Repotting My Bird Of Paradise Plant (Strelitzia reginae)

In this video I repot my bird of paradise plant (Strelitzia reginae) which has been in the same pot for over two years and is in desperate need of a larger pot. Strelitzia grow large fleshy roots which can sometimes push the plant out of its pot, regular repotting is important, especially for younger plants to allow space for their roots to develop.

Mine 2 flowered after 5 years. Bought similar size to yours. Roots are incredibly fleshy and are so strong. Both were doing the same as yours and pushing the plant out. I've repotted twice now in 5 years. Hope yours flowering soon

I repotted my bird of paradise yest, it was in red clay extremely dense soil.. the poor thing had root rot and was suffocated.. just praying that it will survive.. I watered it thou😣 but.. i did put fungicide on the cuts.. fingers crossed that my lil plant will survive🙏 thanks for this video.. i will remember all the things u mentioned when I repot it again next yr.. hopefully.. lots of love and thanks🤗

Hopefully your plant will recover, adding grit or perlite to the soil will help with drainage, they do best in soil that drains well.

I have one of these (Strelitzia reginae or orange bird) that is a 3 clump plant I bought at a local nursery here in Lake Charles, LA (U.S.). It was in a rather large pot from the nursery when I got it about 3 years ago. I haven't taken it out of its pot to check, but I just don't think it's pot bound yet from the sheer size of the pot. On second thought, I put this on my "to do" list tomorrow and if It's crampted like yours, I'll step it up one size, this time to a slightly larger terra cotta pot. Thanks for posting. 🪴

I bought a small seedling earlier in spring. Now the roots are coming out of the bottom and it is indeed trying to push itself out. I Ned to repot ASAP!

Their roots grow very quickly even if the growth above ground seems slow.

My leaves are curled similar to yours. Is this normal? I repotted and had to remove leaves. Looks better but its curled.

It's hard to trust your advice as you allowed your plant to suffer in such a miserable condition for so long. Cutting the main root is not recommended. I'd rather cut the cheap, plastic planter to save the root, not the opposite.

Bird of paradise plants flower sooner when they are pot bound, that's why I kept it in a small pot for so long. The plant itself is very happy and healthy and is now flowering. As long as its just the end of the root that's cut its OK, you just have to be careful with watering for a few weeks whilst the cut section heals. It's better to have a clean cut than a tear sometimes if it's badly stuck in a pot cutting off the pot can cause tear damage to the roots. But ideally no roots should be cut.
