This is the first repotting of my Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) trees since I got them in Oct of 2018. I'm potting each of the trees in individual pots.

Yeah, Bonsai Supply! You introduced Jerome and Mari in an episode when they were visiting Canada (was that Toronto?), before they moved to Georgia. I’ve always been pleased with any purchases from them.

Hi Nigel, I’m catching up, because I was away for few days. To be honest I didn’t have much hope for those Firs, but glad that they made it ^^. Mycoriza on those roots was beautiful! We shall see how they will look in 2-3 years time ;) can’t wait. Lots of love

Hi Nigel, good to see these trees developed the roots the way they did... they came out of the mountain soil with pretty much no fine roots. And one-sided they were as they were all collected on the steep slope. Th large one has roots all around now - good sign of good health and trees getting used to your climate. Surprised that the small one did not make it, usually the younger the seedlings are the better they take the collection from the wild... or maybe it only looked young? Who knows... hard to believe it was almost 6 years ago... time sure flies, feels like it was yesterday... All the best.

I'll have to get used to seeing those three Douglas Firs separately, but I don't think it'll take long, because they look good on their own already!

I have a single douglas fir seedling that germinated (from my 20 or so seeds I got online), survived being damped off, survived the hot humid mid atlantic summer, and just went through his first potting from a seed cup. I hope I live long enough to see it become something like that first tree, rugged, and natural looking, but still with charm and style. I know you arent a big fan of literati style trees, but the second two, last one especially, has some cool potential in that style. Good stuff as always Nigel!

Awesome, yes germinating a seed is just the start, usually out of 25 seeds that germinate, only a hand full make it to become a bonsai!!

You must be having a really early spring this year. I live in the states. Here. the willows and maples are just thinking about budding. it will be at least 6 tyo 8 weeks before we have any buds on the conifers. Douglas firs are native to my area.

DF#1, Cool! Nice work on the root system by the good doctor. DF#2, Great surgical skill by the good doctor shown. Nice idea on DF#2 pot, triple layer of soil. Excellent root surgery on DF#3 by the good doctor. That is why Dr. Nigel is our #1 root surgeon.All 3 DF's are now in great shape for this new growing season.

Nigel, do you remove the rocks when you water? I have used that technique and found that the soil stays pretty dry under the rocks
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 4 ай бұрын
I do sometimes, but I find the round rocks better, the water just flows around them and gets into the soil easily!

Do we need to apply the same process on roots as we apply for branches of a conifer to keep the sap flowing?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 4 ай бұрын
Yes, I would, it is very risky to take an older root back unless it has some roots still coming off of it. Younger roots are Ok to take back a little harder!
