If in the Homeric world the man who gets away with an injury is automatically justified in doing so, how does Plato evolve the moral imperative and argue WHY moral evaluations should be universal, applying equally to the strong and the weak. What argument does Plato have to convince the aggressor that he should subscribe to the values of the "just" man? The argument that the gods or immortals are powerful and scrutinize and punish human immorality is not an adequate explanation to induce human morality/adherence to "justice". Nor is the structure of joining together in a group (a polis) an adequate explanation for why it should replace the pyramidal structure found in the Iliad. If these are the arguments Plato rests his case on as to why justice should prevail, then it is a very weak foundation.

I have to disagree, virtue and knowledge are not the same, the virtue in anything is in how we use it. Seneca had fifty marble tables for hosting parties.

I have to back out. I'm not intellectually capable of following. I came here because of the 1990's lectures about Meister Eckhart, Western Civilization and biblical lectures such as Job, Matthew, Luke, Acts of the Apostles and Paul etc. I find I'm unable to develop that passion anymore. This in no way reflects upon Dr Sugrue's contemporary lectures. "It's me, not you" to quote George Castanza in Seinfeld.
