In this video I'm replacing the 1TB 5400 rpm hard drive with a solid state 1 TB Samsung EVO. I'll show how to make an image of the current hard drive, make a repair DVD, make a recovery USB, take out the old drive and put the new one in, then reimage the new hard drive.

I have the same laptop and just swapped my old disk by this Samsung EVO SSD following your guide and everything was smooth, plus I learned how to do it without using any other tools rather than just win10. BTW thanks so much truly for saving me a few bucks as I dismissed the idea of buying a new Dell Inspiron until at least another 3 years.

Jeff, thank you for the nice comments. Yes, there is such a amazing difference in performance. And, the SSDs are totally quiet. I mean that you don't hear the little clicks and clacks as you would from a regular hard drive. If you haven't bought your SSD yet, let me suggest that Amazon has the 1TB 860 EVO drive on sale now for $109.97. That's a pretty good deal. All the best.

This video is near the top KZfaq videos EVER - it was clear, instructive, and gave the exact direction I needed to resolve my frustration with my (old) Dell 5559. I got the exact same SSD from Amazon, followed your instructions, and the results are amazing. How shall I show my gratitude other than to say thank you? Shall I mow your lawn, or wash your car, etc.? No matter what I will pay it forward and try to pass my knowledge and expertise on to make somebody's life easier and more productive. Thank you "bestgirlsdad" - you have made my entire day!

So much helpful video. I was able to successfully upgrade HDD with Samsung 870 QVO Series 1 TB SSD on Dell Inspiron 2016 model watching your instructions. The only issue I faced was with the recovery pen drive after booting for the first time, selecting System Image Recovery --> Selecting System Image Backup and hitting the Next Button it was asking me to restart the computer using Repair Disk. After booting the machine using the Repair Disk and following the same steps as shown in the video, I was able to successfully able to transfer the System Image to the new HDD. My machine is now working as New with faster booting time and performance. Again thanks for the great video.

Hello. Glad you liked the video. I did have one problem when doing this. My original HD was 1 TB which I made the image of. But, the laptop only had maybe 250 GB of data on it. So, I figured that I could get by using a smaller SSD. The first SSD I tried to image was a 500 GB. I couldn't seem to get the 1 TB image to go on to the smaller 500 GB SSD. Windows kept saying there was some error. So, I purchased a 1 TB SSD and it worked just fine like in the video. Thought that I'd mention this in case you have a problem. It is possible that using Windows to do this, you should have the same size drives.

hey dude what about migration software of samsung
@bestgirlsdad
@bestgirlsdad 4 жыл бұрын
I have not used the Samsung migration software, but I have read good reviews for it. I've also watched youtube videos on how to use it. Seems like it works well. I just prefer to make images rather than clone with migration software. I have more peace of mind knowing that I have a backup image in case something goes wrong with a drive. I can install a new drive, and put the image back on to it. And, for example, I have three Windows 10 laptops here in the house for my wife, and two daughters in school. In the last month or so, we've had to do a Windows Update from version 1803 to 1903. Before I did the update, I made an image of each laptop just in case the update went bad, and I would need to put the 1803 image back on. Fortunately, all of them updated ok. But, I've read horror stories of people whose updates didn't go well. I thought the 1903 update wasn't actually going to work on one laptop. It got stuck at 82% for well over an hour. I almost shut it down, then it finally started moving again. I also like to make an image every couple of months as a backup. I have not had any trouble using the Windows backup image function. It is pretty simple for me. There are plenty of other imaging programs you can buy that do more things. I did find something with the Windows imaging that I didn't know. Since my daughter's laptop HD had less than a 100gb or so on it, I thought that I could save some money by installing a 500gb SSD. That didn't work. Since the original HD was 1TB, the Windows imaging wouldn't work on a 500GB drive. I had to get a 1TB SSD, the same size as the original, then it reimaged fine. Thanks for asking the question.

