Dryer won’t heat? This video demonstrates how to test a flame sensor on a gas dryer. The flame sensor is a commonly replaced part for a dryer not heating.
Other commonly replaced parts for a dryer that won't heat are:
Thermal fuse

On my Whirlpool Everything pointed to the thermal fuse or the coils. It described the problem PERFECTLY. I replace both of those and the dryer still does the same thing now this flame sensor describes my problem perfectly as well. This is a pain in the arse!

After replacing the bearings on my dryer, the gas would not turn on. The glass window on the Flame Sensor was blocked by lint that probably broke free during my repair. After cleaning the sensor, I made sure there was a clear line of sight between the sensor and the ignitor. Back in business. Make sure the window on the sensor is clean and unobstructed.

I had the exact same problem on my LG dryer. I replaced both the ignitor and flame sensor. I also cleaned the squirrel cage exaust fan. It was packed with lint.

Thank you! What if the multimeter reads between 2 and 3 when on the lowest setting (200)? It’s neither 1 nor infinity, nor 000. Thanks much.

I've watched several of your videos: my whirlpool duet gas dryer tumbles just fine. The gas, however, will only stay lit for a few minutes then shuts off. The thermal fuse showed continuity, so I didn't replace that. No continuity on the thermistor, so I replaced that. Still didn't fix my problem. I replaced the dryer coils, and still same thing. I put my machine through a diagnostic test but don't receive any error messages. What am I missing?

Not sure if your still replying. Replaced my flame sensor because ignitor stays on 5+ mins. And it didn't resolve the issue. What's the next step? Thanks

I'm late to the party! Dealing with intermittent heat dryer. Got valve coils on order. Wondered if flame sensor is failing? At room temp, the flame sensor has a low resistance and when it sees the glow is enough to light the gas, it opens. And flame should start? How likely is sensor normally opens at 500 deg. But because of age, it opens at 400. So it opens, glow turns off and gas doesn't get lit. Should I smell gas in that case (the coils aren't the issue / they are opening the valve a bit.)

So the flame sensor provides continuity so the hot surface ignitor can glow. That also provides a path of continuity to energize the gas valve? What is happening visually with the flame sensor? How does it determine if flame has been established? Does the HSI power down once flame is detected visually by sensor? Thanks.

the igniter won't turn off and i don't hear click so i'll manualy turn off by touch the flame sensor wire each other and then move the therminal of to established

Clean the little window on the flame side. I did and the burner fired. The sensor has to “see” the flame.

what if your flame sensor keeps going bad? is there something that would cause it to fail back to back?

I have a whirlpool gas dryer i had my thermal fuse blow i replaced it and the cycling thermostat next to it. I put a damp towel in the flame cycles on and off when the temperature is reached, but when i have a full load in it the flame will constantly run and not turn off til the cool down cycle is that normal?

liljoker7414 #219 It sounds like you have an air flow problem like a clogged exhaust vent if the thermal fuse blew and the high limit thermostat is cutting the heat off instead of the cycling thermostat. The dryer control will only advance when the cycling thermostat is satisfied which will take awhile if you loaded the dryer full of wet clothes.

I have an issue with my fas dryer. It wont heat and the timer wont advance. I checked all components and have continuity. I wire the motor direct and it worked. Dont know what the problem might be. Can u help??

My dryer starts but the igniter does not light. I replaced the igniter but no luck. Imeasured the resistance of the igniter and it was 60 ohms so its good. I measured only 56 volts across the 2 pieces of metal that hold the igniter in place. I have in the past measured 120 volts. Any tips?

I just check the flame sensor and it was open. I jumped the flame sensor and now I have 120v at the igniter connection. Thanks, this video helped me out. Now find a place I can get one quick

I don't understand the test. So if the needle or reading jumps and then goes to zero there is continuity and it's good. But if it doesn't jump then it's bad (no continuity?)

PLEASE mention that a simple test to see if the igniter has FAILED CLOSED( which will still show continuity BTW) is to run the dryer with the switch removed but still connected to the circuit. Pull one of the leads from the switch. The power will be redirected to the gas coils and you will hear them open and gas flow to be ignited by the glow plug. If this happens you have a BAD flame sensor that has failed CLOSED and not open. These switches can corrode and get stuck closed keeping the circuit from energizing the gas valve solenoids. I guess you could also test the flame sensor with a lighter or match to see if the contacts open. Your videos are well done and very clear usually. I'm surprised you completely failed to mention this part of the diagnostic process. Please update your video for other hapless handymen/women who might encounter a failed CLOSED flame sensor.

+65westfalia h An igniter is a load not a switch. A good igniter will always measure a specific resistance. If the flame sensor shorts closed the igniter will never turn off.

Hello I need help, in my garage my ceiling mounted furnace is trying to start I get a flame for a few seconds then it cuts out, the fan keeps going, and it keeps trying to light but same thing, then after a couple minutes it dies, I took the flame sensor out doesn’t look dirty enough to make something not work, I hooked up my Klein digital multimeter and on the setting where it makes noise the number eventually goes down to .7 and on the setting with the horseshoe it reads 0.0000 can someone please help.? Tia.

I had a flame sensor that FAILED CLOSED. I checked it, the solenoids, and everything else with a multimeter twice. (Everything except the actual gas valve.) Everything showed continuity... I gambled and replaced the solenoids first because they were cheaper and often fail. The solenoids were not the problem. I changed out the flame sensor and the dryer works! I spent less then what the charge would have been for just the service call

Our Radiant flame sensor showed continuity (via meter check) - BUT igniter would not glow used jumper to bypass sensor - igniter glowed, disconnected jumper after several seconds and flame came on -- then stopped test - (saw this test via Samurai Appliance Repair Man) Replace flame sensor --- now seems to be operating correctly ? Maybe continuity test doesn't show all problems with sensor

If you are going to show how to test a flame sensor, please show a complete test! If the continuity of a cold sensor was all that mattered, then why would a flame sensor be necessary at all? Just connect the two wires together and the problem would be solved! Obviously the flame sensor opens the electrical circuit at some point for some reason. What is that point and what is that reason, and what caused the circuit to open? Thanks!
