Confronting a crippling winter storm, calling impeachment witnesses, and administering a life saving vaccine are all important. But sometimes we all need a little "me" time.

LYRICS:
When an ice storm comes rolling in
And folks might soon be shivering
You could be in the office governing
Helping out your constituents
Or you could go down to Mexico
Sip a drink on the sunny shores
You sound good at your job on Twitter so
You could go down to Mexico
We're gathered here for an impeachment
The president's lacking innocence
So we owe it to all the citizens
To move forward with several witnesses
Next week is recess-
Or we could go down to Mexico
Sip a drink on their sunny shores
It's Valentine's weekend, don't you know?
Maybe I'll spend it down in Mexico
As a pandemic starts to rage
And we make a vaccine hooray!
Let's show our data to the FDA
We'll discuss it in a few weeks, okay?
Uh…for real?
There a test for determining
If the people you elect to lead
Are maybe not so great at governing:
Do people prefer this to your currency?
Then maybe go down to Mexico
Sip a drink on their sunny shores
When a nickel is worth less than Doge
Yeah, maybe go down to Mexico…

That's not even the issue. He was criticized because he went to Mexico while there was a power emergency in Texas due to the storms. His job is to represent Texas at the federal level, which has nothing to do with what was going on at the time. Had he been the mayor of Texas going to Mexico at that time, there would have been an issue. People need to learn how their government works. As for "colleagues from other states...working their butts off raising funds for relief efforts..." seriously? Again, that's not how the government works. Any fundraising was going to re-election coffers. They use taxpayer money for relief efforts and if the senate wasn't in session, then he could have been preparing or reviewing documents, which he can do in Mexico or even on the plane ride there. The optics aren't great, but if people understood how the system worked, they would see that it wasn't that big of a deal, either.

I'm no Ted Cruz fan but I think that story was a little over hyped, A dad travelled to Mexico to drop his daughters off for a holiday because it was miserable at home. I think there's bigger things wrong with Ted Cruz, the GOP or Both sides of politics than that.

It's generally not considered a Senator's job to keep the lights on; that's more of a local government thing. Don't libertarians usually prefer when U.S. Senators do less?

As a Texan, I don't have a problem with Cruz going to Mexico during the ice storm for a few reasons. 1) His trip had been planned for months. He wasn't doing it to escape. I wouldn't be upset with anyone for not cancelling a vacation because their neighbor's pipes burst. 2) He is a FEDERAL politician, not a STATE politician. He has absolutely nothing to do with setting state policy. Now if my representative in the state house had bailed, or if the governor had left, then I'd be upset.

Last time I checked, Cruz was a senator with an office in DC, not a governor in Texas or some such position that required him to actually be there. It's not like he closed down lakes under lockdown measures and then took his boat out onto one.
