Cordless Makita Grinder rusted solid after being salvaged from a sunken boat.

Amazingly, this makita grinder was on board a local fishing boat that sadly capsized.
Luckily amd thankfully, all the crew were rescued, and no one was injured.
The boat was eventually recovered, and this grinder salvaged from inside after laying submerged in sea water.
The grinder was only a few weeks old, so it was dropped in to see if it could be repaired.
The batteries were obviously completely destroyed, and it looked like this grinder was too.
But in a true testimony to makita quality and repairability, all it needed was a switch, battery receiver, and a few spade connectors.
It was unbelievable after seeing the amount of corrosion that was on it.

Lol Milwaukee is crap, its all marketing. See others of Dean's videos, they are not meant to be repaired, have the tiniest chinesium bearings inside and the circuit boards are not potted which means if used outdoors they will burn out. No spare parts either, all the insides is a complete unit, including trigger and battery contacts.

Just a friendly reminder for anyone else playing with heavily oxidized copper contacts: that greenish goo is both irritant and a wee bit toxic, so remember to wash your hands properly and avoid contact with your eyes, mouth or nose (or your wiener if you have to go pee, unless you fancy a burning sensations down there for the next couple of days).

This is the exact reason why I've been a Makita customer for decades. Solid machines, a pleasure to use, fair price, and spares are easily available. I've hardly had any issues with them, and the ones I had were easily fixable or were being taken care of by customer service.

I'm just an experienced DIYer and have a few inexpensive tools that come in handy. On the other hand, when I need tools I can rely on, I choose Makita tools, most of the time Brushless, and every time I watch your videos, it reinforces my ideas. Indeed, I think that when you buy this kind of tool, repairability is more important than pure performance. Keep up the good work, friendship from the south of France. Before drying out, a rinse with warm soapy water, and lastly with deionized water in ultra sonic cleaner if available. Rinse the switches and circuit boards, out with contact cleaner to neutralise any salt. Buff the motors, stator and magnets with wool wire or light sand paper to take away the suface corrosion then coat with any type of oil or rust inhibitor product. Even wipe with WD40 would help

Step #1 after salt water immersion is to rinse the hell out of it with warm fresh water, then finish off with deionized water in an ultrasonic cleaner if you got one. As soon as it came in the shop it would have been best to drop it into a bucket of tap water with dish soap to start sucking the salt out of it. I’m not sure how good the contact cleaner does with such high concentration of salt. It can deal with some ionic contamination but saltwater is best treated with fresh water first. Drying it out first is not the best with salt on it. Sure it has to be dried after the rinse of course. A big problem with salt and stranded wires is that they wick the saltwater into the wire. So that controller may well have been exposed to some salt wicked through the wires. But they could have been lucky. Sad for such a new machine. I’m mighty impressed that it still works, though. Even if it won’t last as long as a new machine, it’s still better than going direct to the dump.

It still worked until i took the battery out to charge and the casing fell apart without the battery to hold it together.

The green substance that is produced by galvanic corrosion, especially in salt water, is copper hydroxide. When you get water into one of your battery operated electric devices rule number one is to remove all batteries as quickly as possible. This will remove the main source of galvanic corrosion. Of course, this is not on top of your priority list when you are onboard a sinking fishing boat. Rule number two is to open up the device in order to get out as much water as possible. If the water is salty you should rinse several times with pure water. To help the water out you can use compressed air and heating to a temperature that the device can tolerate.

I couldn't tell, were those wires pre-tinned? If not, I'd be shocked if they don't start corroding over time. We have that problem with boat trailer lights that go in salt water. Once there is a nick/cut in the insulation, its only a matter of time before the entire line starts turning green. IF you are bored, you can try to polish those bearings. Something we do in salt water fishing reels, take out the bearing, take off the shields and run it at HIGH RPM and dunk it in acetone. Over and over until all the balls are polished and all the rust/grease is gone/smooth. Then repack and use again.

Most contractors will have a few alternative tools so they will be using those - I get the impression some of his customers build up a box of broken tools and bring them in before their other tools break. I understand there is a small charge for looking at a tool (5 Euros I heard on another video - about $6 approx) with a fix attracting the hourly rate plus parts so why not get it looked at ? It beats taking time to list, package and post tools - you can do that if it comes back as unrepairable.
