Rick, I was an organic chemist in a past profession. I love your videos. This may have been addressed in a previous video, but have you ever mass spec'd yellowing? Is it only oxidation?
@ImmaculateComics
@ImmaculateComics 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jelly Fingers! I haven't done any MS on the material but mostly because I don't suspect I would see anything. that's because I would just be looking for a loss of hydrogens if it were just the electron impact MS. If I were spraying it with MeOH or something then *maybe*..... but remember paper is a polymer so that would just be a huge mess in the quadripole. NMR might reveal a little but its FTIR that reveals the most. The yellowing is mostly conjugation, so it's making C=C double bonds that give the color and a complementary loss in ductility of the paper itself.

More to come! I appreciate your kind words Patrica, and I have dozens of ideas. My home ozone chamber and home comic book washing machines are near the top of the list but its very difficult to store and ship them and I am not sure of the market size so I don't want to buy and build 1000 of them to only get stuck with 950 lol!!!! -Rick.

Another awesome video. I’ve tried everything to get water stains out. My wife was saying you need to have something holding the books upright. Can I ask what board you’re using and where can I get one?

Well I made that from a sheet of lucite and a heat gun. I basically just got the lucite hot and wrapped it around a piece of metal pipe. I people are interested I could probably make them to sell? If I get another laser cutter they will be a lot easier to fabricate!

was just wondering what water you prefer to use when removing water stains. I'm gonna start experimenting with RODI because the tds in RODI is lower than those in distilled water by a very marginal amount. Just wanted to know what you thought about it and if you think that one might result in more gloss/color loss than the other
@ImmaculateComics

Well I have reverse osmosis canisters so thats what I use. Although I suspect strongly that it has a minimal benefit over regular distilled water.

Wow, Steve really did a great job using your cleaning solution Rick! Night and day difference, especially with the back covers. I'm glad that you showed how to remove water stains. Do you suggest deionized water only or would distilled water suffice?
@ImmaculateComics

Distilled is probably fine. Deionized is just easier for me to get. everyone does do not as good of a job as he does with it. There are definitely different levels of expertise, as you’ve noticed! Really in love w/ your comic vids at this point- thank you again. Any recommendations on pressing square-bound books like this? Haven't tried yet, but the prevailing youtube method seems to be stacking slices of backing board next to the spine to match the height and prevent crushing. Is that your approach?

Very interesting. Just plain Deionized water is what you are using? Did the deionized water burn your finger? Is this a process you would have to repeat several times? Great videos! Have you ever successfully tried to remove paint marker from a silver age comic cover? Great videos! Keep it up.

Is wet cleaning considered resto or conservation?
@ImmaculateComics
@ImmaculateComics 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on how.you do it. If you only remove material it's just cleaning (subtractive restoration). If you add anything, even fluorescent dyes to make paper look whiter, then its additive restoration (green label)

Would this wet cleaning method be considered restoration by CGC? Does it leave any evidence where they could detect it and give it a restored label?
@ImmaculateComics
@ImmaculateComics 3 жыл бұрын
This is "subtractive" restoration so it only removes material from the comic book and does not add anything therefore is does not get a purple label.
