You're very welcome Derek!! They are very easy as long as they have good drainage and a lot of light. You might want to invest in a grow light from Amazon to help them get through winter. Unless you live very far south, it's hard for them to get adequate light in the winter months. Good luck!

You're welcome! Yeah, I agree people make the whole plant thing WAY too complicated. And they hold onto a sickly or crappy plant and put so much energy into it. I have no problem throwing out a sickly plant and getting something fresh. We have fantastic nurseries and plant shops here, so why be so stressed out over this? It's supposed to be fun!

Cheap 10mm diamond drill bit and cheapest small angle grinder for drilling, and you can drill drainage in everything. I turned every old coffee mug into planter with drilling.

Well draining pots are the most important thing for any potted plant. I know people like to get fancy with soil mixtures and all of that. But really, if your pot drains like it should, your plant will do well.

I always put a coffee filter in the bottom of all my plant pots. Keeps the soil in and drains easily.

It’s not really necessary to do that but you can do it if it makes you feel better. ❤️ The water is still being held in the bottom of the pot and succulents want to dry out completely in between watering. I was taught to forgo any impedance to the drainage when I took my master gardener training but i had followed the advice of adding rocks until that time. Now i never use anything to slow the flow of water and i even make sure outdoor pots are elevated to allow full drainage.

You're welcome!! I've switched to hens and chicks away from these succulent varieties because they are so much easier to keep, but still are part of the succulent family. They are called Sempervivum and can live outdoors in my garden zone all year which is exactly what I wanted!

Hello! Repot when it seems too big for it's planter. If you can't get water to the soil because the leaves cover the top completely, it's definitely time!

I've always broken up the root ball and got the dried up soil off the roots from new succulents from stores... is that bad?

I definitely don't think it's bad! This one had such fine little roots I decided not to disturb them. If you have well developed roots growing in a circle, then that definitely needs to be broken up and cut to stop the growing pattern. But this had such fine roots I didn't worry about it. I bought this from my good local nursery who grows all their own plants in their own greenhouse, so I am less likely to worry about anything being in the soil. Something from a box store, I might treat it a little different.

I use the basic cactus soil for these plants and the rocks are pea gravel from my garden. I've also bought pretty decorative rocks in the floral section of Joann or Michales which I love using.

Wait till soil dries completely, insure drainage, fill the new pot with soil, make divet, pop your plant out, set into divet, and pile up soil to fill, don't pack hard. Got it! Thanks.

It sounds sort of complicated when you write it all out like that. LOL Honestly, the biggest thing I've learned about plants is having well drained soil. That is the most important thing and it pertains to all plants except for water plants who like wet feet. Otherwise, they all want drainage. Good luck to you!

You can make your own drainage holes with a drill. That’s what I do when I find flower pots with out drainage holes.

Thanks for the tip! I haven't tried it yet on ceramic pots but I've drilled holes in plastic pots. Did you have to run water to cool the cutting as you worked on it? I've seen people using water to cool the bit.

I'm going to be doing it today, actually! Sadly I knew nothing about succulents when I first bought a cute little "succulent garden". No drainage holes, tiny pot, glued on rocks, and crowded succulents. So I watered once a month (oof) and now one is root rotting I believe. I'm going to replant today and hope for the best. I don't know what to do about root rotting tho. I don't want to lose Jeremy lol Have any tips? (It's turning brown from top down. The leaves aren't mushy yet tho)

Oh gosh. It's hard to save them once they start going. Honestly, I would harvest a couple of leaves from Jeremey and put them on the soil and let them root new plants. I'm going to be honest with you, I think succulents are difficult to keep. Unless you live in an area with their natural environment OR have a really nice system with indoor grow lights for the winter, I think they are incredibly difficult. My climate is not conducive to them, and I'm not willing to set up an indoor grow system for the dreary winters we have. So I essentially treat them as annuals now. I buy a couple of fresh ones in the spring and do a couple of plantings for the summer. And then change the plants the following year. I say this to reassure you that you are not a terrible gardener! These are difficult to keep, and I see so many people beating themselves up over them when they have trouble. So don't feel bad if you have trouble with them. It's honestly NOT you!! Regular house plants like pothos and even monstera is so much easier! I do have several plant videos if you go to my channel home page and search succulents or plants. I hope that helps you! @@PattymacMakes Thank you! I feel better lol (still feel for my poor Jeremy). So I just carefully cut a few leaves off and stick them in a new pot with drainage holes? The other succulents in the garden (Moon Cactus and a Barrel Cactus) seem fine. Both are flourishing even tho it's cold and rainy were I live. Jeremy looks like an Aloe (I know he's not since I have Aloe) So his leaves are very thinnish. Will it still work?

