Replacing MaxxAir fan gearbox. In this video, i will go over the process I did to replace the gearbox in a MaxxAir fan. This is a simple process only requiring a screwdriver to complete this task.

At 0:28 you say open the fan itself, but for me all these opens (manual, remote or buttons) won't open the fan. So I can't get under it to unscrew it. Do you have any advice perhaps?

Hi Dn140890, thank you for watching and posting your question. The challenge you are going to have is, if the gearbox is is broken then the teeth could be jammed, hence it will not open. It is unlikely that you are going to be able to remove the screws to open the top while it is in the closed position. Your safest option might be to remove the whole fan from the base or at least remove the screw to enable you to gain access to the screw in the top. One good thing about the Maxxair fans is that removing the fan does not break with weatherproof seal you make when you install them. Hope this helps, please let us know how you get on.

It took us a week but we managed to fix it. Both the lift motor and the circuit board were broken and had to be replaced. First I had to disconnect the two arms from the inside of the fan (you do that around 1:03 in the video but from the outside) and then I could get all parts apart. Thanks for your help!

Hi Dn140890, glad I was able to help. I suspect the board burnt out due to the motor being jammed by the gearbox. if you have any question around any of our other video, please feel free to comment and ask.

Yes,apparently they are rubbish. But a couple of suggestions.Firstly take out the two bolts which hold the two halves of the gearbox together and fill the casting with a good quality waterproof grease, reassemble letting the excess grease ooze out then close it up.This gives a bit of extra protection to the wear surfaces.Second ,it is possible to disconnect the lift motor from the circuit board, this allows manual opening without straining the teeth in the gearbox, this does not affect the fan operation.I would agree that it defeats the object of automatic opening but it does mean the gearbox is under far less strain as you can feel the stops rather than let the motor wind to the limit of its power.

Hi Eric, thank you for watching a commenting. That sounds like a great idea, I'm guessing this is what have had to do with one. Its a shame that the gearbox is not better made in all honesty. The only saving grace is that if you need to replace the fan it does separate from the base so it does not break the waterproof seal with the roof.

my fan works fine but the problem is the lid wont open or close unless i manually open it. Is this part you installed going to fix my issue?

Hi Powderdawgz, thank you for watching and taking the time to ask a question. It is impossible to confirm 100% that this will fix your problem, sometimes when I have not used the fans for a while the lid will refuse to open on the first time of pressing the open button, this is due to the rubber seal sticking the lid closed, what I do is press the close button and and then open button once more and this normally fixes it. If you have already tried this and it did not work for you, it would be worth winding the lid open and see if it closed off the button, this way you will know if its working or not in both directions, once you have done this, I would open the lid, so you can see the gearbox in this video and test to see if there is movement when you press the button. The only problem with doing this is lining the position back up correctly, so when you press the button the motor only moves the gearbox between its open and close position. Another thing you could check is that the gearbox itself is working by removing it and try to turn it by hand, again remembering its position as it will need to be in the correct position when put back in. After you have tried all of this I would hope you will be able to tell if its a gearbox or an electrical problem. please let me know how you get on.

This is such an easy fix to do, its just a shame the gearboxes do not seem to be that strong.

Thanks for the video! Your fan doesn't leak? The sealant around it looks super barebones?

Hi MyGoogle, thanks for watching, no its totally solid, here is a link to the install of our front fan: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mLd4gNOnnrTHXX0.html and here is a link to the install of our rear fan: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mdhgZblyqJexcXk.html In both cases we were very mindful to ensure it sealed well. Using the sealant tape to seal under the frames, we felt was the best way to go.

Would've been good to have a clip of the new gearbox raising the hood. Mine is pretty whiny and always has been. Would be good to compare to see if replacing mine would help.

Hi Paul, thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. If you would like I am happy to film a short of the fan opening and closing with the new gearbox installed for you to listen too. Please let me know if this would be of interest?
