How to replace a EAS air compressor assembly on a Range Rover Sport or LR3 2005-2009 to alleviate the "Suspension Fault Normal Height Only" error. Your suspension fault may be caused by a faulty air compressor if you have the fault code C1A20 "pressure increases too slow when filling reservoir".
This replacement was one of the very first repairs I did on my car, and was required when the vehicle was about 7 years old. It may be possible to complete the repair for free or around 30$ if you buy a air dryer rebuild, but it's likely you will need to replace the entire assembly to alleviate your problem.
Scanner that can read LR codes (like C1A20): amzn.to/2JEBR2p
Parts required:
Original Hitachi Compressor (best option, more expensive): amzn.to/3FHID1b
Aftermarket compressor assembly (cheaper, shorter life): amzn.to/3SpmegT
I recommend getting a OEM Hitachi compressor because these will last about 70K miles, these will be $500-700 unfortunately, part #LR023964.
Tools required:
13mm socket or wrench (for battery terminal)
10mm socket or wrench (for plastic housing)
4mm Allen key (for the 3 bolts holding the assembly to the bracket)
Tool set I use that contains all above tools: amzn.to/46VKwU4
Optional items:
Compressor rebuild kit (amzn.to/2JJwvDg)
Works with RRS or LR3 MY 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009

My LR3 alternator was going bad and thats why my air supspension didnt work well. I changed alternator and after that my supspension worked great. Apparently if you have little too low battery voltage it may cause "normal height only" warnings.

Hi Jay - I replace my compressor as per the video and it was extremely helpful - thanks! One thing I did differently, as I wanted to preserve my clamshell insulation, was to remove the whole compressor and mounting bracket as a unit. The lower two bolts were easily accessible, and finding that hard-to-reach 3rd upper 10mm bolt, I used a long reach 10mm socket connected to a swivel joint, to a 6-inch extension to the 3/8-in. ratchet driver to reach it. With that, then one could address the Allen screws easily while the whole compressor/mountain bracket unit was off of the vehicle. Upon installation, the key was to secure the lower 2 -10mm bolts connecting the mounting bracket to the frame 1st, then the upper 3rd bolt was fairly easy. Thanks again for the outstanding video series on the RR Sport. I ordered a similar Blue Tooth rig for my phone and will likely do the same exhaust - delete as well! Best, Jim

@HazyJay
@HazyJay 3 жыл бұрын
As far as I know the AMK was supposed to be an upgrade from the hitachi, going from an AMK to a hitachi should have the same air tubes. Some people dislike the AMK because they couldn't fit the old cover over it, so it was loud and easily damaged since it's exposed to the elements.

The amk compressor (and bracket) can take the place of the hitachi (original) compressor, but after it is switched, the vehicle will need a software reflash and a new relay needs to be installed in the fuse-box. A knowledgeable indy shop or the LR dealer should be able to flash the software.

Hazy, I have a question. When I drive my Range Rover I feel like every single bump is felt. Also if I hit dips at an angle I feel like I’m gonna pop out of my seat. My steering wheel also vibrates when arriving at stops or at certain high speeds. Could it be my struts and if so which ones should I buy. It sits level and raises and lowers whenever push access height or standard so I don’t have any leaks on my bags
@HazyJay
@HazyJay 3 жыл бұрын
If it's excessive bumps it very well may be the struts, especially if they are 15 years old or so. Steering wheel vibration when stopping may be your rotors or lower control arm bushings, although usually the control arms make a knocking noise when you're stopping.

Hi Haze, this video was very helpful! I have a Range Rover sport 2007 TDV6, we took it to a mechanic because I got it on off road mode and then it didn’t go down for a week, everytime i turned it on and pressed the lower button the suspension fault came up, the 4x4 screen said it was on standard but it was stuck on Off road height. Mechanic plugged in a OBD and managed to get the front 2 wheels down but back 2 are stuck up. He said it’s a air pump/compressor fault. But he said it is the main air pump that needed to be changed, he also pointed out 7-8 “air pumps” on another Range Rover sport 2011 which he was working on and on the said LR he pointed out that the air compressor was in the middle of the chassis. He said it needed to lift the body off the chassis and then change the air compressor. So my question is, is there another compressor in the rear and at the centre of the chassis? And do you think it could be a compressor issue with my Range Rover. I would like to fix it myself if possible, rather than pay Almost £900. Thank you for your videos, will definitely be following the L320 series!
@HazyJay
@HazyJay 3 жыл бұрын
There is only one air compressor for the RRS and it's in the middle like shown in the video. The full size range rover L322 has the compressor in the back, but you can access it from the trunk. The mechanic may be referring to the rear valve block which sounds like it's clogged given the rear refuses to lower. This doesn't require taking the body off to replace, although you may need to remove the spare tire to get some room, this video shows removal of the rear valve block: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b8hhfbtlqMi4nKs.html. That being said, replacement of the compressor will cost at least $600 USD because that's how much the compressor costs for parts alone if you get a really good deal off ebay. You can try buying an aftermarket one for like $150 but these don't last very long (maybe a year or so from what I hear)

I got someone with an more advanced Snap on tool to have a look and the fault codes he found were U0132 lost comms with ride height control module, U0421 invalid data received from ride height control module, C1A00 control module. Which almost makes sense because when all 4 wheels were stuck on Off road, when I press the lower button it cancel out and go back to the standard on the 4x4 screen. Any ideas what else it could be? I have since spoken to a mech and he said he will check the valve block to clean it
@HazyJay
@HazyJay 3 жыл бұрын
@@cadendgama1427 Yeah if the wheels are stuck in one position it sounds like the valve block, the codes make sense as well. Since it's all 4 wheels it's likely the valve block closest to the compressor between the wheels on the driver side. They can be fully replaced with a new one for about $30 and 20 minutes of work. Don't let the shop charge too much just to replace it.