Of course!! The have really shallow, delicate roots so they do well in the dish style planters, but you can use whatever you like the best. Good drainage and enough sunshine is the main thing for them to be healthy. I also like the liquid cactus food and use that on them.

Thank you so much! It keeps the plant bottom from sitting in water which is something you don't want in any plant unless it's a water plant. Pretty much all plants like well drained soil which prevents root rot.

Well, you can put the nursery pot into the decorative one and remove the nursery pot to water and allow it to drain. Or if it's a larger pot, you can carefully drill holes. The makers have gotten better recently about including the drainage holes though.

If the roots are circling you can pot up. Also clip the roots to encourage them to grow down and not around. I hope that helps! Generally check your plants in spring and see where things are in term of growth.

Hi! Does it have to be gravel specifically? Or can you use things like pebbles? Also do you have to change the gravel or does it stay like that throughout?

Hi Mimi! Just tiny rocks, and only a very, very thin little layer. If you use them at all. Recently, I haven't been using them at all. The main thing is the drainage. You want the water to basically run right through the pot. You will soak your plants and then let them dry out in between waterings. It's called soak and dry method and it works for just about all the plants. I hope that helps! Thank you for a great question!

I have carpet flooring but I still wanted to start taking care of plants. Just to confirm..I won’t wake up and find water and soil all over the carpet from the draining? Haha I’m new to the draining method and I noticed it makes a big difference in the plant’s life

@@SincerelyMimi My trick is to water in the sink and let them drain off in the dish drainer for a couple of hours before returning them to their spot. You do want to have a dish under the plant to collect anything at all that might come out. I put pebbles in the dish so any further drainage doesn't get sucked back up into the pot. In a day or two. You're biggest issue is more to do with drainage and letting the plants dry out completely in between watering than how long to wait after repotting. In my personal experience. Good luck!

You could do it right away if you have a pot you want to use. Just be sure to use cactus potting mix and have plenty of drainage! I hope that helps!

@@brittlgentry You're welcome!! To be honest, I'm not precious with my succulents or house plants. I feel like I can always propagate something new or get a fresh one from the plant nursery. In my garden zone, I found most succulents too hard to keep so I switched to something called hens and chicks which do well outdoors here and I don't have to fuss over them. You might want to consider an indoor grow light if you don't already have them. My succulents struggled so hard every winter here because of low light and I frankly gave up on them. I did finally get grow lights, but I use them for growing food indoors and starting seeds.

@Pattymac Makes Yeah I am just trying out with them, fortunately in Colorado we get loads of sunlight and I have a great window that recieves sunlight the majority of the day. I'll see how things go and take it from there. Hopefully they will survive 😂

@@brittlgentry That good light will definitely help!! It's also hours of day of sunlight and they are so high light that they suffer in my house. I still really like them but I had to let them go. They get new ones every year in my nursery so I can get a new one and put it in a pot, which I've done. Treating it more as an annual like I do with the palms. Anyway...good luck with yours!

You can use whatever! I generally use the pea gravel that I use for my garden space, but they have all sorts of pretty options in the craft stores and even in the houseplant section in a chain store. I've even used pretty stuff for aquariums. I'm speaking about top dressing the soil, of course. You can really have some fun and be creative in how you top dress the soil.

You can put the nursery pot in and then remove it to water. Or use decorative pots with a good fake or even air plants. However, I stopped trying to keep air plants and switched to fakes, because they are so good. I use the decorative planters for those. I also stopped trying to keep any indoor succulents and switch to Hens and Chicks which is a Sempervivum and will grow outdoors in my climate year round. I make out door arrangements and leave them out. If they don't make it I just buy some new ones in the spring and replant. If I see an Echeveria and I just have to have it, I treat it as an annual because it's just not going to make it through the winter here.

