My grandma has a statue of a gila monster I was obsessed with as a kid and she's the only person I know who's seen one in the wild. I always heard they would come out in the spring and early mornings and you'd be lucky to see them even once in a lifetime. Super interesting lizards!

Hey I love your video and I know the science I understand its crazy Ive kept reptiles and inverts for 20+ years and my Gila is extreamly social and will get on his hind legs against the habitat when he wants to be picked up. He likes to sleep on my hand or lap. Its funny when he does not want back in his house he will hiss at me without the jerk responce. Like he is arguing. Of all my reptiles he is the most friendly and one of the few that actually wants attention. Yes I never forget what he can do and I am always aware of him and my body location. He was bred from a breeder who has been breeding them for 50 years ( I dont know if that has anything to do with his unusual temperment)

Hey I'm new to gila monsters I'm considering owning one what is your guidelines on cohabiting a male and female does this affect cage size or is it not recommended sorry if I seem vague I'm just really new to this
@ReptileMountainTV6 жыл бұрын
Hi I would add 50% more space for 2 gilas. Basically I'd do a 4ft by 2ft floor space for two animals. I have seen many pairs do well together as well as two females do well. Males will fight. Also just be sure they both have space and ability to utilize resources within the enclosure equally ie. hide, drink, get warm or cool without competition for the resource from the other.
@brakesforsnakes7573 жыл бұрын
One animal per enclosure unless you are breeding.
@Scales136 жыл бұрын
Also quick question you mentioned egg whites as a treat is there any reason that yolk is bad for them being that in the wild they would most likely consume the whole egg? I know you have a good reason not criticizing just curious
@ReptileMountainTV6 жыл бұрын
In the wild they would likely be smaller eggs and fertilized and not like our chicken eggs. Plus the yolk is nearly pure cholesterol whereas the white is protein. I got the info about it from Dr. Seward the leading expert in gila captive care. 😁

@scarface1556 it is on the same level as the western diamond back. The real difference is delivery of venom. Snakes obviously have needle like fangs to inject it directly. Gila monsters have squared rounder teeth so they can't deliver the anywhere near the same ammout of said venom.

@hatusnee5 жыл бұрын
Okay so 2018 yeah there have been studies since then that prove otherwise
@ReptileMountainTV5 жыл бұрын
Please link them then. Capacity for problem solving and learning is not in anyway proof of emotion capacity. Neither of such equates to the physiological components linked to high level emotion. But I’d love links stating they have a limbic lobe, extensive cortical folding. Etc... Has their anatomy changed as of recent?
