Replace damaged diaphragm Causing Leaking Sprinkler Head and Valve

www.AimArizona.com If you have a leaking sprinkler head, then it could be the valve.
0:09 Check your water meter, it is usually out by the street.
0:12 Stare at the small triangle dial at the center of the gauge. If it is moving, then there is a leak somewhere.
0:40 Confirming there is a leaking sprinkler head. Check the closest head to the valve and/or the lowest one for that zone.
1:25 Open up irrigation valve box and listen for any water leaking thru the valve. Also, you can touch the valves and feel which one is leaking.
1:44 Shut off water supply at back flow.
2:00 Unscrew the top end of the valve
2:15 Pull the top section off. Careful to make sure none of the parts get lost.
2:18 Check the diaphragm for any obvious damage.
2:34 Flush out any debris that might be in the valve.
3:22 Replace damaged diaphragm with a new one. Make sure you put the spring back in. Almost all valves have a spring inside. Reassemble valve.
4:06 Turn the water back on. Listen for the water leaking thru the valve.
4:40 Double check for any leaks by staring at the water meter.

Wow thanks for that great video I never realized you could check the water meter for small leaks like that I usually just turn off the valve manually and check the emitters until it finally stops leaking which can take a while to see if it's closed completely. I was actually searching this video because I want to know if you can tell when a diaphragm is bad just by holding it in your hand if it sticks in the open or sticks closed position or if it's still pliable like a new one and always snaps back let me know if you need a clarification. TIA

Generally what we see is a diaphragm that has debris stuck in it like a rock or a small nick from debris. There are cases when it gets old and the diaphragm has been slowly "corroded" by the chlorine in the water over time. When this happens you will see a bunch of black residue on your hands when you handle it. So glad this was a helpful video for you!!!

My sprinklers are showing the same leak yours were toward the beginning of the video, however mine only happens when the zone is activated (either manually by turning the solenoid or electronically via the control box). Could this still be a diaphragm issue? I already swapped out the solenoid and that didn’t fix the problem.

It is most likely a diaphragm or solenoid issue. If that does not fix it you will have to replace the entire valve, there could be a defect in the valve body.

I have a leaking orbit impact sprinkler. When I turn off the main it stops when I turn the main on but the stations are off it leaks.

Check the valve that your sprinkler head is connected to. Shut off the water to the irrigation system, then take that valve apart. It's probably the diaphragm that is damaged or has debris in the valve. Replace the diaphragm and see what happens next.

I have gone through 4 diaphragms within the last 3 months. i've cleared debris each time and ensured it was clean but it still breaks in the same spot. any ideas?

I'm not sure what you mean by it "breaks in the same spot". Make sure you are flushing the valve out really well. We have had one client that kept getting debris into their lines from the city supplied water on a regular basis. What we did was install a brass wye filter at the back flow, so the debris would be caught up in the filter and never get to the diaphragms. I need ur help again: Zone1 heads pop up/seeps water for few secs, whenever I start any other zone. What do you think?

That's a tough one without being there. Can you disconnect the wires to that zone, turn on the other zones from the controller and see if it does it when they are disconnected? That way you can isolate it from the electrical system. I don't think it is the issue, but would be good to isolate it. Also, take apart the valve and make sure everything on the inside is seated properly and the screws are tight on the zone 1 valve. Good luck

AZ Irrigation & Maintenance disconnected wire zone1 from controller, & but Zone1 heads still lift up for few secs when starting other zones. Next I will try opening up zone1 valve (HunterPGV) & checking for debris. (I’ll be proactive & buy new diaphram, to have it ready). I’ll post back here, thx!

AZ Irrigation & Maintenance all I ended up needing to do was turn the flow control knob on Zone 1 valve to the right some...which limits the flow & increases pressure. Weird, but hey it worked.. now zone 1 heads don’t initially spray when running other zones!

Good to hear it was an easy fix. Whenever there is a flow control on the valve, we turn it all the way open then one full turn down.

AZ Irrigation & Maintenance this left me with a question, why was this even occurring on zone1, when running a diff zone?

My setup is well pump, not city. Replaced the diaphram, valve seems to work fine manually & automatically (timer controls). Sadly my low point head still dribbling after zone shuts off (about 5 min worth). Any ideas how to fix my low head drainage issue? Hunter PGP rotary head.

Sounds like the sprinkler head is in a low spot for that zone. You will need to install a check valve at the lowest head. Unfortunately, Hunter does not make a PGP head with a check valve. They do have check valve heads for their Pro Sprays.

Gravity will pull water to the lowest point because there's water in the lines so it'll dribble out until all the water is gone
