You’ve likely seen our DIY video on replacing brake pads and rotors on a typical BMW or MINI (if not, watch it here; blog.bavauto.com/go/brakejob). The video shows how easy it is to replace the front and rear brake pads and rotors, without paying a shop a few hundred dollars. Since the video was published, BMW has introduced electric parking brake systems on many of the newer and current models. While the front brake renewal procedures have not changed, the procedures for replacing the rear pads is unique, due to the addition of the electric parking brake system. There are currently two different electric parking brake systems. The first generation system uses an electrical actuator that activates cables to standard drum-style parking brake assemblies. The second generation system uses electric actuators directly on the brake calipers.
Here are the links to our other brake service videos:
blog.bavauto.com/10012/bmw-bra...
blog.bavauto.com/11430/bmw-diy...
As noted above, the second generation electric parking brake system incorporates an electric motor driven caliper piston extender mechanism than mechanically extends the brake caliper piston to compress the pads against the brake rotor (as opposed to a separate small cable actuated drum brake assembly inside the brake rotor’s hub, or hat). Unlike a standard brake caliper, the piston cannot be simply pushed back into the caliper, using a piston compressor tool. According to BMW, the pistons must be retracted through use of the BMW factory scan/diagnostic tool. The tool is connected to the vehicle’s diagnostic port and then programmed to retract the pistons through the parking brake motor actuators. Once the parking brake piston extenders are retracted, the standard brake pad replacement can proceed.
So, you ask, do I have to take my vehicle to the BMW dealer for rear brake service? No.
As a DIY BMW owner, there are two options in servicing the rear brakes. We can use an aftermarket fault code and scan tool (availavle from BavAuto.com) or we can manually retract the actuators by performing a bit more work.
In this DIY video, we’ll show you how to circumvent the BMW parking brake retractor program and perform your rear brake service at home. Follow along as we perform the rear brake pad and rotor replacement on a 2010 535i (F10 chassis) with electric parking brake.
All products noted in this video can be purchased in our online store, www.bavauto.com/, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Good and clear step by step directions. What I notice about this and many other brake service vids; no one cleans the area first with Brake cleaner spray, and no one uses one or two drops of penetrating oil on bolts and nuts that have not moved since factory assembly, AND lastly, no anti-seize upon reassembly.

Really nicely done. I didn't realize that you could just remove the actuator and it wouldn't cause any lights. I bought the tool and it has worked great on a VWs, Audis and a few Mercedes. I will try it on a 2011 750I soon enough.

I have found it’s useful to loosen the brake disc (rotor) hub fastening bolt while the parking brake is still activated, to avoid rotating the disc. This is especially useful on the front discs (RWD cars). The disc fastening bolt is frequently stuck from rust).

I've done 50+ brake jobs in my life but this was the first with the electric parking brake on my BMW 550. The video really helped, thanks Bav Auto. Someone asked about whether or not they need to buy the piston compression tool. No. Most time you can use your two thumbs and slowly push the piston in. Sometimes you need to use one of the old brake pads, flip it so the pad side is on the piston, then compress gently from the back with a large channel lock (16" - 4" jaw) or a large C-clamp. One other note, when turning the electric brake center hole clockwise, understand it will take 30-40 quarter turns of a ratchet. It will finally stop. A handy tip is to have a jack stand under the caliper to support it while you prepare the pads and clips, it takes the strain off the brake hose.

Hey thanks for making this video. a couple questions from when I was working on a 2018 X3 and ran into a couple issues. When retracting the parking brake, I got it all the way to the end stop, but the piston wouldnt retract in when using a c-clamp. I thought it might have been due to the parking brake not fully retracted so i tried rotating it fully counterclockwise, then clockwise again. When that happened, the torx bit on the caliper side was able to spin more and now doesnt hit an end stop. The piston also came out of the dust boot and I was leaking brake fluid ( I messed up somehow, trying to figure out exactly where or how). I ordered a new dust boot and plan to rebuild and bleed the system. My questions are, is the park brake destroyed to where I need to buy a new one or can i somehow tighten the nut on the threaded portion behind the piston to repair it? How can I get the piston to fully retract afterwards so I can get the pads in? Should I open up the bleeder valve to release some pressure in the system? This is the first BMW i've worked on. Other cars i've replaced pads and rotors for didnt have this kind of system.

Excellent and clear video. Just one more thing. When you compress the piston, keep an eye on the brake fluid vessel in the engine compartment. If it is filled up to high , it may overflow when brake fluid is pressed back to the vessel.

Very nice job 👌 The only thing I would add is, when you are removing the caliper @ 3:40.. Just be careful when your moving the Caliper to access the Power operated parking brake Screws and system... You don't want to twist and put to much pressure on the brake line. YOU DON'T WANT TO RIP/CRACK OR DAMAGE IT!! 👍😊

Excellent installation , I have to install breaks on 2008 750li if weather is sunny I have purchased the parts. One of your video changing transmission fluid was good one too it saved me a lots of money, after changing the transmission fluid the car will go forward only in any gear but won't reverse it was overheating , The problem was cooler lines from the side of radiator the both lines were leaking fluid the rubber hose were not working . I went to dealer the cooler lines were $ 773.00 the installation was extra , I did explain the situation they said get cooler lines installed if the problem still didn't solve come back we will be glade to get you a new transmission for $7000. Wen I install the cooler lines I started the car it was working perfect but was jumping backwards and forwards but there were no signs with transmission wheel or overheating. your vides are very helpful thanks for posting them.
