We got a recliner couch for free from a family member because the handles were broken off with the wires exposed. Bought some new handles for $13 on Amazon and watched this super easy to follow video and now we have an awesome leather recliner that only cost us $13. Thank you so much DIY Dad!

I used vise grips and just clamped it down on the cable and left it. Worked great

The big problem I had was not attaching the cable 'S' ring to the mechanism first. I had a friction for bracke which should been placed AFTER the 'S' ring. We finally got it but it was much harder to do.

Could you maybe make a video on how to loosen up how tight the pulling mechanism is because my cable is still ok but its so tight i cant pull it and the handlepart is broken :(

I can figure out how to separate my 3 piece sectional to get to the center section to remove the cable where it is attached to the recliner by the handle. It's a Man Wau Polo recliner. There our headed rivets that slide into a angled slots on the front and rear of the 2 connected sections but I can't get the sections to slide to get them apary

If i have a pull without a spring, can i replace it with 1 with a spring? Or does it have to be the exact same?

Unfortunately, mine's got an O-shaped (hoop) ring at the end, not an "S" like in the video. And the problem is that the o-ring is slipping off the post it is looped around when I pull the handle to recline. The post resists, the plastic (post and assembly) bends or torques a little and the o-ring slides right off leaving the D-shaped handle loose and useless. ARRGh. Either there's gotta be a better way to secure the o-ring to the post or the reclining mechanism has become stiff such that it is resisting too much.

This video is great! Thanks for posting. My cable length is 32" as opposed to 36". I can only find 36" replacements online. Any suggestions where to get the correct size?

As long and your anchoring the end of the cable the additional few inches shouldn’t matter.

Can I install a d-ring pull to replace the side pull? It's in a travel trailer but there's hardly no room to get your hand in there to release the pull, so was thinking a d-ring would be easier access

This is a great video, but i am also looking for a video on how to remove the arm of my lazyboy recliner to expose the bracket I need to remove and replace with the new one. I don't think I could fit a screwdriver along the inner side of the chair to do that.

If you haven't repair the chair them floor mechanism has to be removed . The bolts on the side remove the arm of the chair to be able to remove the cable.

I was able to replace the cable and the handle. But when I pull the handle something is preventing the foot rest from lifting. If I pull slightly on the foot rest itself, then it opens, if I push on the back of the recliner a little, it also opens. But it doesn't open the way it used to before the handle broke. Any ideas what might be preventing it from working properly?

Thanks, DIY Dad!! My replacement cable is on order. You saved me from buying a new recliner! One question: I had to snap off the plastic bracket holding the cable: now half the bracket is still stuck in there. Any ideas on how to get that out?

You may be able to unbolt the frame of the recliner to separate the arms enough to get in there and remove the bracket. I believe the cables come with new brackets.

I can reach the bracket. just cannot squeeze it hard enough to get it out. It's made of a very hard plastic. ???maybe melt it out? freeze it to make it more brittle?

Mine is over 50 years old, bought by my mother for my father when I was 10. We've had to replace all the rivets with nuts and bolts, which we have to replace periodically, and the footrest doesn't extend all the way and the chair leans to one side, but I still love it. The cable is operated by a button. Most recently, I've been unable to push the button in. So now I can't push the button in or get the footrest to extend at all. I'd love some feedback on what to do about that. I love this old recliner, I don't care how it looks.

When you depress the button is it pushing or pulling a cable?

Yes it does. In all this time, I've never had trouble with the button, just losing bolts that we replaced. I know it's insane, but it was my Dad's and it's very comfortable. I'm just not using the button now. I'm leaving the footrest up, just push it back with my legs enough to get up. And then when I sit down I just back the footrest back and sit down and let it come back up again.

Im working on changing mine out but there is not enough space between the arm/ leg piece how to remove the old bracket and put the new one in. Have you ever seen this before?

I havn't, but check to see if the arm is removable. That may give you enough wiggle room.

I am having the same dang problem. On mine the arm is not removable and the cable is bolted to the arm.

Taking off the arm is usually not necessary and often requires dropping the mech. 99% of these are screwed in below the seat line. Get a long bit holder, select the appropriate bit put your knee into the cushion to push below the mount and remove. Same thing to install. I’ve literally installed 100s of various cables. I need part number #b BUT with a handle. Our handle broke and my kids threw it away. Can I substitute it with part #D? I’m not sure since part D uses a spring

Recline the chair and then flip it on it's side or completely upside down. There may be a cover on the underside that you'll have to remove. Make sure all the nuts and bolts are tight and havn't loosened. Apply a lithium grease lube to all moving parts. Make sure to remove any excess oil (don't want it to get on your carpet)

So I ordered the part you put in the description but the issue is they don't come with a new handle. I have my old handle but don't see how to attach it to the new cable. Any advice short of ordering a new set of cables with a handle? That's not the link you had in the description.

In the link in the description there are four different options to choose from depending on the type of cable you need. If you ordered through amazon I would suggest exchanging it for the correct one, they have an excellent exchange/return policy.

I doubt it’s a lubricant problem. Your probably hearing it open or close, which can be pretty loud if the owner just pulls the leaver and lets it open without slowing it down.

I follow your instructions but still not working mine it doesn’t push harder and not recline. The original cable has spring and new cable doesn’t have one is that the reason why? Please i need help so desperate 😫

The spring is just to return spring, it shouldn’t make a difference. Check on the lower the cable enters into the mechanism and see if there is an adjustment down there. Sometimes he’s also need minor lubrication, graphite works really well.