Id guess the suspension is still air springs because otherwise the yellow/red light would stay off or stay on (depending on if they installed a bypass), that being said, the intermittent yellow/red light is typically caused by a worn out air compressor (this video) or a intermittently faulting ride height sensor (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n9aqndKWscDSoWw.html)

I just used a wrench with an opening large enough to go over the hose but small enough to compress the base. You compress the colored base then pull the hose out. This light started coming while I was driving with play in my driver lower control arm bush which was eventually replaced but does this have any connection with the issue? Took it to one LR specialist who thinks compressor needs replacing but I want to try anything else first. I will clean the air pump as you say but is there any other cheap fix ?
@HazyJay

It could be the compressor but make sure there is no random movement of the wheels on the 4x4 info screen while you are parked. This may indicate a worn height sensor which could be causing the issue as well. I have a different video on the height sensor.

If the pressure doesn't rise fast enough the suspension fault will trigger, and the compressor will shut off due to overheating. You likely need a new compressor along with correcting that blue connector leak. The leak may have lead to decreased life of the compressor.

You will need to reflash the computer to remove the chime noise, lights, and reinstate the drive modes (sand, snow, etc). The only thing that stays is the "Speed 30" message will intermittently come up, but it will be silent and there will be no light. Usually reflashing tools come with the springs, but if now, you might need to visit the dealer. Atlantic british sells the tool with springs, but I don't think they sell it on its own, you might be able to ask them if they would sell you JUST the reflash kit.

Hey I’m not sure if you still respond to this video but…. My rangie has been sitting at my mechanics for awhile now. Replaced the front valve because well thought I would start there. So so back story. Would randomly get the orange normal hight only error would turn off then back on and would clear eventually it obviously would not work. One morning woke up and it was slammed on the front bumps. When turning the car on the compressor would run for 30 seconds then get error and turn off. So I started with the front valve because well it seemed straight forward… (insert Range Rover laughing in my face) After my mechanic replaced the valve block he ran diagnostic and error code came back U01 32-87 lost connection with ride hight control module. Good thing I know my mechanic and he did some tinkering and noticed no air flow to the front at all… He doesn’t have much experience rr’s but nearest rover dealer is 2 states away… 😢 rural Montana here and I’ve got what I got.. but still very thankful. I’m little stuck on where I go from here. I have called and talked with the parts and service center at the Range Rover dealership they all tell be 99% of the time new compressor fixes everything. BUT they have no exact help without having it in shop. No way can get it 2 states away for anything less than buying a new car… Really really looking for any advice. I have never replaced anything since owning except a break light and hood latch sensor. I am second owner so unfortunately I don’t know what was done before me. Please help!!!!
@HazyJay
@HazyJay Жыл бұрын
Yeah I would say it's likely needing a new compressor. The compressor will shut off after about 30 seconds due to heat, but ultimately failure to reach a certain pressure in a certain time will also cause it to error. A new compressor should fix the issue, but make sure to get the hitachi (OEM) on, since aftermarket ones are generally terrible.

Not typically, however, it is dangerous to drive if the front/back or left/right ride heights are SIGNIFICANTLY different (can get out and look) or if the suspension has collapsed all the way down to the bump stocks (no air in the suspension). Usually the warning comes on and everything looks relatively normal, I know people drive with the warning for 10s of thousands of miles without issue.

If you have multiple error light on at once all of a sudden it is likely that you need a new battery. I recommend an advanced glass mat battery (AGM), they will last a while and provide enough consistent voltage to alleviate most errors. For example, when my battery gets low my parking sensors start not working and I get transmission faults.

@@ancapop501 This may be an instance where you will need to take it to LR to get it scanned with a LR diagnostic scanner. It's likely something simple and cheap is malfunctioning (a module, software, sensor) causing a bunch of ruckus. When there's a bunch of errors at once the problem is typically electrical, where in the electrical system is tough without using a scanner. As for the fan noise, the viscous fan could get stuck so that it blows hard even when the engine is cold, see if you can spin the fan while the car is off. If the fan is stuck you may need a new fan clutch.

I took compresor of. Strange thing is that no of three air lines had pressure. Mean time vehicle was on jacks with battery disconected and it was still standing on off road mode. Next thing i checked kompresor, piston place and rubber ring was in perfect condition. So i greased it a little and put back. Another intersting thing is that when you put vehicle in raising mode, back jumps imediatly, but front is raising very slowly. Then you put in acces mode, lowest one. Turn the raising again backs jums up like in 2 seconds, front very slow. If the compresor were bad-wouldnt the back would be raising slow too?
@HazyJay
@HazyJay 2 жыл бұрын
The back rises first because when you raise the vehicle the front and back valves are open at the same time, but, the back of the car typically weighs less and requires less pressure to rise. Since the engine is in the front, the front will rise slower than the rear.
@HazyJay
@HazyJay 2 жыл бұрын
The only air that should escape when the compressor is removed is air retained in the lines from the compressor to the front/rear valve blocks. When the car is off, the air springs should not be communicating with the compressor because the front/rear valves default to closed, so removing the compressor when the car is off shouldn't lower the springs unless there is a huge leak at the valve blocks.
