Since you are playing with my favorite rocks, I thought I'd share something I invented as a child with you guys. Take a gallon milk jug, on the neck, right under the cap, take a needle for sewing, the small one in your kit and poke a hole in the neck, put a few rocks in the bottom, add a little water and then loosely place the lid over it and wait a few minutes until the acetylene pushes all the other gasses out of the jug, once you strongly smell only acetylene gas by barely lifting the lid and sniffing, place the lid on and place somewhere near someone who doesn't suspect anything, like 10 feet away, not too close because when it does it's thing it blows white paste all over the place, like the walls, ceiling etc. Then when no one is looking light the hole and you will get a small pilot flame, then back off. The flame will slowly melt a bigger hole and after a little while you will get an m-80 sound and as I said anyone too close will be painted white. Obviously take care when lighting it and don't be too nervous, it's only acetylene after all, do not use anything but light plastic jug such as a milk jug, anything thicker can hurt you with flying debris. A milk jug is tough enough it just rips and nothing becomes shrapnel.

It can be very extreme, be responsible! Remembering my younger days, I have played with even more exothermic reactions than this, but acetylene can give extremely loud bangs! Don't let your fun make others suffer!

Cu or Fe is supposed to be used as a catalyst for this reaction. Might explain the low yield and mess in the reaction tube.

Here's an interesting Reppe chemistry variant for the homelab: synthesis of 1,4-butynediol by bubbling acetylene through an agitated slurry of catalyst (13% Cu on pumice) in aqueous formaldehyde at 90°C, yield 90-95%. This kind of reactions usually requires a very specific wavelength so there's nothing to guarantee that LEDs will complies.

Have you tried to make Naphthalene by the same process? It needs to flow acetylene gas under the charcoal heated over 400C.

Is Walter Julius Reppe wrote any chemistry courses, books?

In the center there is just some quartz wool to provide some surface for the reaction to take place. You could certainly try it and see if it works. I don't think there are course books. However, Reppe Chemistry is of course very interesting to take a look at and he has several publications. If he has written some, then they are going to be in german anyways.

That is what I am going to do! Well as I figured out from the Zelinsky's works is that a charcoal main purpose to obtain high pressure for reaction via capillarity force. I am gonna try to make the same setup as you shown in this video and then to play with quartz wool/charcoal and maybe will try to blow benzene gas into the reactor tube. So, how long you keep the setup working? I am gonna try to keep it working about 5-10 hours to take all possible fractions and then identify them. Thank you for your reply! P.S. - Maybee I shall try to learn german in fact of that case:)))

Are you interested in the process itself or in making usable quantities of MeOH? It can by done via partial oxidation of methane with a Pt catalyst, however the process control is not easy. We might try it but dont expect huge yields. A simpler method would be by SN2 of chloroform with OH-.

I was watching codys lab when he made the methane generator. I thought it would be awesome to make it a liquid fuel for easy storage and handling. Also in addition methanol can be used in a fuel cell to generate eletricity. Would be cool if you could teach for example farmers and people living off the grid how this could be done. I myself love electric cars and solar powered stuff as well as chemistry in general and also how to use chemistry for clean fuel.

Thanks a lot. Sorry for the late replay. I'll take a look at the video and I'll do some experiments towards the partial oxidation of methane in the next days. The difficult thing really is to not completely oxidize the methane to carbon dioxide. If you succeed in intermediatly producing methanol, it is perhaps going to be hard to stop at that point and not to go further towards formaldehyde and formic acid. However, we'll see... BTW: Do you know if there is a commercial setup that you can buy that would convert the methane into methanol? If yes it would be interesting to take a look at the catalyst and the pressure range.

So as we expected, unless you want to build a high pressure reactor this will not work. Oxidation goes almost completely towards carbon dioxide.

Well I don't know what exactly temperature needed to condense acetylen to benzene mloecule but if less than 400 C else it worth think about electric spiral heating bacause produkt od plolimeryzation destroyes your glassware. By the way greatings for your Crew. IT nesesery needed when ' free base ' chem idea is constatly realized

@@danieljohnson3024 It is for capturing H2S evolved from sulfides reacting with water ( CaS may form from sulfates during CaC2 production in arc furnace, and copper ions capture phosphine, resulted from Ca3P2 formed from phosphates,, these two gases are the reason why calcium carbide smells awful)

@@danieljohnson3024 Lead cations precipitate with sulfide anions as H2S is in equilibrium with HS and S anions, ratios depending on pH. The basic your solution, more you get sulfide anions. Actually just sodium hydroxide solution would capture most of the H2S but Ksp of PbS is 3×10-28, so he guarantee there is no way any sulfur passes through and creates CxHySz type junk. Many metals would precipitate with H2S but lead does not form explosive acetylides like silver or copper I think thats why he used lead especially.

Nein, wir habe aber unsere Faulheit bezüglich Videos erstellen mit deren OpenChem Projekt überwunden :D Und das Rohr heißt Quarzrohr. Wird verwendet weil es weder schmilz noch einknickt. Gibt es für viel Geld im Laborfachhandel oder für wenig Geld bei ebay (einfach nach "Quarzrohr" suchen und auf den Durchmesser achten)

Ah so :D Du kannst es auch benutzen um Methanol zu oxidieren. Statt Eisen,verwende Kupfer als Katalysator. Ich denke so :D

Because this is synthesis from literal rocks, it doesn't get anymore basic than this. Benzoate is a modern chemical preservative, it's not something you can make from limestone+coal+heat.

The video is good. but the music is annoying. If you really need something to fill spaces of silence, putting a few chemical structures on the screen or going through the reaction in more detail would work. This video reuploaded/uploaded under a slightly different name, but without music, would be 10x better instantly.
