I'm in high school like some other commenters here. My school is filled with snobby rich white kids who have nothing better to do than spend their parents' money getting high and drunk at raves. Usually I'll just get weird looks for my band shirts, but sometimes someone will ask to hear what I'm listening to, see my Spotify open, or hear it unintentionally from headphone noise bleed, and will make a comment like "Wow I didn't know you listened to screamo".

I've never been called a satanist in High School has nor my best friend, we were pretty sociable and were described as "very chill and comical". The only thing that has happened was when i brought my guitar with me to school(along with an amp). I was walking to my Theatre Arts class with my guitar and amp then a cop had stopped me and asked what was in it and i replied "Not a gun", then he said that he didn't believe me so i had opened the case and.....kazam a guitar. That was the only thing that had happened (it was my Senior Year).

I never really had a problem with stereotypes. But the way metalheads are represented on tv here in Greece is not the best. I'm always arguing about metal with a guy who is religious and he just can't accept that I'm a christian and like metal at the same time. Like why can't people be more open minded and stop letting the media brainwashing them?

so far one of the better representations in fictional media i saw was in criminal minds, in one episode a body of a girl appears in the woods mutilated and with candles and stuff. in the town everybody acussed the group of metalheads that used to meet in an abandoned warehouse...well, turned out the metalheads were just a group of friends that met to talk, drink, listen to music and ocassionaly paint a grafiti to pretend they are hardcore, they were framed by the son of the police chief, who was a religious fanatic i think...the thinq is the police chief´s son killed a young girl, left the corpse in the woods, lit up candles and wrote hail satan to make the agents arrest the metalheads...i was glad they didnt go with the easy stereotipical way

I agree with you. I think you should also talk about the public's opinion of us. I know christian metalheads that have been stopped and asked if they know jesus. Some of people's ideas of what metalheads are like is somewhat advantageous. Violent brutal people especially when wearing a cannibal corpse shirt with the battle vest, so people tend to leave you alone. I get some crazy looks when I smile or hold a door for someone or even be sociable and make small talk with someone. Today it happened. An elderly woman dropped some money on the ground and when I picked it up for her people thought I was going to steal it.

There’s this one ad in the Uk and it’s hilarious as a metalhead. It’s a train ad and there’s this woman, when she’s on the train it’s playing some easy listening music, and when she’s driving and stuck in traffic and it’s raining and shit it plays a fake stereotypical metal song. While the guy doing the voiceover says “would you rather classical... or Thrash metal..?” It’s so stereotypical and shut but it’s so easy to poke fun at

@TiagoCostaMusic8 жыл бұрын
Hey, what's up? Cool video, as always. On this one I find particularly interesting and I must agree with you on some stuff but I do have a different opinion on the potrayal of Metal Heads on "fake" media. I'm 29 so I'm past the highschool crap, yeah people were scared of me in highschool. In college nobody cared. I'm a guitar and vocal instructor. I lead a "School of Rock" type of project, and we do have a lot of kids. However, I stumble upon some difficulties when I talk to them about heavy music in general. I must always talk to them about Rock and not Metal, because most of them don't even understand the difference (my older students do understand and many of them are metal heads in metal bands). After inquiring most of the kids about what they thought what a person who liked and played Rock is like, they pretty much described to me a punk rocker. A guy with mohawk, many tattoos, piercings, wearing lots of chains and agressive accessories, with "crazy clothing" and "crazy attitude" (I have no idea where they are getting this from). A little girl of 8 years old justified that it was what she had seen on the Regular Show. This made us need to promote an "open day" to get the parents in and to explain to them that although our speciality of teaching Rock and Metal to their children, didn't imply that we would turn them into murdering devil worshiping drug addicts. We had to explain some stuff, the origins of certain genres and that peoples' personal choices and beliefs sometimes are linked to entire movements and may give all of them a bad rep.
@cezzv8 жыл бұрын
The only thing about fictional media is that it gets a little cringey sometimes, you can just tell they didn't do proper research but it's no big deal. When it comes to real life stuff, you're right, the dumb comments dissappear after high school

At school I personally don't get persecuted for being a metalhead, even though at my school we have to wear uniforms I have mentioned that I'm a fan of metal and on the rare occasions that we get to wear whatever we want I often wear a band shirt. One time a girl actually complimented my Metallica Master Of Puppets shirt and when I sung Army Of The Night by Powerwolf for the talent show people complimented my singing ability, so I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.
@kaelanmcalpine20116 жыл бұрын
I guess that makes two of us who sang a power metal song for a school talent show. I never even been in chorus my entire school career and I'm a high school sophomore as of right now. I sang Nightwish's The Islander by the way, people were, like you, complimenting me on my ability and were surprised by me being up there in the first place. If only my crush was able to go, I she was supposed to be part of it but other plans took priority I guess. A shame too, she has an amazing singing voice, although maybe it's just my love for anyone who can sing soprano, I swear every soprano I've heard is guaranteed to have an angelic voice. Though in 9th grade, and some of 10th, I was persecuted for being a metalhead. It probably doesn't help that I'm either quiet, sarcastic or somewhat cynical but still, other than a few instances, I pretty much showed myself to be a fairly nice guy. Either they disagreed with me on what defines as a nice person or they thought I was posing a facade to manipulate them. To those I say, I don't have the power to manipulate people (I'm a Libra so that tends to come with our nature though) and I'm pretty real and open anyway, and you must have impossible standards for a nice person.

