removing water from the Johnson 25 horsepower two stroke motor to my sailboat while it's moored in the bay. I was stuck between a rock and a hard place when mounting this motor to the boat. During the installation process, it spent about 30 minutes submerged underwater while being towed to the boat. Now it's time to remove the water from the cylinders and get it running again. This motor will end up being my primary motor for about a year.

I don't know if I've watched a video that's given me this much anxiety in a long time. Glad it worked out. If it was me, the engine, all the hardware, the skiff, and myself would probably be sitting on the bottom.

Hahaha! I can see where the anxiety would come from. This is not an ideal situation. Glad you enjoyed the video, and thank you for commenting Zajac!

Salt water is not good for any engines electrical system. Good to see you got it running should push that no worries. The smoke is normal for a two stroke outboard that particular model is 50-1 here in Australia I’ve had a few of them.

Salt water sure is not good for electronics! Thank you for the info on that engine, helps tremendously! I was thinking that I would have to mess around with the mixture to get it right. You saved me precious time that will now be used to take on other projects, much appreciated. I will keep it at 50:1. Cheers!

Do you think there could be water in the oil? Maybe changing the oil just to confirm? I don't know much about 2 stroke engines. Also, the smoke is white, isn't that water vapor?

Two stroke engines don't have oil like a four stroke would. The oil is mixed in with the gas and provides the cylinders with lubrication during the combustions cycle. So there actually no oil in the engine, besides gear oil in shafts. The smoke could absolutely be water baking off inside of the motor. It is too early for me to tell what the smoke is at this point. I'm going to run 50:1 gas-oil mixture for another 5 gallons. If the smoke persists after that, ill back off on the oil. This motor needs to run for a while, its been sitting for good amount of time, then dumped it in the water. This is the part where I tell you that I normally don't treat my engines with such abuse haha!
