HOOK and F14-Tomcat were my favorites in college in the late 80's and early 90's. In particular the William's F14-Tomcat has the coolest game play, visual and sound effects at the time. :)

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT Staking someone is NOT an effective way to determine if they are a vampire. In our tests we determined that pounding a wooden stake through the heart killed both vampires and regular people 10/10 times. To avoid embarrassing cases of mistaken identity use the garlic test or the crucifix test!

@@LyonsArcade As long you temper your expectations, it's a good film. I liked Hoffman as Hook (delightfully nasty but within the realm of the classic Hook) and the score for this film was excellent. It was one of the last scores by John Williams (the guy who wrote the music for the Star Wars and Indiana films) that didn't feel like it was repeating old material. I'm amazed you've NEVER seen Hook. The film is 32 years old now!

@@AvengerIICompletely agree about John Williams. I always thought that this (Hook) and The Witches of Eastwick were indeed the last true original stellar works of his career. Can feel that he completely lost his enthusiasm in anything after Jurassic Park. Weirdly, the music played during the scene at the end of Witches of Eastwick (The Children's Carousel on the OST) plays several times in this game, most notably at the start of every new play. Would love to know what that was all about??!!

I also love this game, i got it for a few years at home, and I'm sure that the flippers are incorrectly shorted with the drop targets. Take a look at it. At 36:30 clearly seen that you hit the flippers it plays the cannon's sound and lights it up too. Otherwise it looks good to me. :)

@@LyonsArcade Don't take it personal. It's not your fault, it's some other fault in the game, something seems crosslinked. Just check it out. I tell you why is it a serious problem: the game randomly award you some extra, and you need to hit some pirate cannons to get it, like some million or an extra ball. And getting it by a single flipper chopping is not so satisfying...also constantly buzzing the cannons sound will be boring. :) Keep it up the good work. I also learned by now how these machines logic working when some playfield element needs to be activated like a slingshot. May I write you some personal by mail or somehing? I think you are a skilled repairman, and i got a machine which I wrecked with a shorted extension cord and after that it works and doesn't work at the same time and I cant figure out how it can be. I just want to write the story and the working mech to you, to see if you can help me out. Thanks!

I remember that. The local arcade one had something wrong with it after about a couple weeks, but I forgot what it was. Maybe it was just removed without anyone telling me what was wrong.

Great video as usual Ronnie. Have a bit of a soft spot for these Data East machines. I think there was one with a playfield spinning disk a la “Fireball” on TMNT. Loved “Checkpoint” too.

36:40 I think a switch is too sensitive. See the flashers and boom sound every time you hit a flipper? I think that's a slingshot or one of the left-hand side drop targets. Just something I noticed! I'm sure it's just a simple adjustment.

If the same transistor repeatedly dies, it could be that the diode over the coil is open. Did you make sure the diode is good? Open diode would cause the coil to roast the transistor with high voltage, as soon as the coil is turned off (the energy associated with the magnetic field in the coil has to go somewhere and if it's not the diode, it's the transistor.... The transistor can stand this type of abuse for a certain amount of switching cycles, but not forever...)

I have a tmnt data east pinball and I’ve had the boards serviced and the machine serviced and yet after playing it for a tiny bit the display displays garbage sometimes or it says overrun or it says tmnt version. It has a rotten dog power supply in it and it’s 5 volts is around 4.95. Wondering if i should get an x pin power supply or if it could be something else?

Super obnoxious that transistor can read fine off of the multimeter but still be bad. I'll have to watch out for that on the games I work on. Speaking of pinball, I've got a KISS pinball machine from Stern at the arcade I work at that's having an issue with the LEDs on the top right of the playfield, they'll go in and out periodically. Thought it was a fuse issue so I swapped that out but it's still doing it, racking my brain trying to figure out what the issue could be

JOE CLASSIC, what do you mean by support chips and what are the support chips doing? What circuits or loads connect to the DCL, because I don't know what the DCL is Turing on/off

Another good one Ron. I have a 2013 Stern Star Trek Premium that has a Vengeance ship toy that fires a coil that makes the ship appear to crash. During multiball, sometimes when things get crazy, it will fry the transistor (STP40NF10L) that fires the ship's coil. Would that be a problem on the ship perhaps - like something binding that is causing the coil to drag and pull too much amperage and thereby frying the transistor? At least that's the theory I'm going with for now. I can replace it and it plays fine for a few dozen games then it blows it again. I've replaced it 4 times in about as many months.

Check to make sure the coil tieback diode is good. If it's faulty/missing you get back EMF that fries the transistor. If the tieback is good, I'd probably be suspecting the quality of the transistors and maybe sourcing another set from a different source. Whilst you've got the tieback disconnected to test it, also test the ohmage of the coil and check to see if it's burnt. Coil should be no less than 2 ohms.

Played it a lot as a young teen, but it wasn't really a big favorite for me, but it was the only one really reachable for me until I got a car. The display animations were really not good, because it rarely told you what to do, and even the score would often be not shown for half a minute when some mode was going. Bally and Williams got that a looooot better to inform you what to do. Ruleset of this game was ok, not really special. No real toy also, but I guess that made it much cheaper to build and then was cheaper to buy. Music with its standard fast DATA EAST rhythm pattern is a nightmare once you played like 3-4 Data East game of the time - it was always the same rhythm, terrible. They put no love into it it seems. Still I had some time and of course all those movie quotes got stuck for ever in my brain.

Great game! Hook, & the Data East Jurassic Park machines were always a favorite of mine. I have a hook playfield as a wall hanger in my gameroom. Ron, just curious, but do you think the sound board issue might be a grounding issue also? My High Speed machine has a similiar issue when it is in attract mode. Hello from Phoenix Arizona🌡🔥