You certainly can, but I haven't had any issues. I generally water in the sink to make sure every thing is adequately soaked, but even so I don't have soil running out. I feels really weird not to do the rocks or screen or some sort of barrier, but it really does work ok without it. I have several plants of all sizes and I pot them all basically the same way. I've killed my succulents over and over using old cactus soil. Always buy new cactus soil and perlite.

I think it has more to do with drainage than soil. I don't even use perlite when I repot them. To be honest, they are difficult to keep unless you live in their native climate. I don't live in their native environment and have to bring them in every winter. They never get enough light, and I am not interested in doing grow lights all winter. I treat them as an annual at this point. It's hard to get good, healthy specimens where I live and getting through winter here is all but impossible. I switched to Hens and Chicks which can live outdoors here all winter and if I want one of these specialty succulents, I get it knowing it it's just for the warm season. If you feel like changing soil helps you, then I think you should do it. I'm not attached to them enough to go to all the extra work and expense for them anymore. Just keeping it real.

Anyone have any tips on how to clean out soil from the inner rosette after repotting? I’ve tried cleaning with water but don’t want to over do it as the leaves may absorb too much...

You can blow the dust and dirt out but a small, dry paint brush works miracles! If the leaves are really fuzzy definitely keep the brush dry. Some succulent leaves don't handle water as well as others. But the dry paintbrush is what I used when I was making arrangements of these in the florist. Hope that helps!

@@jordang5509 You're welcome Kate! Blowing out the bigger chunks helps and then the small paintbrush gets the rest of it. I would dampened it and wipe the gunk off onto a paper towel. It does not need to be dripping wet to do it. And it's super zen to listen to some chill music and clean up you succulents. Enjoy!

Cactus soil is generally preferred for these guys, but I have used regular potting soil as well. Having proper drainage is really your primary concern. I do have other videos on setting them up. If you go to my channel homepage and search succulents, other videos will come up.

I have no idea what they are doing, Earl. I had my training with the Master Gardeners in my city, and that kind of thing was never discussed. The important thing for all plants is well draining soil, not overpacking the soil when repotting and not over watering, and proper light conditions and temperatures for the plant. Succulents like well drained soil and they should dry out in between watering. They generally like warm temperatures and high light. Though some varieties tolerate cold well. I have switched to the Hens and Chicks type of succulents so they can stay outside here all winter. They require almost no care, and that is a welcome change as I find the rest of them are constant work. Most varieties are not low maintenance, and I have been switching to lower maintenance plants the past year. I hope that helps!

If it's all stretched out, that's called etiolated. It means the plant is not getting enough light. They require a LOT of light. 10 hours a day of bright light, and that is impossible for me, personally, in my climate as we go into winter. I would require grow lights to keep mine healthy all winter, and that is not something I'm willing to do. You will have to cut off the plant to the top rosette and start it over. This is really a spring activity, but depending on your hemisphere, you may be going into that season. Here is a video I made on this situation. And living in equatorial climate...kinda hard to know when it will be fine to re potting my succulents 😅..ouh 1 more question. This one succulent that i have is quite tall and it grow it's leaves only at the top the lower part is erm only stem i think.. . Im afraid it going to topple over.

@@iqasyahiraa2727 Watch the video I shared in the comment. I think it will answer questions. You probably need to find a brighter location for the plant. If it's stretching out, then it's not getting enough light. You will need to chop off the top and re root the top to save the plant. If you are in an equatorial climate, then I would expect any time of year is fine to do this as your temperatures should remain pretty constant. But the plant needs more light. I would move it to an eastern facing direction and see how it does after you have cut and repotted the top. Good Luck!

I know people like to talk about how easy they are, but I think that depends completely on the variety. If you can get a variety called Hens and Chicks, I highly recommend them. They are so easy and live through anything with just about no care. I have switched to them and have been very happy. My climate has a mild winter, and they will live outside the whole time! This makes me so happy.

Oh gosh, that's always the way. Well you can always drill your own holes, or use air plants, or use good fakes. You can drop the nursery pots in and out of the decorative pot as well.

Can't you just drill a hole in the bottom of pots to create a drain hole ?

Sure you can! You just need to be sure the hole is the right size and you need to use the right drill bit and water. The pots can crack if you don't do it just right. I think it's a drill bit for tile that people use. There are videos on doing it, so search drilling holes in ceramic pots.
