Replace Leaking Copper Drain Pipe with PVC - Easy, cheap

I replaced a section of my leaking shower drain pipe with plastic for about $10. This is a simple quick patch using some common tools and parts easily found at a local hardware store.
The one big thing I would add that I did not mention is to make sure the pipes on both sides of your cut are well supported BEFORE MAKING THE CUT! You do not want to cut a pipe and lose support to any of the good piping, as this could cause a domino effect of pipes falling/breaking to the next level of support!

I have this same problem. House built in 1972. I can do the repair myself but I thought I would give a plumber a chance to do it. I figured they had all the necessary parts and it would take him no time at all. Estimate.....$800!!!!!! Highway robbery. Yes its a profession but no where near reasonable. Now thanks to you, I will be handling this project myself.

Thank you so much this solved my problem of going from copper to PVC.

Great job Loon. If it was my house I'd replace it with a bow p-trap with clean-out fitting instead of just a normal one. That will give a chance to clean up dirt clogs that may happen in the future.

True, though I figured if I ever have issues with it, the flexible couplings make it very easy to remove that entire section and clean it out. If I had replaced this with something more permanent (i.e. not flexible couplings), a p-trap would have definitely been used. Thanks for the note!

Where is your clean out on your new plumbing job?

Gluing and fitting the PVC joint would have been easier if the horizontal Fernco was tightened the last.

The p trap looked like it’s from the 1960s.

it wouldn't surprise me at all if it's the original - i believe the house was built in 1959, so you're pretty much spot on =]

Do you have to turn the main water off?
@loonhunt
@loonhunt Жыл бұрын
No, it's a drain pipe, so the water main can stay on. Just make sure nobody accidentally uses water in the sink/shower/toilet leading to this drain or you will get WET! :) I'd suggest turning off the appliance that drains here if you're worried about it and/or adding some colored tape over the appliance so nobody accidentally uses it as you're working on it.

Does the copper go inside the pvc?
@loonhunt
@loonhunt 4 жыл бұрын
No, the PVC and copper are about the same size, so one doesn't fit inside the other. I just put the 2 ends as close as possible to each other (touching end-to-end), then the rubber coupling goes around both of them, holds them in place, and provides the seal. I've done this more than once and haven't had any of them leak yet (it's been over a year). Eventually, all of these old pipes will need replaced, but this is getting me through in the meantime =]

Loon Hunt got ya! Thank you for the response, I’ve been thinking whether I should tackle this myself or hire someone. I will be doing this for pipe under the toilet and don’t want to risk getting leak because it will be nasty.

Dude did u seriously go back and wipe glue all over the fitting connections and use the wrong ferncos?
@loonhunt
@loonhunt 2 жыл бұрын
Hey- no, I used a clean rag and wiped off the extra glue at the end. The flex couplings were the closest match that my local hardware store had and they've not leaked in 2.5 years, so no complaints here. They're cheap and easy to swap out if I ever need to, but there's been no need =]

That is not a code compliant fix, whether it works or not! They make a special no hub connection which is sized for PVC on one side and copper on the other!

I always see those ferncos being used. It's there any residential application they can be used and up to code?
