At over 20 years old lithium ion batteries wear out even if they are unused, they will have a reduced capacity. Thankfully its fairly straight forward to replace the batteries contained within the battery pack and while we are at it we might as well put a higher capacity battery in there because... why not?
Before attempting this I would recommend protective eye ware and a bucket of sand should it go wrong! I accept no responsibility for any accidents and just because I managed to do it without incident this is not a guarantee that you will manage the same!

It sure can! The only let down is the slow pixel refresh due to the DSTN screen, shame its not a TFT

@@HandheldComputing Interesting! I will see if I can downgrade video quality to attempt to match the output/hardware and monitor refresh capability. I wish I knew about these before jumping into the Pocket PC scene. I assume the price was the detractor at the time. Thanks for this video! Well done!

The 728 is my go to device and the one I compare others too, I only wish the screen had a faster refresh for watching video on, but you can't have everything!

Thanks for explaining the procedure, especially the re-tagging of new batt cells. I expect to to do several cell replacements in the near future, one of them is for toshiba e800.
@HandheldComputing
@HandheldComputing 2 жыл бұрын
The e800 has a flat battery pack, you should be able to replace its battery with a pouch battery you will just need to solder the pouch battery to the BMS and of course get the correct size to fit the space!

Always excited for another one of these videos, keep it up! Love these old handhelds. I bought a Cassiopeia A21S in an ebay lot for super cheap, it uses AA batteries in a cartridge on the back for power. Since the whole thing is removable makes me wonder if there was an 18650 pack available for it since it has a charging port on the device, or if it just used AA rechargable cells.
@HandheldComputing

It used a NiCd pack. A lot of the early HPCs did, they moved to NiMh before switching to Li-ion with the change to power hungry colour displays. Glad you liked the video :-)

Related to this, if you have a CLIE PEG-NX70V, you can easily replace the internal battery that is a 900mAh LiPo with a 1300mAh one with dimensions of 60*37*5 millimetres. It just fits enough without stressing anything and you have a bit more than 30% extra battery capacity. I believe some other CLIE PEGs use similar type of LiPo batteries, but not sure though.
@HandheldComputing
@HandheldComputing 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for that, it's not one I have though I do have the 770C which I suspect uses a similar sized battery

Sorry to ask, but the positive end from the former battery and the negative of the later do not make contact? I don't know how to insulate both batteries if they are in parallel with so little space. Thanks for the video.
@HandheldComputing
@HandheldComputing Жыл бұрын
They don't make contact but it is fine if they do. The two nikel strips connect to the same point on the BMS so it doesn't matter either way

Can anyone explaine me the difference of "tagged" and "not tagged" battieres??
@HandheldComputing
@HandheldComputing Жыл бұрын
Tagged batteries have metal strips (tags) attached to the +/- terminals. This is useful as it limits the heat transfer to the cell itself during soldering 😃

What’s an issue with some of these hp and others vintage handhelds, is that the plastic cracks and breaks apart so easily.
@HandheldComputing
@HandheldComputing Жыл бұрын
It is an issue on a lot of vintage devices as the UV breaks bonds in the plastic polymers. The HP ones seem to be the exception the plastics don't seem to have become brittle at all unlike the Libretto CT50 I have which is quite delicate

Terrible shame that HPCs never moved beyond DSTN screens. Those passive-matrix displays were just too unpleasant for me.
@RichsRandomRetroReviews

For the most part they're 'OK' - as long as there's not too much moving on screen, or you're not that bothered about colour reproduction. Some of the PDAs did ship with TFT displays and they were amazing but obviously added to the cost of the device.
@HandheldComputing
@HandheldComputing 2 жыл бұрын
As Rich says they are OK. But I agree the high latency makes them a poor option for video playback and the colour rendition isn't great. That said they offer good contrast and low power consumption so they were the obvious choice... 22 years ago ;-)

I love STN screens, I like them a lot .. Am I the only one on earth ? I used to hate them like everybody at the time, but with the vintage wave that we're experiencing now, I find them terribly charming and the TFT's absolutely boring. For me, STN is a lot easier on the eyes and it gives me the E ink feeling I was looking for after years of abuse from the TFT aggressive back lighting. I've got an old 486 for the same purpose a few days ago, I enjoy the DSTN screen so much. Then I just ordered another Celeron laptop with a HPA screen which is an advanced STN technology, I can't wait to received it.
@HandheldComputing

Its true, there is a certain charm to the STN and DSTN screens, I defiantly don't get as much eye strain as much on the Jornada as I do on my IPS phone display... though maybe that's my age!

@@HandheldComputing I'm very sensitive to computer/mobile phone displays, for me it's night and day. I'm OK with the poor contrast, ugly ghosting etc if I can feel comfortable. I really don't get all the hate over the STN screens in the vintage community. It's like people now running real 8/16 bit computers on new TFT screens, I don't get it. If you're really serious about going back in the past, you should use CRT's, period. Or just stay with emulators.

Popularised by vaping?! The 18650 used to be in pretty much everything long before vaping came along and before the rise of lithium polymer batteries. Today, most devices still use 18650 cells if they don’t use lithium polymer cells. All laptop packs were made up of 18650 cells, they’re used to make up the batteries in electric cars including Teslas. Vaping is literally one product out of millions.
@HandheldComputing
@HandheldComputing 2 жыл бұрын
Its true, in industry and manufacturing 18650's were in common use from the late 90's but for most consumers short of opening a laptop battery pack or ordering a dodgy Chinese torch they won't have seen an 18650 in person. In addition by referencing vaping I am also suggesting an easy place to buy them. But point taken 🙂
