This is quite possibly the greatest "how to" video I've ever seen! I'm pretty mechanically inclined (repaired most things on my shitty grand prix already) but never changed a strut before, and now I feel confident that I can. Thanks again!!!

Getting ready to replace both rear struts using quick struts on my '01 Grand Prix. Great video, straight to the point. Thankfully I have air tools like you, so shouldn't be too hard to get the rusty bolts loose. I also chuckled when you said don't drop the bolt, then promptly dropped it. And again when you reattached the dust cover and said good enough. LOL.

I was a MBZ and Jag'Volvo mechanic 40 years ago. Now I'm a Master Maintenance in a Steel Mill. Excellent video. I wish you showed how to replace just the shock. It's not hard, and can save $50 a shock. But with the broken spring, replacing the whole strut is better and cheaper. Again, good job.

any Racheting wrench regardless of the brand is not meant to take that abuse with the hammer, or braking bolts loose in general. That's why the GearWrench broke in the middle of the job due to user abuse.

Something to be aware of.....There was barely clearance to pull the old strut past the brake drum. When the new strut goes in, it has to go in top first and then past the brake drum, however, when you angle the top part in you will not be able to get the single locator bolt in the top plate of the strut assembly into its proper hole until you get the bottom end past the brake drum. This locator bolt adds about 1" to the length of the strut, enough to keep you from being able to slip the bottom end past the brake drum. Plus, since your new strut is just that---new---it will probably be completely extended making it longer than the old strut that came out! I had to undo the brake hose to get more play in the drum and also unbolted a torsion bar that goes from one rear wheel to the other. Even with that additional play it was a struggle to get the strut past some sort of knuckle behind the brake drum. I finally got it wedged between that knuckle and the top of the fender and with some judicious knocks with my hammer, I finally coaxed it past the knuckle. Then I could straighten the strut so the locator bolt would go through the proper hole and I was on my way. I suppose there might be other parts that could have been removed to make things easier but I couldn't see any. Good luck!

Am doing this now, good video, but you never mentioned bolt/wrench sizes. I am now finding that there are differences between bolt sizes for: a) the car in your video b) what's currently on the car (one is working on) c) what the replacements have. (Not the first time I've seen this. It happens) As I'm doing this, I have found that with the endlinks, apparently it's going to vary. the struts I am removing now (b) were 18mm main, and rather than an allen head I had to use a 14mm on the inside (Space between end link and stabilizer bar) to keep it from just spinning (which was the function of the allen wrench) These new replacements (c) have a locking nut of some kind (14mm) on the outer area with an 18mm head for the inside (Space between end link and stabilizer bar) However, I don't know if that's the difference between sealed and grease fitting models. (removing sealed, installing greasers... They sent the wrong ones. I ordered the sealed ones, but these work just as well!) Oh, and the strut tower bolts in the trunk are 15mm, the tower to spindle are 14mm nut and 19mm bolt head (Top) and 22mm nut with 20mm bolt head (bottom). (not changing, just noting) I am starting to think the previous owner's name was Franken-something

Was the body where the strut mounts rusting out on this model? This was becoming a big problem on my 98 Grand Prix. Basically the strut cavity was ripping away from the rest of the car.

@MattsMotorz
@MattsMotorz 9 жыл бұрын
Henry Sanjurjo The body was okay by the strut mounts, however it DID have some under body rotting that I had to repair with body filler. The hole is just an extra hole. This is an aftermarket strut and likely fits multiple models.

@MattsMotorz
@MattsMotorz 10 жыл бұрын
Depending on which bolts you mean, you can try a big cheater bar /pipe. The best option would be to use some heat (acetylene, and maybe propane) to heat it up first and then loosen it..

Hey, I have a 98 Grand Prix one strut assembly broke and is now resting on the tire, I have to do all four because it makes more sense to fix them all before they all break. I got a couple of problems one do you think this job could be done without power tools? I tried to replace the ball bearings, but the axil nut was frozen in place in fact it snapped my breaker bar in two. I don't know if this will be possible without power tools. the second problem is both front strut holding towers( the place where the bolts are connected to the car under the hood.) are complete rusted out like there is pieces of metal just sitting on top of the tower in the ring around the bolts. I don't not about the bolts themselves but if they are even half as bad as the tower then I going to have a problem, What do you think, is it possible to do them my self with what I have available?
@MattsMotorz
@MattsMotorz 9 жыл бұрын
Sean O'Brien Almost any job can be done without power tools. In fact, for situations where I need a LOT of torque, such as breaking an axle nut loose, I use a breaker bar because you can get way more torque out of a long breaker bar than you can out of an impact (Unless the impact is a VERY nice expensive one). Also, get yourself a good, long, quality breaker bar. I can't believe the one you had broke! Impacts however makes things a great deal easier, especially with rusty bolts. Any many times with rusty bolts you run the risk of snapping the bolts without an impact. But for the strut mount bolts, who cares if they snap? That will make your life easier. They aren't threaded into the body or anything so when they snap the strut will just fall out and you can remove the snapped bolt pieces. I also do not agree that you need to replace all four. Many times one side goes bad while the others are still okay. Just check them out. Some might disagree with that statement, but my mentality is why spend money that you might not have to? (but again, inspect everything to make sure its okay)
@blackbird7124
@blackbird7124 9 жыл бұрын
MattsMotorz Ok thanks, my breaker bar broke at the neck where the bar and socket connected so that's why it broke. My struts are original to the car and went bad like 4 years ago, but they weren't broken like the one is now so I am going to try and replace all of them, and the car has gotten lower because of the springs so if I replace one or the two back ones the car's ride height will be off. Thanks again.

@jeffrice3638
@jeffrice3638 7 жыл бұрын
Dan V Anytime after replacing any suspension parts it's wise to have an alignment done. In his case putting on a brand new strut with a new coil spring it is highly recommended. Over time coilsprings colapse or in his case break.

so i have a 02 grand prix gt i changed both rear struts and now my abs and traction off lights are on what could the problem be?
@MattsMotorz
@MattsMotorz 8 жыл бұрын
+Carl Corbin The ABS wheel sensor wires could have been damaged or unplugged during the repair. Go back and check the condition of the wiring to the sensor and the sensors themself. The sensors are attached to the steering knuckle and measure a reluctor ring on the rear axle on each side to ascertain wheel speed.
