Just referred to this video to replace my cracked gear in my compactor. Great, easy to follow, instructions and accompanying video. Cost of parts was about $30. My guesstimate is that a service call would have cost me north of $350. Thank you for putting this video together!

I got everything put back together and now it “chirps” the entire time when the ram is rising back up to start position. I greased everything. But it was indeed a great video for a guy with two left hands!!

I just repaired my Whirlpool compactor using this video and the repair kit from PartSelect , What a pleasant surprise that the repair kit was reasonably priced and arrived so quickly. When I had this compactor repaired by a repair shop 2 years ago it cost over $300.00. My cost of $51.06 for parts, tax and shipping plus this free youtube instructional video was amazing.Thank you for providing good brand name parts and honest service.

This video really helped me fix my compactor. *But* I would like to add a couple of suggestions. First, I doubt anyone watching this has a pristine compactor like the one shown here. More likely, the ram is stuck in the down position preventing the drawer (which is full of trash) from being removed. You IMPLY that spinning the large gear counter clockwise will address this, but it would have been helpful to state this more clearly. Also, you should let viewers know that they should wear gloves -- our knuckles will thank you. Other than that this was a very helpful video. Thanks!

Getting ready to do mine and the ram is stuck in down position. I'm hoping I can just start at 3:20 and switch gear only which is what is broken. Love the video

To remove the ram you must turn the large plastic gear counter clockwise until it releases - all the way

After replacing several parts mine would go all the way down then I would hear the small gear spinning against the big gear so I turned it upside down and seen that there was a little bit of space between the 2 gears so I unloosened the 4 bolts that hold the motor to the plate not the 4 bolts that allow you to move the plate to get the slack out of the chain but the 4 inner bolts that hold the motor to the plate and was able to move the motor forward so that the 2 gears were together without any space between them and now my 1999 Kitchen aid with the extra pak feature works like a new one.

Use an old 1/8" drill bit to punch out with a hammer the small gear pin.

my trash compactor will run perfectly if i give the chain a little nudge. sometimes it will run 2or3 times then i have to nudge the chain again?

Be careful putting the pin back in, I hit it and chipped the brand new part. Brand new plastic garbage, which will probably need replacing in a few months again. Designed to fail. Whatever happened to quality? My parent’s trash compactor lasted 20 years with five people using it and abusing it, this one broke in just over a year, one month past warranty of course.

We, too, had a hard time getting the pin out of the small gear. We ended up just leaving it in. Any suggestions on how to remove it in the future would be greatly appreciated!
