If you put "restoration" instead of repairing the algorithm goes crazy. People love to see old machines back to life.

Agreed. You’d get more views. Especially if your thumbnails had the before and afters side by side lol

But people coming for the restoration might get angry and thumb it down when they see it's not a restoration, though.

Or we could just #restoration
@michaelfairchild5 ай бұрын
Yeah, but most restoration mean stripping a tool fully apart, clean them, replace broken parts, painting them and soo on. Most of the cases Dean just replace/fix broken part, unless removing dirt/grime/sawdust helps the machine run or in case Bosch hammers they need full service kit.
@djkarcher18965 ай бұрын
This is the beautiful thing about old well-built tools. They may not be up to the latest safety standards (this one seems to be built like a modern saw though), but you can actually fix them. Especially Makita, as they usually won't flinch selling you spare parts for a reasonable price.

That makita was a good saw but IMHO the Hitachi CU9 was and is the undisputed champion.
@johnbullard59735 ай бұрын
I have a similar vintage Hitachi 9” saw. Still running fine after 35 years, but it’s a scary brute . No soft start or brake or safety trigger, so often accidentally start it when picking it up when in use .😳

I absolutely love this. I still have and use the exact same saw. I’ve had it for 40 years as a carpenter/ builder here in Australia. Aside from the usual brushes and minimal maintenance,lve done nothing to it. It was THE saw to have. Plenty of grunt for ripping hardwood etc. Built plenty of house frames with it until Makita brought out their Drop Saw,which l also bought. I have to laugh at the young blokes with their “ toy” cordless tools. They’re forever buying batteries or charging them,..or mainly blowing them up. Meanwhile,l just keep plowing along all day ,everyday with the corded gear. At the end of a job,they reluctantly agree that their battery tools are just too expensive and fragile.

Think the guy who owns that saw needs to invest in a 220V Single Phase On/Off Switch in the future. (typing this before the video ends)

@ElMariachi13375 ай бұрын
I kinda assume that cable tie you cut off at the start might not have been from a previous repair but rather the one to hold that trigger. Great repair, those machines will last a lifetime if used correctly, even the follow up Makita 5903 is a decent one, though I have seen those come in with burned motors.

Hi Dean. What brand would you reccomend for starting out, mainly DIY? I'm want to get an Impact, Grinder, SDS Drill and a Jigsaw. Since i'll have to commit to one Brand (Battery Platform) it'd be nice to have some advice.
@deandohertygreaser5 ай бұрын
For those tools I would go, makita, dewalt or hikoki. Hikoki my be hard to get, but the quality is good now. I'm all makita myself mainly and I generally recommend them the most as the last for years and are easily repaired if needed. Dewalt is very good but motors and switch are one unit which is a problem if they ever have a motor problem, but everything else in the cam be fixed up.
@xflipnatasx61575 ай бұрын
@@deandohertygreaser Yeah- i was thinking Makita too, mainly. Thank you for your fast reply, very cool! I'm probably going for DTD155Z, DGA452Z and DHR171Z for now. Keep bringing that sweet Content btw, greetings from Germany :)

What is a good shop in Europe to get Makita spare parts? I need a new switch for a HP 1300S drill, the speed knob doesn't work anymore and the machine would work well as a compact hammer drill for delicate work in walls (5-10mm holes). Or is there a possibility to fix the old switch? (most likely not)
@getur995 ай бұрын
Do you get your bearings direct from the manufacturer? I’m guessing you get 20+ at a time. Buying single bearings it’s super easy to get caught out by fakes. Any advice…?

Would you ever dress the commutator on a motor like this? It looked pretty messy, I thought smoothing it might reduce the sparking on the new brushes.
@deandohertygreaser4 ай бұрын
The only way to dress a com bar is to turn it flat on a lathe again. This js only needed if it is uneven. Simply rubbing it clean dose absolutely nothing

Plastic shielded bearings are not quite right for the rotor, they will overheat, if you have plastic housing, i think they will fail sooner as plastic cannot disipate the heat. Max RPM is less than 30k with cooling.
@deandohertygreaser5 ай бұрын
this is a saw, that will be running in a dirty dusty enviorment. Rubber sealed bearings are the best option as they are best at keeping out the dirt. The only other option is an open bearing or a metal shielded bearing. But these will fail faster due to dust getting in and wearing them out faster.