Hi! Great video, do you need a brand new external HD (with no files on it) to create the image file? Essentially asking: can I create the image file on the external with files in it and won't have to worry about the image file deleting everything in the external HD?
@bestgirlsdad
@bestgirlsdad 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. Glad you liked the video. I have put images on drives that have other files already stored on them and it doesn't over write or delete them. Your storage drive has to be formatted NTFS, or Windows won't save the image. I'm not sure, but if you have the drive formatted, for example, as exFat, Windows might ask if you'd like to reformat NTFS, in which case you would lose the files you had stored. Personally, I have one external drive that I use just for images formatted NTFS. This is because I use both MAC and Windows and format my other external drives with exFat so I can use with both machines. You can put multiple images on a drive as long as you have enough space.

Glad you liked the video. I appreciate the nice comment. I'm not sure what it could be. I initially had a problem when I replaced the hard drive. It was that my original hard drive that I made an image of was 1 TB. My new solid state drive was 500 GB. I thought that I could use a smaller solid state drive. But, the image I made would not go on it. I can't remember the error message. But, it didn't say...you have the wrong size drive. So, I purchased a 1 TB solid state drive to match the original's size and the image went on fine. Here is another thought, if the problem is when you are saving an image, the back up drive should be NTFS. If it isn't formatted NTFS, it won't make an image. Let me know if this helps.

Hi, How I know wich SSD driver works with this dell? or any SSD works?. Amazing video. Thanks for the information!
@bestgirlsdad
@bestgirlsdad 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Victor. Thank you for the nice words. The hard drive in the 5559 is a 2.5 inch SATA drive. The 2.5 inch is called the form factor, and SATA (Serial ATA) is the type of interface on the drive. So, any SSD that is 2.5 inch SATA will fit right in. There are various brands you can buy. I like the Samsung 860 EVOs because they have good reviews for being fast and reliable. And, a five year warranty. A lot of drives have three year warranties. I just figure that if a company gives a longer warranty, it is probably a better product. Amazon has the 1TB 860 EVO on sale now for $109.97. One thing I would mention...if you are using the Windows imaging like I did, you have to replace your hard drive with the exact same size. My laptop had a regular 1TB drive so I had to replace it with a 1TB SSD. It's just the way the Windows imaging software works. It won't let you put in a different size than the one you imaged. Hope that you have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Hi Siddhant. I do not know the answer to your question. I have not used the Samsung tool to migrate. This is a very good question. I have installed new SSDs on three laptops using the Windows 10 imaging like I did in the video. I found out when using Windows 10, that I had to use the same size hard drive. My daughter's laptop only had about 200gb on her hard drive. I thought that I could make the image for the 1TB drive, then put this on a 500GB SSD to save some money by buying a smaller SSD. But, Windows 10 would not let me do this. I had to buy a 1TB SSD, the same size as the regular 1TB drive that was in the laptop.

Hi Marwin. I did this upgrade on two identical laptops. Each of my daughters in school have one. I went back and looked at my Amazon orders. I used the SAMSUNG SSD 860 EVO 1TB 2.5 inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-76E1T0B/AM). Here is link to the ones that I purchased... www.amazon.com/Samsung-Inch-Internal-MZ-76E1T0B-AM/dp/B078DPCY3T/ref=sr_1_3?crid=GMRNHOXYF1YX&dchild=1&keywords=samsung+860+evo+1tb&qid=1596292815&sprefix=samsung+860+evo+1tb%2Caps%2C153&sr=8-3 I'm not sure of the difference between the /AM and BW drives. Physically, they seem to look the same. In googling them, there seems to be a lot more results for the /AM, than the BW. I went to samsung.com and found both of the drives. The packaging seems exactly the same. But, you can only buy the /AM on the site. For the BW version, samsung directs you to find other locations to buy the drive. Maybe the BW version is just some marketing thing to let other resellers sell it? Not sure. I did find this on Amazon about packaging. www.amazon.com/ask/questions/TxO1SU8TALH4CW/ref=ask_ql_ql_al_hza My daughters use their laptops all the time. We've had no problems at all.