Great video! I never had a bad experience with me being into metal, apart from the typical sexist things that sometimes happen but I don't really mind them. I usually only get a lot of hate when I say I'm a satanist, because I actually live by the "rules" of the Church of Satan (call it stupid, I don't care), and most people think I sacrifice goats and children and that I'm crazy or suicidal and into group sex and all of that. I remember there was a case in Russia a few years ago where some teenagers killed someone "in the name of Satan", and everyone stopped talking to me because they were "afraid of me", although I wouldn't even hurt a freaking bug lol

If I put on some Lamb of God at work and someone overheard it, I get looks like I'm about to strangle them. I'm a christian and a metalhead, and I've got shit from both sides. I've been aproached by religious people trying to convert me, and is always funny when I show them my rosary, their faces xD. I've also attended a christian school my whole life and there were only a couple of metalheads, we were like 5 or so in the whole school. Never was a problem, except once when they asked a girl if she could please not wear a Manson shirt with a 666 blood print. Which, yeah, I kinda get it. But besides that, I've never got any negativity from the christians around me (which I'm gratefull for, PROGRESS YASS). Jesus christ, my aunt is my guide whenever I go to a concert in her city, just so I don't get lost. She waited in line with me at an Iron Maiden concert. And she is a nun. And the metalheads... most are chill, almost all my friends are atheist/agnostics and they don't give a fuck. I live my life and they live theirs. But I've met quite a few ones that are just... assholes. Literally some have tried to put me down once they discovered that I am a christian. Like not just jokes (gezz I can take that, I might even say some myself) but like hurtfull vile comments. One guu discovered that my uncle is a priest and he told me "Oh, so he is a profesional pedophile?". I didn't even respond, my atheist bff back me down on that one. But well, let's break some stereotypes while we can \_/

If you have seen or read a lot about the west memphis three case you will find (believed or not if they are guilty) that a big part of the case against this three boy was based on their appearance it was all about "they have to practice Satanism because that heavy metal music the listen to and look how they dress" all that stuff and it was even worse because all this case happens in a small really religious town and there its when you see this stereotypes are so dangerous because most of the time if there its a murder that involved a "satanic ritual" the firs group of people that police will haunt will be the ones that fix in the "metalhead stereotype" and that's actually really really sad.

Makes me think of Murder by Numbers. Great movie, but I hate how one of the killers was a metalhead.

I don't listen to Eagles Of Death Metal, but their name suggests that they play metal music. In my country, the news referred to an Eagles Of Death Metal concert as a "rock" concert. Which I guess is kind of fine. They probably had no idea what metal is and said "screw it, they have guitars and they play fast, they're rock."

Uhh they are actually kinda weird with their name, from what I have heard of their music, they are most probably Rock
@amateur77728 жыл бұрын
+Gray Udoroth That could be it, but they didn't even mention their name, they just said a "rock concert". Maybe they wanted to censor the word death?

Amateur777 Dunno, maybe they were just too dumb to actually mention the band's name. Can I know what country you're living in ?

when I was in high school the majority of the people I went to school with assumed I was a satanist because i didn't stand for the pledge and I always meditated in first hour. other than that I found it funny when someone tried mocking me. when I watched South Park I would laugh at how much I connected with the goth kids and I loved the episode with them and the emos."THEY'RE NOT THE SAME THING!!!! "

When it comes to fictional media, I don't really care how they visually show metalheads. When going out, I fit the stereotype pretty good and at concerts, I see quite a lot of metalheads with band shirts, long hair, cargo paints etc... So I won't act like there is no "truth in television" if they choose to dress a metalhead character in this way, I'm perfectly fine with it. When it comes to villain roles, I don't really care either, everyone can be a villain, though a bit of originality wouldn't be bad. I think there are others who suffer far worse from stereotypes presented on television than metalheads... When it comes to news media, it would be nice if we were portrayed like regular people with a passion for a specific genre of music, who are part of a subculture, than some sort of freaks but again, I often find it more funny than irritating and in my country (Belgium), when metalheads get in the news, it is more often in a positive light than a negative (like the opening of a meeting place for metalheads or a last year, a corona-proof metal concert in open air).
