Repairing Leaking Shingle Roof

We find evidence of a leaking roof by water stains on the ceiling. Upon investigating the roof we see no visible damage but find an obvious soft spot. We show you how we removed the shingles and bad spot in the roof, and then repair the roof with new wood and shingles. This is done on a mobile/manufactured home, however basic concepts are the same for conventionally built homes.

I’m not specialize on roofing work at all, and had learned a lot from your video. However, I do believe that you forgot to place waterproof tar paper before you place shingles back to that area?!

Hey man, I'm a contractor assistant, studying for my G.C. I wanna thank you. My company inherited a f***Ed up roof, and your video gave me some ideas on diagnosis and treatment. So I took this project on solo to prove to the boss I'm more than a day laborer. I'm a dude with a brain and a gift for physical exertion. Thanks brother.

I consider the roofing felt as the water proof membrane. the shingles are there to protect the roofing felt from the uv rays and critters from damaging the roofing felt. In extremely windy areas, I over lap the the felt 12" to 18" to prevent water from being blown up under the edge of the felt as well caulk between the layers of roofing felt. Shingles are not a waterproof membrane. Deck repair looked good. shingle placement looked good too. I always match the deck material. The paper under the shingles is the very cheapest roof waterproof membrane known. Properly installed 30 lb roofing felt will keep water from causing this kind of damage for 30 years, but it is very difficult to slip under the paper in a repair. I've removed roofs that the shingles were totally degraded and falling apart but still no leaks because of the roofing felt installed. There were a few brands of shingles that didn't require roofing felt, but the ones on this roof were not of this type. I would inspect the rest of the roof from the inside for more leaks. The crappy piece of wood was a nailer that looks like it had failed when some one stepped on it tearing the paper when the roof was new. This is is what caused the roof to leak.

Thank you so much for recording this and explaining the cut out on the truss. Funny comment on the builder. I am needing to repair a smaller section on my back porch - where the roof was flat (they didn't think to slope it) and I was forgetful to not clear out the fall leaves, that I guess rotted through the flat shingles. My only surprise was that you did not install any 'black paper' or even asphalt tape to the wood for a 2nd layer of protection. I purchased the black asphalt crack repair that can also be used for roofs. Thanks so much for recording and uploading. Now you have to fix the interior stain!:( Good Job!

I have a similar problem as this of some sort and I will be honest this was probably 1 of about 3 other videos that really explained and helped me get an idea on how to fix my problem with very simple explanations... sometimes we need simple words instead of all the professional terminology some trades use ... thank you for your VERY helpful video sir i am very happy I came across it..

Great video, we have a 20+ year old roof but don't have the cash to fix all of it, so we'll have to fix what we can. I wish you would have included the tarring (not sure the terminology) part. We we're also surprised you didn't put a second layer of protection over the new wood, like several commenters have already stated - we'll probably use something. Thanks for the educational video, such a shame all mobile homes are made to fall apart after a decade or so, but this video helped.

This comment is for the guy in the video , I've been roofing for 22 years , and been a licensed contractor for 15 years , anyway about the bad comments , those bad comments usually come from people that don't understand the minimum specifications of the trade , when I was sitting in a classroom to pass the state test , I learn about the minimum requirement by the roofing industry , NOT by some idiots trying to re invent the wheel . the only thing I would point is , you didn't use felt under the shingles, BUT...that's not a problem , I come across roof that don't have any felt AT ALL over the entire roof and they never have a water leak. So ...if you place the nails where they supposed to be , you don't have to worry . About the plywood sheathing ...it doesn't make any sense to upgrade to CDX , when the entire house is built with OSB. I'm a professional roofers and I come across many CLOWNS that will never be up to my level of knowledge and they still think they can teach the roofer how to roof . It's funny but true. You did wonderful and keep uploading your videos and hope you master the trade some day . I like your video ! Greetings . Eric Garcia.

Great job friend! Thank you for sharing this with us. We have a roof leak right now over our utility room. As a woman, I find a roof leak so disconcerting. But I have faith that my husband can repair it, because we can certainly not afford the ridiculous cost of a new roof right now. The one thing that our ancestors had over us was that they could just replace their whole roof with what nature had to give them. They did not have to worry about a $20k new roof. We live in such a ridiculous time - even down to our cars that all have become ridiculous - a common person cannot even do simple repairs to these new cars. We've really dug ourselves a grave as a society. Sorry for the rant. I told you, I'm quite distressed right now. Peace and Love to you and yours.

I've gone through most of these comments and while I agree with everyone about the underlayment I must add that IT'S CODE. Hilarious that "Roofing Solutions by Eric Garcia" says "I come across roof that don't have any felt AT ALL over the entire roof and they never have a water leak" I thought he was in California where Code is actually two layers of underlayment. So to not have any means whoever put that roof down didn't care about the Code. There is a reason that's in the building code. Call your city offices and ask for the International Residential Code and then ask them what changes the city made or added. Unless you live in an area where it never rains I doubt your local code says you don't need an underlayment. I live in El Paso, Texas where the sun shines most of the year. It rains we hardly ever get snow, but an underlayment is still in our local code. However on my roof I took it a step further I did a layer of Tyvek and a layer of 30lb felt. Before that though I used Graco and taped the joints of the sheeting. I covered the eaves with self-sealing membrane then the Tyvek and felt. The retired roofer that lived next door to me said, "that's never going to leak." That was my plan. The person who had installed the prior roof violated code 1) used 3/8 inch plywood over 24O.C. rafters 2) did not use any flashing on any vent, duct for the AC, none on the chimney 3) basically glued a skylight cap down to the roof opening, no curb, no flashing, no protection whatsoever 4) no flashing in the valley no membrane just intersecting shingles sooooo I made sure I would have no problems in the future I used 5/8 plywood, underlayment as stated, proper flashing everywhere, built my own skylight curb, stuck to Code or did it better. Followed the six-nail pattern for high wind on the shingles. Best thing I can say to everyone if you follow the Code and the instructions on the stuff you use whatever project you do will last a lot longer when done right.
