It goes without saying that Ms. Fleming has an exquisite voice. However, I think she could have taken the tempo back in this rendition of Rejoice Greatly. The notes, and her pronunciation in the coleratura parts were not crystal clear because it was all going so fast and she has such a rich, heavy, warm and magnificent voice that she needs more space to get her extraordinary voice around the notes.

The technical aspects of Renee Fleming’s opera singing has always ... just really bothered me! Like she wants to sound soooo dark and “mezzo” that she pushes her voice up and out through her nasal cavity! It’s just a very harsh, ugly tone! And the accent and the rolled rrrrrrr’s are a bit over the top as well! Lol it’s like listening to Miss Piggy trying to sing opera! Also, her natural speaking voice is more in the “alto” range. I just wish she wouldn’t try so hard to produce that gritty, nasaled sound. I’ve heard some recent recordings of her doing contemporary music and I LOVED them!!! So much more natural, not forced.
@dragicaklomp98103 жыл бұрын
Agree about the tone that is not beautiful. But that was not in the beginning and height of her career. I thought she had a beautiful voice for Strauss and Mozart. Though IT was darker and thicker than most lyrical sopranos. I am not a native speaker, but is it true that she sounds idiosyncratic in English?
@janetflier61923 жыл бұрын
How can you find fault with this performance?? I think it is lovely!!!
@johnfox79852 жыл бұрын
@@dragicaklomp9810 Yes, her singing in English is often distorted by strange vowel production. But I feel the need to caveat this minor criticism by acknowledging her greatness as an artist, vocalist, and technician. Among the world's finest sopranos since the 90s.
@glibbergloop2 жыл бұрын
Acknowledging her mastery of many aspects of this tough song and singing in general, I agree and this is far from my favorite rendition. In addition to the tone being pressed a bit too hard into ultra dark (which I really think would have been beyond perfect if she could have moved her tongue down out of the way a bit), and her accent being a factor, she is also an example of one who is using vibrato as a crutch to cover intermittent off-pitches. I also acknowledge that she isn't super young in this performance and maybe lost some agility. Just saying that there are others out there who won't be adding this one to the playlist. She is obviously very talented.

You are so awfully ruthless person to say such words. We are all blessed for having such wonderful singers singing to us. We all should be thankful and appreciate them for what they are
@susiearviso30324 жыл бұрын
Why is it in opera? We used to sing it at my old Church during worship sometimes and danced around. I had no idea it was sung in opera. I cannot stand opera. The only opera I can stand is Italian male opera. At least that's romantic. I'm sorry but the forceful high notes are atrocious. Yuck

It's okay to not like opera. Or operatic singing. It's very technical and the voice is sometimes used as an intrument at the expense of what makes vocal music enjoyable. You should listen to soome Kathleen Ferrier though. You might like her better.
