I think you should try more shade tolerant grass species in your back yard. KBG has a lot of troubles in the shaded areas, especially if you give it enough traffic. I had the same case with shaded areas and I found the best solution Supina Bluegrass (Poa Supina). Extremely shade tolerant grass, and I don’t have to overseed anymore because it spreads really fast through stolons
@PestandLawnGinja

Thanks for the idea. I have planted mazama in the back and it’s the only species that’s lasted. I get less than 4 hours back there. Even the shade species struggle
@StanislavYatsenko

@@PestandLawnGinja yeah, mazama is amazing. But it’s kbg, shade tolerant kbg species is the marketing. Poa Supina and True Putt aren’t kbg, that’s another types of grass, they are relative to poa annua, but they are perennial grasses and have all poa advantages - extremely shade tolerant even with high traffic, wear tolerance and high high aggressive habits. Many golf greenkeepers use it

Hey man, fellow Utahn here in Saratoga Springs, I have a bunch of dead patches in the back im going to fix but i have a question about seeding: is it ok to seed and put a pre emergent at the same time or should i just seed and worry about weeds next season? Thanks for the tips man, you have been helping me alot with my lawn care! Cheers!

The only pre emergent active ingredient that would allow you to seed with pre emergent is mesotrione, they do sell it in a granular. but i haven't seen it available in utah. couldn't be wrong. Have a great day.

Hey man, I live in Malta few exits down. I got hit really bad with snow mold. Wasn’t planning on seeding this spring as I had seeded in the fall. Never had snow mold this bad. Went out yesterday to try and rake some of the areas ( lawn still wet and frozen) and noticed some grass areas pulling up. But seed and pre-emergent do not go together so as much as I hate to skip a pre emergent I plan to seed and fertilize. My lawn took a really nasty hit this year. Another unexpected cost.

Interesting. The dog urine is a high ammonium issues. Revive at Home Depot sells a spray that works well to neutralize the salt. As for seed not taking. It’s not easy with Sandy soil. The seed must stay wet for 3 weeks non stop. Cannot dry out

Those spots are not dead. Snow mold affects leaf tissue, but leaves most of the crowns and roots untouched. In the case of KBG, it will fully recover in few weeks. Raking is a good start. Throwing some Ammonium Sulfate will further nourish at low temps.

Do you run the system for the entire yard for patches? I was worried about doing this and putting stress on the established lawn for a few patches
@PestandLawnGinja
@PestandLawnGinja 8 ай бұрын
I do. the only issue is the ground temps need to be above 50 degrees for seed germination with cool season grass types and above 65 degrees for warm season grasses. when it gets hot outside kentucky bluegrass is very very very slow to germinate where rye and fescue are still fast. Hope that helps.
@PestandLawnGinja

if you're concerned about crowding the established lawn with seed its not a big deal. the main concern is filling in the dead patches so you don't end up with a ton of weeds.

great observation! I have a few videos on this subject. ultimately I use 10lbs of calcium per 1000sqft and 10lbs of humic per 1000 sq ft as the lawn comes out of dormancy then I use a half rate every other month. overtime it takes the urine spots and cuts them down by 80% the first year. every year after it gets better. it doesn't stop the winter damage but its great for maintaining.

you can. just understand the hotter it gets the seed has a lesser chance of germination compared to cooler times. its best to always keep the areas damp, never allowing them to dry out for about 3 to 5 weeks. I would also recommend using a fungicide to help combat overwatering fungus like melting out and leaf spot.

Your choices are kbg, tall fescue, or rye grass. Bluegrass is the most drought tolerant of the three. If you have ground water 15” or less the rtf tall fescue is a fantastic choice for those that don’t mind wider style grass blades. Bluegrass does fantastic in our region and often gets a bad name because people don’t know how to care for grass.
